While hiking around Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park last week, several mule deer came right up on us on the trail. This fawn was close enough for me to get some good images even though I didn't have a "wildlife" lens. It was so fun to be up close to these beautiful animals.

As I was cleaning my files, came across several months in 2013/2014 involving the unsuccessful (IMO) Sony attempt to bring P&S type mirrorless photography to the masses. This was the LCD only 16MP APS-C NEX-F3. Got it at sale with kit lens E18-55 and E55-210. This was my entry into the mirrorless world as I tried it to play (and have fun) with my increasing collection then of cheap legacy lenses. It stayed with me for several months until I upgraded to the A6000.
While it may have been ok for some street photography, some landscape, bit of portraiture and other P&S subjects which I didn't pursue; I am afraid that in the distant future, its digital footprints in nature/wildlife, BIF and macro potentials will remain hidden.
I recently processed sample images that could possibly add to its digital footprints for future reference. All images in JPG (shooting 90% JPG back then).
For wildlife/nature, as long as not moving, images using the E55-210 (sometimes attached with afocal TC in front, a popular setup during my superzoom days) were pretty usable/presentable.
BIFs were also attainable for small/medium/large subjects with slow or predictable flights. Hard to track using LCD that I bought the EVF (more than 50% of the whole NEX-F3 kit set) for improved experience. Hit rate was low but a hit was a hit :-).
Close ups and macros were also looked at and I had some interesting results but I explored more into enlarger and reversed lens setup back then. Single frame, no stacking.

100-400 looks great, 300 looks a bit soft? 300 shots further away?

I had the 1.4x on my 300 this morning because I planned on being in a tight wooded location. I was at the spot yesterday with the 2x and would have better to shoot with f4 vs f5.6. But my morning plans changed so I had to go to a different location, a much more open wetland environment. I found 420mm lacking, I don't find cropping more vs using 2x any better, IMO using the 2x comes out on top vs crop since I always have to crop anyway, but then again it could be because I'm crap and not crop.
I stayed prone along the embankment for a good 45 min waiting for the birds to come in close, they never did and I got bit by ants for it.
