p.1 #1 · Reasons to LIKE the Leica SL system?

It‘s not that hard to find critical voices if it come to the SL system from Leica.

However, what about its positive aspects? I would like to focus on the pros and hear what users appreciate about their SL camera system.

Let‘s see if there‘s enough to fill a thread like this one.

The user interface is very good, clean and intuitive, and it’s also the best mirrorless platform for Leica M-mount lenses which is the main reason why I own an SL2. I also like the colours it produces.

What I like about the SL system is that the customer can now purchase used SL series cameras for very good deals around $2K. In Leica terms, this is superb.
Since this thread is focused on the positives, I will leave it by this and just saying that I am not interested in the SL system at all for other multiple reasons

The digital SL system in many ways mimics the older Leica R SLR system in this respect - or I should say disrespect! Great system that is overshadowed by Leica heritage with the M system. Similar to many of the R bodies, the SL's are built like tanks! This rugged build quality combined with the very intuitive menu system and simple minimalist button/ dial layout is what keeps the SL2 around for me. Somehow, this combination of simplicity and build reminds me of using an old Nikon F2. A cliché but I do get certain film vibes when I hold my SL2.

Reasons to LIKE the Leica SL system?

The original Leica SL APO primes (every one of them) are truly exceptional. These lenses are incredibly well-corrected, with a unique modern rendering that sets them apart. I don't see any other system offering this kind of IQ with AF. Personally, I'd skip all zooms and third-party options and just stick with two or three SL APO primes.

Aside from that, it's the best camera for adapting M glass while still getting top notch results without needing to modify the sensor like you would on other systems. The SL sensor stack is not as thin as the Leica M's, but it still handles wide angle lenses surprisingly well and comes very close in performance.

#1 Image Quality. IMO the number one reason to own a high resolution Leica SL2 or SL3 camera is to gain access to the best of Leica's best lenses for photography, specifically the Leica SL APO prime lenses.

#2 Truly, the second best platform on the planet to adapt tiny Leica M lenses.

#3 The much loved Leica user experience carries over to the SL system-- even though a larger mirrorless form factor, Leica knows how to design products that feel good to use.

#4 "High design". The Leica SL system is a good example of a product that starts to cross over to the art zone.

#5 Rugged. Certified IP54 for dust and weather protection.

#6 Access to a very large catalog (I think second only to Emount) of FF and APS-C L-mount lenses both small/compact and larger manufactured by Lmount alliance members and 3rd parties. https://lesdeuxpiedsdehors.com/en/lenses-for-l-mount/

I learned photography with Sony mirrorless and remain an avid Sony Photographer. But not until I picked up my first Leica M rangefinder the M10 and M lenses, and the Leica SL2 camera and SL APO primes did I learn to love a camera system.

So far this is true. This will hopefully soon change with the introduction of the Leica M-V (EVF-M).

Well you wouldn't be adapting Leica M glass on a Leica M camera with an EVF, so technically the SL would still be "the best camera for adapting M glass while still getting top notch results without needing to modify the sensor." But I get your point that whereas it can easily be argued the SL is the best system to shoot Leica M glass with an EVF without modifying the sensor, the claim could no longer be made if Leica makes and M mount camera with an EVF.

Oh, and although I have never shot a Leica SL camera I have considered getting one several times and echoing what others have said what draws me to the system is:

1) Simple yet powerful menu system and operation of the camera
2) Excellent EVFs
3) Excellent and unrivaled AF primes (the APO primes are fantastic, but I also love the look of the 50 summilux)
4) Simple and generally very good adaptation of Leica M mount lenses
5) Excellent build quality and for me size of the cameras

That of course assumes that Leica finds a way to put an EVF within the confines of an M camera's form factor that matches the amazing View Finder experience of the SL cameras. It is truly exceptional. I do have my doubts that it can be duplicated in the much smaller window are of the current M Range Finder Window.

My favorite thing about my guy's SL3 is the Leica R-Adapter L, which works really well with ROM lenses (it's unnecessary for the non-ROMs), especially the zooms.

p.1 #13 · Reasons to LIKE the Leica SL system?

There is much I love about my Sl3 system:

Number 1 of course is image quality. The APO-SL Summicron primes are unmatched in the industry for optical performance in FF cameras. This high optical performance has been tested, documented, and is visible in results. The 28mm/50mm/90mm set provide me a focal length range that covers my intended use cases. The fact that they are all identical in form factor means that a single set of filters and accessories covers all lenses. The goes a good way towards mitigating the size and weight of an SL system. It actually becomes reasonably compact when configured this way. Between all the lenses available from Leica and in the L Mount Alliance you can find lenses that optimize for almost any use case. Zooms, low size, weather resistance, deep image character, or optical perfection, and price. In fact, if you choose the right lenses the SL3 (smaller lighter SL body) provides a Leica AF system whose form factor and performance is very close to a Leica Q with the added benefit of flexible focal length choices.

The build is also unmatched in the industry. This is a durable, designed to last, and survive adverse conditions system. I have no concern using this system in bad weather and a harsh environments. true for both the camera body, and Leica SL lenses.

The system is ergonomically fantastic. Just the right amount of controls, with the right control types and positions to provide full control of needed image making options. The controls have the required configurability to suit just about and situation. The simple and powerful menu system provides all the needed options that are useful because they are so easy to use. The system of profiles is very powerful and can be used rapidly switch between photographic genre requirements. Used creatively profiles have the capability of effectively multiplying the number of physical controls. It is a very well thought out ergonomic and haptic system.

I really like using my M lenses on the SL3. The EVF, and ergonomics provide and exceptional shooting and manual focusing experience. When shooting M on SL the only requirement is the small adapter. I recommend using the Leica version it is worth the price premium. Between the 6 bit encoding and the sensor design working perfectly with the M glass it is a far better system for M than adapting M lenses to other systems. It behaves more like a native system than an adapted one.

Surprisingly there is an opportunity to arbitrage price with the SL system. It doesn't hold value in the resale market like the M system does. I was able to assemble a like new condition pre-owned SL3/APO lens system at prices competitive with other systems new. I have confidence buying leica equipment used. One reason is that there are no issues with grey market. Leica honors its warranty globally. These warranties are also fully transferable to buyers of pre-owned equipment. Leica warranties the equipment, not the purchaser. The 3 year term means that most of the pre-owned equipment I have purchased have warranty as long as new equipment would from other manufactures. I keep this goal in mind when selecting which used equipment I purchase. It has value for me.

I guess we should also recognize the SL systems' shortcomings. First is the AF system and sensor speed. This system is very limited when it comes to fast action. But in the genres where I chose it for it is excellent in both. There are limited choices in accessories, and they tend to be more expensive. Since studio and portraits are one of my prime uses for my SL3 this shows up in lighting. If you want a fully integrated TTL lighting experience you are basically limited to ProFoto gear. The best, but very expensive stuff. Since i shoot manually with lights I am able to use the same Godox equipment I use for my Sony cameras. To shoot manually all you need is a center pin flash or transmitter. So, I am fine with this limitation.

I am very kit size sensitive, which is what originally kept me away from the SL system. But with the smaller lighter size of the SL3 I took another look. Below is a picture of the bags I go out with for my M and SL system. Each lets me carry a the body, three lens kit (all APO for SL3), and the normal extra, battery, filters, cleaning and maintenance supplies. Yes, the SL3 bag is bigger, but not that much and there is actually extra room in the bag for a couple of M lenses too. The bag also holds my two lens Sigma zoom SL kit that gives me coverage from 21mm to 600mm (I usually throw in my 21mm SEM because who need AF at 21mm)in a relatively lightweight compact kit. Amazingly, the zooms use the 67mm filters as the APO primes. So cost effective and efficient.

So, yes for me I find lots to love about Leica SL in my photography. I still have my complete Sony A1 and GM lens kit. But am thinking of selling. I haven't shot the Sony in over a year now. Between M, D-Lux 8, and SL my needs are covered with amazing flexibility, and image quality with my Leicas.

I find it curious that nobody who adapts M lenses (at the longer end, at least) have mentioned IBIS.

To what extent do those of you who use M lenses on an SL find it useful? I could imagine it being of value for a fast 50mm lens in low light, for instance. Not unique to SL, of course.

1. Best joystick.
2. Best small format menu system.
3. Best sensor IQ in small format. Leica even manage to eek out a bit more usable DR over the M11 and A7R5 somehow.
4. Option to supplement SL body with a Panasonic body and share lenses.
5. L mount lens system.
6. EVF optics. They may have 5mp panels but the optics are so good that they compete well against the 9mp evf panels on some cameras.
7. Long exposure photography. you can set up to 30 mins in camera.
8. Spectacular build quality and weather sealing.
9. Access to the Leica Fotos app.
10. The APO SL Summicrons and the 50mm Summilux. Honarable mention to the 24-90 and 90-280.
11. Regular firmware update. I’m looking at you Canon….
12. Excellent IBIS.
13. X factor. The SL3 is the most fun small format camera. Enjoying the shooting experience is vital to me and no one does this better than Leica (an HB) and that’s includes the SL3, for me. If I designed my ideal camera it’d be close to the SL3. It’d have EFCS though.

IMHO the SL is not the best for adapting M lenses. That’s the Nikon Zf. Also the lack of EFCS is daft and stupid on Leicas part as shutter shock is real in longer L mount lenses. I’m not going to criticise the SL3 for its AF or read out as I don’t think it was meant to be a speed camera. It’’s sold as a IQ and interface camera by Leica and that’s what it is. I think the SL3-S is a dead duck though. It has no point. Especially with the availability of the S1ii. The power button is pointless as is the new left dial.

IMHO the SL3 is the best small format travel camera I’ve ever used. I’ve also found the SL system to be incredibly reliable. I’ve had absolutely zero issues that weren’t my fault in 10 years (nearly) of heavy use and abuse.

Ok, I'll mention it... One of the positive aspects of the SL system is IBIS.

Since picking up my M10-M a couple years ago, my M10-P has seen limited use as I prefer B&W most of the time. Having a SL3 allows me to travel with one less camera as it does double duty as my main AF camera, and a secondary M mount camera if I do want to shoot in colour.

Plus all of the stuff mentioned earlier.... Ergos, menus, EVF, etc. Leica FOTOS is the best app I have used to connect to a camera on my phone. There's a couple things I would change, such as the ability to map the left hand scroll wheel to be the Mode Dial, so the rear scroll wheel could switch between shutter speed & exposure compensation, or ISO. And it would be nice to have a fully articulating screen.... And a bit better AF.

This is definitely a plus point for adapting M to SL cameras with longer lenses, like >50mm. While I don't have an SL system camera, I occasionally adapt my M glass to Canon mirrorless and greatly appreciate having IBIS available with a 90mm lens.

IBIS does eventually trail off in usefulness, the longer the focal length, while optical IS gains the advantage.

I could see a hybrid M and SL system where M covers 50mm and wider while SL is used for telephoto work where AF and IBIS/OIS would be beneficial. This is basically what I did for 10 years, but with Canon instead of SL.

For me, as a non-SL owner/user, the primary reason I would jump into the system, if I had a windfall, would be the SL APO Summicron primes. I guess if I wait long enough, I can follow Steve's lead and eventually pick some up on the used market. At the moment I feel like my high reliance on fast AF performance combined with effective face/eye detection/tracking means I will not be leaving my Canon mirrorless system in the near future (same would apply if I instead used Nikon or Sony).

I'd like to thank everyone who has commented here. Those are very interesting insights. Thank you very much!

Although I'm wondering if I should really thank you, because it could become expensive...

Deep down, I actually know I'd enjoy the SL system. Probably more the SL3-S than the SL2-S, simply because it's smaller/handier.

I always tell people who ask me about cameras to go to the store and pick it up. That's more important than all the technical specs. If you enjoy handling it, then you'll enjoy taking pictures. And if you enjoy taking pictures, you'll take good pictures. Or at all.

That includes the operating concept. And a (very) good viewfinder. All of that speaks for the Leica.

In the back of my mind, I have voices telling me: But the Sony is better. True. But it doesn't help if I don't take much pictures with it because it's not as much fun. Even though the results are very good.

Well, we'll see. But those were some great insights into your "SL world," so I can better imagine what it's like to work with the SL.

1. User Interface-The overall user interface is exceptional. I really enjoy how much the camera gets out of the way and lets me make images (for better or worse). Most modern cameras I've used have very busy physical interfaces, with convoluted menus. Using my SL2 reminds me so much of using old film cameras, and somehow (besides the tilt screen) has all of the features I use on every other modern camera, just organized more sensibly to me.
2. Color Neutrality- I came back to adding a full frame camera to my kit after a long time using Olympus m43 cameras. One of the things I like about Olympus is how easy it is to start with a neutral color raw file that didn't have me wasting time removing various color casts. After having a couple models from each, that eliminated Nikon and Fuji GFX because I always found working on their files to be a PITA. I don't have Hassy money, but I was able to swing a like new SL2 at a very good price. And the colors are neutral enough that I get what I want with minimal fuss.
3. Price (on the used market) -The price drop on the used SL models (especially one generation old) makes them a seriously good buy second hand. The feature set on the SL2 checks all the boxes for 85% of my photographic work; The remainder (primarily related to size vs focal length and sometimes weight) is readily handled by my M43 cameras. And even though I could have purchased something else newer with more bells and whistles for the same money, I wouldn't get the fantastic user interface and the feel of substantial quality the SL2 delivers in in abundance.
3. Manual lens compatibility (M and other mounts). Its so seamless to use any of a number of manual lenses with the SL2. this isn't unique to the platform (any mirrorless does it with varying degrees of success) but with my terrible eyesight things like the incredible EVF and focus assists help out immensely.
4. Weather resistance- One of the fantastic features of Olympus/OM-System pro level lenses and bodies is their actual water resistance ratings. Clear, concise, and verifiable ratings that aren't vague and unspecific like every other make. Except Leica. I do enough photography around water and in inclement weather to really appreciate that increased level of water resistance.

Some of those might have been mentioned before:
- user interface, only Hasselblad is equally elegant
- in-camera keystone correction preview (also available on the M, but there are more lens options for the SL)
- plenty of aspect ratios supported including Xpan-like panoramic 3:1
