70-200 lens rental order placed. Even is Saturday. We will see how it goes and whether I decide by summers end if purchasing is warranted.

Good luck with the shoot.

Lensrentals also sells their lenses. Sometimes you can keep(buy) the lens you are renting and put the rental fee towards the purchase if you get along well with it. Looking at their for sale listings right now it’s between $1700-1900 by cosmetic condition.

If I get this theater to give the geeen light for all the events. I’ll grab it.

FYI, Lensrentals just posted 20% off rentals and 15% off used lenses for their 19th anniversary. You can probably call them up and ask them to apply the 20% to your rental order. Code HBDLR19

Just finished editing late last night. It went well. There were a few mishaps that were not lens related.

The big one is my flash decided it didn’t want to stay in ttl. I don’t know if I hit something accidentally but I don’t think so. I first couldn’t find ttl again. Then it appeared and it’s only work for 1 shot. Subsequent shots were super blown out. Eventually I shot without flash and that wasn’t great as they had these pink lights all over.

Luckily that wasn’t long and I went into the theater soon after where we don’t use flash.

I alternated between 24-120 and 70-200. Inside the theater.

It was great to be able to shoot from in the stands on FX and DX with the 70-200. I had it on the z8 with the 24-120 on the ZF.

I used it some closer in for the fun of it too. But I will say, if I didn’t want to venture out and find different angles, the 70-200 wouldn’t have been as necessary. It was great to have since it offered me reach at times I wouldn’t have had it. Flexibility.

I’ll share a couple pics later today.

70-200

24-120

Looking at my stats, I didn't use the 70-200 much comparatively.

I'm glad that worked out well! Technically, these are spot on, and I'm feeling the mood in the room. I hope the client gives you the job!

Kind of wild. She’s 71!!! Donna is 76. I’ve read CB has had lots of work but it’s not so offensive like the typical cyborg faced plastic surgery advocate.

Thank you so much everyone!!!

Now to figure out what’s happening with my SB-5000

So much of lens choice for any type of photography is personal preference on how you want to work and what you need to achieve. It seems from your results that you really gelled with the 24-120. When I was shooting weddings and events, I did have a 70-200 at different points, but I was always happier with primes. I've retired from that kind of work but still do photograph my family at sports and events and whatever else comes up. The 70-200 f/2.8S is a damn fine lens and I have no reason or excuse to dislike it...but it didn't bring me joy. I replaced it with a Plena...that brings me joy. When I need longer, I crop. 135mm at f/1.8 with a DX crop is 202.5mm field of view and nearly identical DOF to 200mm f/2.8.

With the work you showed, I think the Tamron 35-150 could be a great fit as well!

You know, other than the few wide shots, the 35-150 would’ve been great. The 35-150 seems to be great for small venue concerts.

Don’t know if I could justify 24-120 and 35-150 together. I’d use the 24-34 range. Not a ton but a few times for wider shots.

I’ve always wanted the plena or the 85 1.2. Of course lol. I want the cool toys.

I’m kind of on the fence about the 70-200. I like it a lot. Shot the kids yesterday in the yard with it. Dog too. But I used it only maybe 20%. What’s hanging me up is money (until maybe summers end) and will I need this if I get more work and if I end up shooting more in the theater.

What would possibly work is this ;

Stay with 24-120 and buy 70-200

Or

24-120 for red carpet and the dinner parties and then 35-150 in the theater with side notes to occasional 24-34mm in theater/venues

Or 24-120 and plena

The Plena is without doubt a special lens.
For me too, it replaces a 70-200 zoom.
The reasons are the same, the Plena is simply a lot more fun and ideally rewards you with an exceptionally beautiful rendering.
But for a job like this, I would also prefer the Z 70-200/2.8 VR S, as it is simply the more flexible and more suitable tool.

I forgot to say, I too prefer primes but for these events as well as in the theater and future small concerts I feel zooms are just easier. I feel I’d have struggled with primes. I am carrying 2 cameras in the theater but still.

But for me personally, which isn’t practical unless I start doing portraits starting today lol, the 1.2 line and the plena make my pants tingle.

Definitely, zooms are unbeatable for events where you really need to get the shots in the box and where conditions often demand focal length flexibility.
The Plena is brilliant for special shots, the rendering can be magical and the results are simply a joy, but it is a specialist that lacks the flexibility of high-quality zoom solutions and I say that as someone who normally squirms miserably when it comes to zooms, having actually only photographed with primes for decades.
However, my last event experience with the Z 24-120/4 S finally convinced me to make my life easier, where flexibility takes precedence over perfectionism and personal preferences/fun factor.

You have no idea how often I run around an event with primes. The key honestly is just having more than one body. If the event is that fast moving then I'll break out the zooms, but it doesn't happen that honestly and it mostly happens when I need either the long or short end of a prime the most. My 135 honestly gets used more than my 70-200 unless I really need 200mm. Granted nobody shoots anything remotely the same and I kind of think a lot of the zoom shooters I run into shoot things in the most boring way imaginable. Trust me I go for fun factor. I shoot a lot of events. I do kind of get tired of shooting all of them the same way. Doesn't mean I risk bombing my shoots, but I do try to keep it interesting sometimes.

Honestly you should probably walk around the event venue before the event really kicks off to help you figure out the spacing a focal length needs for it. I have shot enough things in enough spaces to have a really good idea of it. If you're stagnant it's just a different experience. I walk around a lot.

I’m glad you jumped in especially with your points and experience.

So far I’m only doing the events in the same place. The outdoor walkway to the theater where the step and repeat is, the indoor foyer when it was crappy outside, and the neighboring restaurant. Only times I needed 24 so far were when It rained and it was inside the foyer.

2 of the 3 events I walked around those areas and mixed in step and repeat. The last one I was stagnant as the event was higher profile and they wanted the step and repeat mostly.

I prefer, like yourself to move. I like angles and moments and because of that, primes.

In the theater, I could get away with 135 (maybe 150 ) and under unless I shoot from way up and back for different looks.

In the theater I carried 2 cameras. 24-120 on the zf and 70-200 on the z8.

Red carpet I imagine I could use 2 primes. Maybe like 35 and 85 unless things got cramped in the foyer.

Honestly step and repeat work is better with the zooms. You never know where they will stand or how big the group is and you don't always have the time to move back and forth. Anything podium like I just use the 135 unless it's too far. You do enough you can feel things out in a way.
