p.1 #1 · Any Issues With Firmware 1.0.3 on a R5MkII?
I've had a new R5MkII now for several days. The moment I had the battery charged updated the firmware (gee what faith I suppose). I got some amazing results shooting birds my first outing and the focus impressed me mightily. Even in dim light in my home it grabbed my wife's eye. Now today for some reason, in People eye detection mode for some reason it's lost a lot of sensitivity. I have to be right up on a photo of a person to have it grab the eye where initially a few days ago it would do it from across the room. It seems to be ok with animals however for the most part. Perhaps a little less sensitive. What gives? Am I another of the folks mentioning on the internet that this has become a firmware glitch? Obviously, Canon does NOT allow one to revert back to 1.0.2 to discover if that is the case with the new firmware. I guess we're all beta testers now. If Canon becomes aware of an issue I've got a sinking feeling it's going to be quite some time before they fix it.

dcisive,
I noticed some problems the last few outings on stills. Zero issues on video. I typically shoot both, mostly birds and wildlife. I go out 1 or 2 times a week or so. I updated to firmware 1.0.3 a week or so after it was released. It is confusing to me, as it seems to happen, and then not happen. I mostly use the RF200-800. I use entire screen, animal subject and eye detect on or off depending on distance(mostly on).
I did do a senior portrait type photo shoot with a granddaughter 2 weeks ago with the EF24-105, and took just over 100 images, and all autofocus was perfect. Entire screen, people as subject and eye detect was used.
I don't remember having this issue with earlier firmware. Had the R5 MKII since it came out.
Look foreward to hearing if others are experencing this.

Turns out to be much ado about nothing. I did a reset and dialed in my buttons differently this time. I was basing my focus issue entirely on how it focused on some small old black and white photos that with a Sony A6700 it provided focus boxes on the eye's in the pictures, but the R5MkII did not until I got rather close (like 6ft). Turns out that on a REAL person or even a color photograph the R5MkII nails the eye with a instant box to track no issues. With birds it blows away the speed and accuracy of focus from the Sony. So in the end I guess I have NO problems with 1.0.3

Since upgrading imo I think the AF feels slower and has issues acquiring the subjects, especially animals that are not clearly in view. I don't remember with 1.02 where a single tiny branch or foliage becomes the priority over a bird or squirrel right behind it. First time I've seen a few corrupted images on the CF express card also after at least 50k shots with prior firmware. Definitely not happy with this firmware so far. I'm not sure the process for reverting but I'd go back in a second if I could easily.

I am having this same issue with mine. Its Osprey season here and if it's slightly defocused behind the subject, the camera will not find it unless its the only thing in frame against a solid color like the sky. Its maddening. My z9 is hands down better than the R5II currently. I keep giving the R5 a shot because I want the framerate but the Z9 never gives me issues. It works near flawlessly on dark birds like Ospreys and Eagles.

I just came from shooting some HS softball, from the dugout and centerfield AF would put a square around the face but would focus on the netting instead of person. Consistent with any AF mode (single pt, 9 pt, flex), didn't matter what mode subject detect was selected. Acquiring focus on a subject it was almost as it just pauses slightly and then locks on, annoying. I'm shooting with EF lens still but didn't see this before w/1.02. Right after I upgraded I remember shooting some baseball at high iso and pre-capture would stutter like crazy at 30fps, I thought that might have been the CFe card but same results with lexar and prograde. I need to send a few pics off to Canon and ask for an explanation.

I have a friend who is using a R5MkII and 100-500L for sport team shooting. He's got a 100% hit rate and the results right out of camera are unreal perfection. Perhaps if your settings were in line with his you might have better luck. We're both using 1.0.3 and it's perfection for us thus far. My birding has been other level so far. I'm getting shot consistency I never reached with Sony and Nikon prior. I'm still not so sure there are issues with 1.0.3

A friend I shoot with has noticed the AF is not as accurate with 1.0.3 on diving kingfishers as it was with the previous firmware. I am still on 1.0.2 and we are going for Eagles tomorrow at Conowingo so we'll see how we do.

I wished it were settings but I've had this body on day 1 when introduced and shot dozens of sporting events so the only thing that has really changed was the firmware of recent. Just strange things I've noticed w/v1.03, prior to that it was spot on. What I saw yesterday where it refused to focus on the face.

I don't see any problems at all.
I shoot birds 2 to 4 days a week, mostly waders like the Kentish plover, common sandpiper, ruffs, and spotted redshanks, usually at water level.
I'm also very happy with the results at high ISO.
The camera keeps tracking even in backlight and challenging conditions, delivering truly impressive results.

It's definitely not settings for me either. The AF is more fool proof on the R5ii than any camera before it. I have no issues with any of my other cameras and I know what I'm doing. Mine will work perfectly 70% of the time. Then there will be times I'll have the subject in the viewfinder and the camera will actually recognize and know it's a subject and track it across the frame. The focus box will adjust and change size as the subject moves, and it will not pull into focus unless I manually override and focus myself. My camera also used to lock up all the time, but the firmware did its job and fixed that. it's not locked up once since I updated. Now it won't AF
Off topic, but took my R1 out last night, and that camera is just a banger. Its easily the best AF-ing camera I've ever used. it just continues to impress me.

For those who are experiencing AF problems with the R5ii 1.0.3 - is it with all lenses or a specific lens (or two)? And is it at all focal length ranges or just certain ones?
p.1 #14 · Any Issues With Firmware 1.0.3 on a R5MkII?
I can say with the 100-500L and 24-105 f4L I'm using this camera continues to impress. Never misses a shot fast moving birds or people. I just giggle when a darting bird scoots overhead and I'm barely in my focus box (I use C1 custom sized a bit) and it smacks a nice blue box right on their eye and sticks there like glue.

I've only seen it with the 100-300L and my 400/600 primes with birds in flight, and tracking running dogs. It's a new development. I didn't have any other issues with the camera prior to the update, other than it locked up 3-5 times an hour.

I don't have those lenses so I can't test it out for you, sadly. I do have a RF 100-500L and 70-200L (non-Z). When on 1.0.2 I felt like the 100-500L at the 500mm wasn't as sharp as it could have been even though the AF says it locked on to the BIF. But I admit I may have also had too slow of a shutter speed. I'll try and test it out this weekend as I haven't had a chance to do BIF photos since upgrading to 1.0.3. For static (or slow/normal moving) subjects the AF has been good, but I haven't had a chance to do any fast moving subjects in the last few weeks.
p.1 #18 · Any Issues With Firmware 1.0.3 on a R5MkII?
Oof, that is tough to read. Due to an uptick in work, I haven't been shooting much since 1.0.3 (ironically the author sings praises for 1.0.2--which I had some hit-and-miss at 500mm, and 1.0.0 which for me was totally buggy outside of AF). I don't have any wildlife/birding scheduled in the upcoming couple of weeks, but I'll take the R5ii out when I can and take some shots of subjects in motion.
I did use it extensively to film my friend's child running around a playground (video) and then took a few stills of child and parents. In that particular use case the R5ii performed as expected.

Quoted from that article. This is the exact same problem I'm having
"Autofocus Problems
Autofocus became unreliable. Sometimes, the camera would recognize the subject but refuse to pull focus. It would just hang there, frozen. Other times, it would lock onto the background, the foreground, or somewhere in between—anywhere but the subject even with single point AF selected."

I’ve been having these AF issues since this update too. I haven’t changed any of my settings since I first set it up at launch. So my question is, if I want to roll back to 1.0.2 is the procedure the same as with the R5? - either the one or two card methods that a Google search shows.
I’ve never felt I needed to do a roll back before but my AF has become stubborn and or slow to react. Previously it was like a magnet on birds. It’s baby and migration season I can’t wait for Canon to maybe fix this when they have a moment.
