Yeah, very interesting. Good combination of size, capability & price for those looking for a smaller high-res body without significant compromises, but don't need the outright speed (and stacked sensor compromises) of the Z8 or R5II. The possibility of converting LR Presets to LUT's and baking them in to JPEG's also brings some interesting workflow wins.

I'm currently in the market for a new system, and Panasonic/L-Mount keeps coming up at the top of my selection list. This just adds to that. S1RII/S5II/S9 covers all my needs, from EDC/Webcam body to serious landscape camera. And the lens lineup in L is so very extensive.

With the latest Sigma 500mm f5.6 and 300-600mm f4 lenses, they have a much more compelling lens lineup than Canon. The only question mark is the AF performance, but if the new camera retains Panasonic's unique near-AF/far AF settings, it will be better than the competition in some aspects.

It is pretty intriguing. I looked at the S5ii when it was first released and liked it but wasn't looking to make a switch then. How is L mount stacked for quality smaller-ish lenses. I'm not looking for this to be an A7c like system, but I tend to shy away from super big lenses as an everyday carry. I like one body/system to do it all (ski, hike, mtb, walk around a city).

You have all the nice little Sigma I-series primes, plus the reasonably-sized Panasonic f1.8 primes to choose from...

I'm relatively light on my AF requirements, my main subject that moves are airplanes, which tend to be VERY predictable in motion. So anything better than Expeed6 Nikons is good enough for me.

I'm hoping for R6II level AF, but so long as it's better than my Z7 I'm good.

Plus some other small 3rd party chinese primes.

Worth noting that all the Panasonic f1.8 primes (plus their 100/2.8 Macro) are identical in physical size and layout (with minimum weight differences), which is a huge win for hybrid shooters using gimbals or other rigs, or those who just want a consistent filter thread in their kit.

The 14-28 and 20-60 are also known for being rather good despite being kit lenses.

Sigma is also releasing them in that sexy silver finish to match the BF. But they would look nice on a black body as well.

it will be interesting how the pro capture and 40 fps e-shutter performance is viewed by advanced users with the 300-600 and 500 Sigma lenses; along with the related 12bit performance versus 14bit quality option discussions that will come along with the e-shutter experience too.

i remain a first-curtain shooter, and I think Lumix has done well with this avoiding the rolling shutter as long as you use first-party lenses, and while things like 40fps are interesting product highlights, I remain most interested in final image quality performance and the original S1R is going to be hard to surpass for pure photography using either the mechanical or electronic shutter.

It's a bunch faster than the A7RV, looks like the best non-stacked rolling shutter performance for a 40+MP sensor, equivalent to the R5 in stills and better in some video modes.

The other S1RII thread was saying that readout speed is 1/26s in 14 bit, same as SL2 & S1R:
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1892189/0#16758226

R5 is 1/61s:

my takeaway is that the major change is around the battery, and that the grip is necessary to achieve some camera functions. as someone already in the ecosystem with sixteen oem blj31 batteries, this is disappointing, especially given that Panasonic is a global leader in battery technology and is marketing itself as being environmentally responsible - and ending the life of a battery series after the first generation is pretty lame. it looks that even third-party dummy batteries and usb-c power are limited, and that the only option to unlock all the camera features is the oem grip and/or the oem dummy-battery with its usb-c connector.
on the other hand, the blj31 is notorious for parasitic drain, and in five years two of my oem batteries died and all four third party batteries have died, so maybe they had a critical flaw that needed to be avoided, but going to a smaller under-powered battery (for full functions) and discontinuing a larger capacity battery seems inefficient for such a new platform and totally unexpected on the performance front for a flagship.

The flip side is they are now using their most common battery form factor in this body (used by the S9, G9 II, GH5 II, GH6, GH7, DC-S5, S5 II, S5 IIX, DMW-BG1, DMW-BGS5 and compatible with the G9, GH5 and GH5s but do not charge on the BLF19's charger. the GH3 and GH4 may also work with the BLK22 battery with the same charge restrictions but are not officially compatible according to Panasonic).

R5 is 1/61s in 12bit, not in 14bit. The R5 is only capable of 14bit in single-shot mode (mech shutter @ 12fps is 13bit, e-shutter is 12bit)

The 40fps e-shutter mode on the S1RII is obviously not in 14 bit (since you can't do 40fps from 1/26s)

Spec sheets for the suspected sensor referenced in your first link indicate that the sensor supports 1/61 in 12bit for the 35MP movie mode (which is full-width), The 40fps stills mode on the S1RII is likely a variant of that 12-bit readout mode with the same readout speed, just over all lines of the sensor.

i get it. i have the g9, gh4, gh5, gh5s, gh6 and have all kinds of battery adapters d-tap, v-mount, and so-on, but none of my core camera options are limited by not having an oem grip/adapter.

I really was hoping for a stacked sensor. Oh well….

Now really not sure what to do about the Sigma 300-600. Either the L mount version on the Panasonic S1Rii with mechanical shutter (EFCS) or on my A1ii but without TC compatibility.

Fuck! I hate decisions like this…

Gordon

p.s. I did order one though. I have the Sigma 500 and 60-600 that I can test to see how I like it. Mostly 8-10fps is fine for me, even for wildlife. It has RAW pre capture which is much more useful.

After all the headaches and pain-points in having to jump through various power-requirement hoops just to successfully record all frame-rates externally on my GH6 I came to the conclusion that, well, uh, I was the problem...I had allowed myself to accept that having all of this requisite extraneous cables and megadongles and added weight and setup time was worth the trouble and expense and gawd-awful inconvenience out in the field. Silly, silly me.

Solution To Missing Frame Rates Using External Power | Shoot 4k 120 / HD300 Over SSD on GH6 & G9m2 - YouTube

Then when Panasonic quickly followed up with the GH7 providing PDAF and internal RAW (albeit limited) and effectively EOLed the GH6 (read: no more firmwares for you, Mr Jimbo), I was seriously fumed.

And then on the full-frame side the 5-year mark came and went last year with no sight of a Mark II for my 2x S1's and I started seriously looking at the Z8 with internal RAW 8K 60P (requiring zero external crap-ola) and decided it was time to jump ship. So I ended 2024 with what I consider the true S1 Mark II, my Z6 III with internal 6K 60P RAW...just to get my toes wet in Nikonland.

Now that we've all waited until the 6th anniversary of the S1/S1R and this release falls woefully short of anything I would consider merits a Mark II badge (read: external power for basic functionality, yet again?). Ouch, Panny.

Might rent it and see how it does with adapted M-glass. So glad to see they shrunk it, the S1R was such a chunk.

I found that neither the A7R V nor the R5 were useable for shooting hummingbirds with the electronic shutter. The mechanical shutter obviously solves the problem, but at the cost of speed and a lot of audible noise.
