$849

18MP 1" Vertical 3:4 CMOS Sensor
FUJINON 10.8mm f/2.8 Lens (32mm Equiv.)
Rear Vertical LCD & Sub LCD Screens
Optical Window Viewfinder
Film Camera Mode & 2-in-1 Mode
13 Film Simulation Modes and 26 Filters
Frame Advance Lever & Exposure Comp Dial
1080 x 1440 Vertical Video Recording
X half App for Image Development

Hot on the heels of releasing their genre-bending compact medium format camera, the GFX100RF, FUJIFILM swings to the other end of the imaging spectrum with their latest innovation, the petite X half Digital Camera. Riffing on the film world’s half-frame concept to meld the ease of digital shooting with the pleasure, presence, and texture of shooting film, the camera features a new 1”, vertically-oriented 18MP sensor and a fixed FUJINON Aspherical 10.8mm f/2.8 lens produce 3:4 stills and video. A host of film-reminiscent features—like a Frame Advance Lever, Film Camera mode, 2-in-1 mode, FUJIFILM’s celebrated film simulations, and integration with INSTAX printers—recreates the analog experience with a 21st century edge.

The 1”, 18MP vertically-oriented sensor mimics the half-frame cameras of yesteryear, which exposed half the film frame to double the total picture count of a roll of film. In addition to invoking a nostalgic, fun-friendly shooting style, the new sensor affords the camera’s pocketable build. Included is a simple, no-frills optical viewfinder, a vertical rear LCD touchscreen, a slim, pill-shaped LCD displaying the chose Film Simulation, and the Frame Advance Lever which gives the feel of winding film on a film camera, all with the same design philosophy that’s distinguished FUJIFILM’s X-series cameras.

The fixed FUJINON Aspherical 10.8mm f/2.8 lens offers a 32mm equivalent focal length whose wide field of view suits most everyday subjects and can work in both manual and auto modes.

Unique to the X half is the new Film Camera mode, FUJIFILM’s gambit to integrate the immersive experience of shooting film into the modern digital workflow. Choose the film simulation, the length of the “roll,” and the desired exposure setting–and the camera locks into that configuration (with a few built-in escape hatches) until the “roll” is complete and it’s time to “develop” the images with the new X half app or via computer. Pulling the Frame Advance Lever “advances” the roll and sets up the next shot. Image composition is only available through the viewfinder, and the vertical rear LCD only displays battery, date, and remaining frames information.

The 2-in-1 mode is also new and exclusive to the X half, again building on the half-frame concept to produce a digital-era tableau. The mode allows the automatic combination of two sequential still images, videos, or a still and a video in the 3:4 aspect ratio to create a diptych in a single, shareable file.

The X half incorporates 13 of FUJIFILM’s distinct Film Simulations, including the ultra-vibrant Velvia, the nostalgic Classic Chrome, and the artistic black-and-white Acros. A grain setting allows for the inclusion and adjustment of the apparent graininess of each film type. Additionally, there are 26 filters inspired by the distinct traits of film, including Light Leak, Halation, Expired Film, and Double Exposure.

While primarily a stills-oriented camera, the X half does shoot vertical video at 1080 x 1440 at 24 fps with dedicated slow-motion settings up to 200%.

Built for sharing, the X half wirelessly connects to an optional INSTAX printer to immediately print and share images. The dedicated X half app also makes it easy to digitally share photos or videos and can also be used to develop images made in the Film Camera mode.

Probably not. Some of the new features are novel and interesting, the film advance lever, the “roll of film” emulation mode, even the 2 in one picture display. But what happens when the novelty wears off? I’m left with a $849 hole in my wallet. Yeah, I think I’ll pass on this one.

Man, Fuji would just do anything to not do a full frame Leica like camera.
I’m not interested in that X-Half but I get the appeal and there are a lot of features I do really like design wise.
If it was full frame and interchangeable lenses, I would be so into it, even if it’s jpeg only, no video or autofocus and old sensor or other quirks.
There are things here I wouldn’t mind to see in my Zf.

Completely agree, other than the jpeg only. RAW is a must.

I get the logic behind Fujifilm not wanting to compete in the FF segment, but... if you ignore looking at the rest of it and look at Leica specifically... is there really no chance for a profitable niche product like the camera we both seem to visualise, to compete (ish) with Leica at a completely different price point? Not sure, but I would be first in line for one or two of them.

Gateway camera for i-Phone users.
No raw, etc.

Not that I'll get one soon, but ... hmmm, I could see handing this off to non-photographer family / friend, so they can shoot the form factor (instead of i-Phone, etc.). Bike jacket, maybe. Could almost use it as a key ring.

For some, it could be the world's best camera ... i.e. the one you have with you.

Quirky, and might not get much love from the advanced crowd. But, I don't think the advanced crowd is the primary, target market. It's probably silly to compare this to ... ummm, anything. It is what it is ... a pseudo retro, gateway, quirk.

It may be an artifact of being on a photography forum, but there appears to be a lot of interest in a high quality full-frame rangefinder-type ILC camera body that is not exploitatively priced. Sales and demand for the Fuji X100Vi are one reality-based indication of this interest.

Hard to understand why no company, especially Fuji or Sony, has pursued this possibility.

Please correct me if I am wrong since I have not followed this release very closely. If the lens is 10.8mm and gives a 32mm full frame equivalent field of view, does that mean its f/2.8 aperture gives a depth of field equivalent to around f8 on full frame when shooting wide open?

Basically it would be like shooting with a 32mm f8 lens (in full frame equiv.) in portrait orientation.

Seems like a miss for $850. If this was $500 or less I could maybe think about it.

I believe that's correct Fred.

I try not to watch Hugh as he falls into the trap of telling, not showing 99% of the time, but the "it elevates you to be an art director or film director" just so wholly encapsulates the absurdity of these products and the people who are paid for their early access to them.

Yes. Found some facts.

"It has a 10.8mm F2.8 prime lens, and that sensor's 2.94x crop factor means this gives a 32mm equivalent field of view and an F8.2-equiv maximum aperture."

A $20 adapter puts my Leica lenses on my Sony A7CII and it works great. For the times I don't want to shoot film in my M6's.

But a native Leica M mount Xpro style full frame body even at $4K would probably be as hard to buy as an X100VI. Fuji's leaving a lot of money untapped.

It will be pretty similar to what we are used to with smartphones, at least in terms of the final image. The camera, lens, and sensor combo won't give much subject separation through background blur. But that could actually make it a great tool for capturing images where everything is in focus, like in street, architecture, or landscape photography.

I like the concept in general and I think Fuji should get credit for trying something different.

That said there a couple design choices that bother me:
- LED flash instead of xenon
- no RAW and not even a 10bit HEIF option (which ideally should have a gain map as well)
- wind lever only usable in special modes
- no framelines in optical viewfinder

Unfortunately a few too many limitations to justify the cost of this camera for me..

I was going to add to my comment that I would much prefer to just use my iPhone instead of this half frame. At least I can shoot RAW and have the ability to blur the background in portrait mode 😀

Yup, that works for me. I'm also seeing all the "I could just use my smartphone" comments, and thinking... Yes, but.. do you want to? For me, that shooting experience is just terrible.

Anyway, what appeal the most to me about this, is actually the things I think it could teach me about photography. Or maybe more like... sharpen my eye. It's essentially photography without the usual crutches; forget shallow DOF. Cropping power, very little. Super fine IQ, nah. Heavy PP? Limited options with jpeg.

I'm fairly sure this camera would have me approaching photography differently, and for sure having to work more for it. It does need to come down in price though. ~990 here, oof.

Been watching a few video reviews... there are some really interesting things going on here, and a few gimmicky things. I thought we were "done" with light leak filters and date stamps, but I guess not.

At $499, it could have been a great gift for a kid who wants to get into photography, or for an adult who has an artistic eye and wants to try something new. At $1000 (including tax), I don't know.

But if you've had your eye on an X100VI, but can't sit on a waiting list for a year or more ... why not try this?
