Anyone actually own the 50?
I want to try one even though I don’t think it will be worth it-
The size being a huge factor- Also owning the 50 Lux, not sure how this can top it.
I may snag one at Adorama in town later this week and test it out.
After several mixups with my sales rep, mine is finally on order RF mount. I plan on ordering the 85 when available. I was never bothered by the size of the EF mount Otus lenses which I have 28,55,100.
Ahh the 50 Lux, my favourite all-time M mount lens.

I sold my Lux CF after buying the 50 ML despite the massive volume difference. I sold the 28 APL VM and will patiently wait for the 28 ML as the 28 Otus was one of my favorite lenses of all time.

I am going to check it out tomrrow at Adorama- I would have today but they are closed for holiday!

It will be interesting to see if Zeiss goes with a 28 next or if they go 25 or 35. Logically it would be the 28 but I have seen some people hoping for a 25 or 35.

The original quartet was 28, 50, 85, 100. So, I'm expecting Cosina is probably going to take whatever they learned from 28 APL and apply what they can to the 28 ML.
28 isn't nearly as saturated as 35mm and they still sell the Batis 25, so most likely it will be 28.
The 100mm was released end stage of the Otus line and since they are just releasing 85mm, they probably wouldn't release the 100mm so soon.

Nikon Z8 + Zeiss Otus ML 50mm f1.4
I had serious doubts having shot the ML Otus in the city, but it did very well in these landscape images I captured earlier this week. I intend to keep the lens for now. Unfortunately I injured myself before my intended destination and could therefore not test the lens for grand landscape this time around. I'll be back in the wild in a few months hopefully.
I haden't use the Z8 for landscape for some time since the GFX-100II has become my main landscape camera. I had forgotten how smooth the experience is and how much better the lower res EVF is to assess critical sharpness.

Spent a bit more time with this lens-
I hate to say it but its a keeper-
I was skeptical, I thought it was going to be to big, I thought the MF experience couldn’t rival anything on Leica and it would just be an expensive piece of glass that didn’t lie up to the hype.
I am really really impressed with this little gem of a lens- The fall off, the somehow hard to spot focus point of what’s in/whats out of focus on a portrait, the modern yet somewhat vintage looking bokeh-
Really surprised how much I like the look of this lens. Also- The Canon MF experience is quite impressive-
More images to come-

Nice images, thanks for sharing.
Does it also jump automatically to the eyes at 100% when shooting people like on Nikon bodies?
Cheers,

I thought Nikon had the best implementation-
Canon is actually better IMO. There are two symbols that come together to tell you when focus has been achieved and the box turns green. I haven’t used magnification once and everything has been spot on.

Really really impressed with it.
But what area of the image does that green box refer to? Do you need to manually move you focus point to an area of the image?
Btw you also have those focus indicators on Nikon bodies. The key value is that the camera moves the focusing box to the eyes for you. Where you can zoom if you want to.

Eye AF works and will pickup a subject anywhere in the frame if you want it to without moving the joystick.
I understand how the Nikon works with it and have used it extensively with Leica/Voigtlander glass on the Z63 and Zf. I find Canon’s implementation is a bit better done. Nikon has done a much better job of marketing this feature though.
It’s really nice on the Canon side that you get two arrows that show the focus coming together, almost like an RF patch then it goes green once its confirmed.
Nikon is also nicely done but wasn’t quite as simple. Up until recently, I did think it was the best on the market until now.

When I saw how Canon does there’s, and forever now, I was surprised I didn’t hear much about it…then realized, unless I’m mistaken, is that that is only for manually focusing Canon glass. It seems either I misunderstood, or these work as well, as they’re designed with that in mind? I’m just wondering all what MF glass I can get access to the focus confirmation Canon uses. I don’t think Voigtlander is compatible?
There are limits to Nikon’s with some glass, but there are workarounds and some of the features still work for their focus assist.
I’m a frustrated Sony user as they’ve yet to address this, hopefully they do soon, but whether they bother releasing FW for older cams would be in doubt with how they operate.

Nice shots.
The lower res EVF works better?….is that because of looking for some “shimmer” or similar?
Thanks
Thanks!
Simply because the pixels being larger it is easier to assess the sharpness.
I have the chance to compare it with the 9mp EVF of the GFX-100II (which is truly beautiful to watch, probably the "best" EVF on the market) and the lower res of the Z8 is preferable to assess sharpness in the field.
Same for a post processing screen btw. 4K screens look great but hide imperfections compared to full HD screens.

Voigtländer (40/1.2, 50/1, 75/1.5) and Zeiss Otus ML lenses (50/1.4, 85/1.4) that are available natively for Canon RF mount are licensed via some contract between Cosina+Zeiss and Canon and they support electronic communication, EXIF etc. with Canon RF cameras so I guess that could make them compatible with Canon's manual focusing aids. Not sure if that'll work with any other lenses (adapted and such) that have no electronic communication...
I'm a Sony + Fuji X + Sigma fp user so I don't have personal experience with Canon's or Nikon's manual focusing aids. Personally I think those aids might help primarily with portrait shooting by guiding the focus to the subject's eye, but for anything other than portraits I think they might not be so useful. I'm personally happy with the old peaking + magnification methods and I don't shoot portraits with MF glass much at all, although I use MF glass a lot overall.

If the lens can talk to Canon EF it will also be supported with focus aides on EOS R/RF mount. All Zeiss ZE lenses can use same focus aides as Voigtlander and Otus ML for RF mount.
