I haven't been feeling too inspired lately, which is pretty normal for me this time of year, so I haven't had the motivation to do any photo sessions just for the sake of creating something, but a recent streak of 60 plus degree days gave me the motivation I needed to get out and make some portraits with one of my best friends Caleb. He is always willing to model for me when I'm feeling inspired, and is undeniably a compelling portrait subject. I felt that this particular shot had a very cinematic quality to it and deserved an edit that paid homage to classic filmmaking.
Canon 5D MKIII, Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II lens, lit using natural light and a silver reflector. f/1.6, 1/100th sec, ISO 250.
Well done Daniel! Some soft focus here and portraits are great for that. The contrast here is NOT lost with your soft focus here. Many times it can get lost with soft focus. His left side face it sharp. That "dreamy effect".....
Well done!

Thanks man! Hopefully there are many more to come. We have a really cool concept in the works now, involving fire. Hoping to make that shoot happen in late March or early April.

Not Feeling inspired but have motivated me!!! Phenomenal shot as usual. The shallow plane of focus on just half of his face along with the strong contrast from what I'm guessing is natural light really makes him pop. The photo is almost statuesque to me. Looking like a bronze era body builder or a Roman/Greek statue. The light piercing to the eye that is just in focus with the hard contrast on his facial features. I'm going to try replicate this one just for practice sake. Great work and thank you for sharing it with us!

Thank you so much! Please feel free to share your results here, I would love to see! I'm happy that I helped motivate you to create something like this.
It was indeed lit using natural light, and I was also using the silver side of a 5-in-1 disc reflector.
Awesome photo! Love the tones and the edit, makes me miss my 85L. I'm inspired to do a similar self portrait.. though I most certainly won't look as good as

Thank you. Honored that you are inspired by one of my portraits.
