p.1 #1 · One way to unlock the fps, TC restriction of Sigma 300-600mm FE

Using that lens with your Nikon Z bodies with megadap ETZ21 Pro.

?feature=share

Don't ask how or why. It just works. By the way, the adapter didn't see the TC; hence, the EXIF on F stop still shows no TC. Similar to when we stack Sony 1.4x and 2x via extension tube, the EXIF only sees one TC.

Shame on Sony. This is secretly a Z mount lens lol.

It is possible to take out , without damaging it, the board inside the sony tc14 and connect directly with a small flat cable extension connector the two cables from the pins. You will have a dumb tc14 that the camera will not see, like an extension tube. Wrong data registered and still 15fps cap but the dumb tc14 could be used on any lens that have the right space inside.

The takeaway here is that Sony restricting this lens will help Nikon sales.

Asking how or why not necessary. Nikon does not stop it.

Future firmware may stop it though, whether intentional or not.
This happened years ago with Sigma and Canon.

I had Sigma 150-600 S and later Sigma 500 f4 S.
Both always worked with Canon TC, but depending on lens firmware, either TCII or TCIII would work,
but not both.
This affected many around the time 150-600 C was released as new firmware was released soon after lens release and that changed which TC would work.

So caution advised if you are planning to spend. Check if firmware can be rolled back on adapter, camera and lens before updating any, assuming it does work at first.

Sony body updates had similar, but less severe results with adapted Canon lenses.
They would still work, still AF, but the AF performance could improve or degrade.

With the older Canon / Sigma issue, could not even take a shot.

Thank for sharing this Alex. Hope you don't mind but I have passed youtube link to a sony rep and asked to pass on the feedback about TC support and them deliberately limiting things in the body.

(of course not expecting anything will change immediately but hoping in longer term we see an improvement in this area)

And one more review with this lens on Z9

It's crap like this is why I stopped supporting Sony. Their crap hotshoe design was also part of it.

I sold my A1 because of it... but sony still have the lenses I want/need and other brands don't
otherwise would have moved long back. I tried using multiple systems in parallel with panasonic, Fuji etc (with hope that i could replace sony one day) but nothing quite matches my sony setup.

I understand people’s frustration. On the other hand, Sony was wise enough to make the E mount open. Which is why Sony users enjoy the wide selection of lenses and brands we do.

So while it would be great if Sony could remove the restrictions, I also understand them wanting to protect their own lens sales. Especially when companies like Sigma can make lenses like this for half the price of Sony big whites

Just my $.02

The functional incompatibility with Sigma E-mount lenses on Sony FE teleconverters is during the process where the modified lens information should be sent to the camera body. Obviously avoiding that process avoids it. You get nothing as nothing was asked.

Rebooting Sony cameras with a Sony teleconverter + Sigma lens mounted acts somewhat similar. The Sigma lens firmware should be responding initially with the corrected information for use with the teleconverter, but it doesn't. It only sends the bare lens information. The bare lens info is retained and the Sony camera happily uses that after the reboot. The camera doesn't attempt to repoll the lens and get stuck waiting for the teleconverter added info.

Nothing in the Sony camera needs to change to get this process working correctly. The missing stuff just needs to get added into the Sigma lens and it needs to know when and how to give it.

It is amazing it is working. I'm wondering it this combination would work with Sigma 500mm F5.6...

AF still doesn't work this way, does it?

Sony is sharing as much of their mount's protocol as they wish, so that their native lenses look better when compared against the 3rd party offerings. It's shady and stupid.

The AF motors work in MF after power cycling the camera.

The bare lens data might cause an issue for AF. Fully working mirrorless AF is pretty complex.

I am curious how complete the adaptation is from E to Z considering how limited some native E-mount lenses are like the original Sigma F2.8 DN primes are with Fast Hybrid AF (or the various native emulating EF adapters.) Somehow Samyang, Viltrox, TTArtisan, Mieke, and Yongnuo have gotten AF working fairly well even if other stuff like Lens Compensation data is missing or incorrect.

Sigma seems to be the only third-party making lenses physically compatible with the FE teleconverters. I'd be curious how other lenses act when hooked up. I haven't progressed enough in lens modifications to get any other set together yet.

Great test Alex. I'm not following the general conclusion though. How does this prove Sony is intentionally handicapping third-party lenses for fps, as it doesn't provide any insight into what Sony's bodies and firmware requires of lenses as part of their operation on a native E-Mount.

Are you suggesting Sony is unintentionally handicapping third-party lenses for fps?

No. I'm wondering if the lenses are unable to deliver something that Sony's cameras rely upon for its high-speed AF/burst shooting.
