p.1 #1 · Purple Martin attacking Gnat

Purple Martin are one of the faster swallows flying at about 40 MPH compared to the 25 MPH of a Tree Swallow. They maneuver just as quickly making them quite a challenge to photograph in the air, yet they are a very pretty bird and well worth the effort.

I was happy to see a large assortment of Swallows feasting on the Gnats as this kept the Gnats from feasting on me at the Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside, NY

Comments and suggestions welcome,

Morris

Now that is an amazing shot right there, Morris. I'm pretty sure that's the first GIF I've ever seen!

Great shot. I don't know what's harder Morris capturing this image or the martin catching the gnat!

Thank you Karl,

Yes it closed its nictitating membrane for this one frame so about 1/40 of a second. In the next frame the mouth was closed the eyes open and the gnat gone

Thank ROLO,
The martin catches them all day long so it must be easy for it. They are hard to photograph never mind catching a gnat
