In early testing, the lens seems weakest around 400mm pretty consistently. Luckily 500-600 is pretty damn good, which is where it will mostly live.
Interesting. PL, Thom, and CameraLabs all found it near its strongest at 400mm.
Yeah, not sure how they pack a refurb, but when I got the 180-600 new (seeing refurb prices now hurts, but it's ok), it was basically in a plastic bag with cardboard padding around everywhere.
I was shocked when I got the 70-200 refurb, and it was just kind of in a bag with styrofoam inserts. But when I tested it, the lens was *bitingly* sharp. Like that lens set a new bar for what sharp means for me.

I'm not sure it's fair to compare it against the 100-400GM for a few reasons, mostly because the 100-400S exists and is better than the Sony in every regard
The Sony has the advantage for me, at the moment, in that I already own it and the 1.4x.

As usual, Nikon's refurb packing is a bit suspect...Lens didn't have enough bubble wrap to keep it from moving inside its box, and the larger box didn't have enough padding to keep the smaller box with lens from moving around. Overall, 5/10 effort by Nikon here.
Nikon should take a lesson from Map Camera. I've bought from them many times and their packaging care impresses every time.
My Z8 arrived yesterday. Looked brand new but packaging was fairly middling also. No scuffs, no scratches may as well be new. Checked the shutter count. Came in at 6.
I dont need more cameras as my two A7RVs are serving my needs, plus I still have a Nikon DLSR and two film bodies, but I have that $1349 Z5II in my cart and hovering over the order button. What a huge homerun for Nikon in the entry level fullframe space that performs better than what most of us were using a few short years ago.

Unless there's a very specific Z lens you can't quite replicate on E, probably chasing good money after bad.

If I did it, I would not buy any more lenses, I would adapt either my e-mount glass or a couple of my favorite F-mount lenses. Z5II is not a need, this would be just for fun. I enjoy adding something different to my system every now and then.
In that case Id rather have the same priced, same camera Zf and use the MF Nikkors with that

I hear you, I have considered doing that for the last year or two, I love the *looks* of the Zf, but I prefer the ergonomics of other Nikons (I have owned Z6/Z7/Z9/Z50).

I'd get the Z5ii if I didn't already know the weird thing the Zf does to you when you get one in hand...the Z5ii is the far more reasonable choice, but the Zf is the toxic relationship that you can't quit
But hey, at least the ISO dial is actually usable now! Used mine for the first time since owning it this week.

My refurb Z6iii arrived this afternoon, well packed but sporting a nearly depleted battery. So no playing until it charges a bit.
Looks like new. Shutter count - 150 mechanical and 780 electronic.
And to make it even better, firmware 2.00 also appears to have arrived for any considering Z6iiis (which are still available for $1699).
For anyone who copped a 180-600, this JJC soft case (XXXXXL) is perfect and just tall enough to accomodate the 1.4x on as well with all additional padding installed.
Which Sony camera does the updated (firmware 2.00) Z6 III most closely approximate-A9 (first version), A7 IV or some combination? Just trying to figure out where this updated version fits in the scheme of things.
