My "chlidren" loved ice on those hot days! Ice cubes I did not like because the edges of the cubes were sharp...so I crushed it into chunks for them! Plus they were all cocker spaniels and their mouths were not "jaw breakers" like your kids or the larger breeds. They loved it!!!
