OK, it's time for an image thread for this lens so I'll get it started.

Nice! Longwood is a great place to shoot.

I said I wouldn't get it, but this lens is officially on my wishlist. It's practical for my usage despite its high price. It'll replace the 135 GM for me, but I'll have to wait to see if it can also replace my 85 GM II. I like the compactness of the 85 GM II.

Please keep the images coming!

I personally love primes and mostly shoot with them, however, there are times where it's limiting. I'm fortunate to live near Longwood Gardens in PA and I love shooting plants there with a fast lens to isolate them from the background but I don't like schlepping around several fast primes. This lens was perfect for that type of outing.

One thing I really noticed was a lack of color fringing from CA. It's sharp and well-corrected. The size is very manageable as well.

I convinced myself that I didn’t need this lens with all my fast primes in this range plus my GM 70-200mm f2.8 II. These images, plus other image posts, have lead to a weakened resolve… so I just broke down ordered it. Thanks a lot, guys.

Its giving me 135L vibes... loved the results but hated shooting with a prime this long because it was often too long.

The 50-150 fixes this issue but the price is so high its hard to justify dammit

Yup... the price is crazy high, but sold my 70-200 GMII and Sigma 105 F1.4. That got me most of the way there.

Not as painful as buying it outright.

p.1 #9 · Sony 50-150mm f/2 GM Image Thread

Just emerged from a couple months away from the photo news and this site. Jaw basically dropped when I saw this lens mentioned. This is so far the only one of the extra bright zoom lenses that actually makes sense to me. Pretty much everything I'd want an f2 zoom for I'd also want to be in the normal - telephoto range, for adequate subject separation. This will probably replace the 70-200 gm ii for me, and the Tamron 35-150, and the Samyang 135 1.8, and we'll see, maybe the Sigma 105 1.4 as well. It has a maximum pupil opening of 75, like a 200/2.8, 135/1.8, and 105/1.4, so it can achieve equivalent subject separation, with lots of zooming options to spare. If subject separation is desired for wider lenses, it's better served by a prime like a 35/1.2 or a 24/1.4 etc.
Ooof, it's expensive though… and the lack of TC compatibility and OSS limits its use somewhat compared with the 70-200 2.8 ii which is an incredibly versatile lens. Hmmmmmmmm…

After testing the GM 50-150/2 yesterday I realized it is not for me.While very well built and having very good/excellent optics it is too (front)heavy, too bulky and has too small RR at each focal lenght for my needs.Fast, small primes/zooms will serve me better.

Forgive my ignorance. What does RR stand for?

Ah…understood!

Even though this lens doesn’t really fit my needs, I still find it intriguing

Thanks for sharing your impressions. Sorry it didn’t work for you

Does this lens offer more depth of field and better Bokeh than a Simga 105 1.4?
The images are definitely amazing!

The blur at 150/2 is the same, but 1.4 will provide thinner DoF.

Yes to more DOF in corresponding focal length at approximately 105mm but better bokeh? I don't think so. However, if you zoom the lens close to the long end of the lens, the bokeh will become smoother.

I just got this lens. I had sold the 85 & 135 GM a while back and wanted something in the 50 range as well so I thought this might be worth trying. Here are some quick shots RAW processed in DXO PR (no profile yet). My main interest in this guy will be for shooting grandsons' sports and cars.
