Looks like the 35mm f1.2 is going to be another awesome lens by Nikon. I look forward to seeing the photos people take with it once it starts shipping. Maybe once sales start I will consider getting one.

While over all I really like Nikon's approach to their Z lens lineup, I do also see the holes created by not having more third party options.

Let's take 35mm, we now have (rounded):
35mm f1.2 at 2,800 for ultimate IQ
35mm f1.8 at 850 for very good IQ in a fairly compact form factor
35mm f1.4 at 600 for people looking for more light or a more classic rendering style

Now take Sigmas 35mm E options (rounded):
35mm f1.2 at 1,500 For very low light and very good IQ
35mm f1.4 at 900 For low light and sharp wide open
35mm f2.0 at 640 for a compact prime

Personally I see them more as complimentary options than competitor options. Then I think of the larger market where Canon only has 2 35mm options. If Nikon suddenly had 6 the Z mount they would start to pull way ahead in terms of lens options. Especially with it sounding like the Z mount will be joining the cine world soon and Sigma also making cine lenses.

These are not remotely comparable lenses in the big scheme of things.

If this is your answer to the existence of this lens then you were never in the demographic for it to begin with.

Some more Z 35/1.2 S footage, at the end a few short A vs B comparisons with the Z 35/1.8 S.
But be careful, the footage of Philip Fung, especially at a dream location for such a shooting, arouses
desire.

Yeah a lot of the shots look really good minus to out of focus ones in that video. I wonder what Manny Ortiz is going to say about this thing even though he's so up the butt of Sony and Hassy I doubt he's going to be unbiased

I suspect Julia is in that camp too. At least Petapixel discloses their Sony and other sponsorships on their website.

I think Julia owns Sony gear and anything you see her using for a non Sony lens review is loaner gear. Manny at least owns some non Sony stuff. Like if I did a "what's in my bag" video all the Nikon and Fuji stuff would be stuff I legit own at the very least.

It's a shame that Nikon doesn't branch out for their "user generated content". Their official ambassadors are boring as hell for the most part, and there are so many people in the Nikon world doing far more interesting things than Julia putting a model in front of a bush for the 100th time.

I will take one Joe McNally over 10 Julia's. Nikon actually added a few more over the years, they're not all old people. One of the newer ones I like is this person here: https://www.instagram.com/d.annboal/

I'd like to see them use some of their less known Ambassadors more. Up here we have Viktoria Haack and Taku Kumabe who always deliver interesting stuff. Viktoria's environmental portraits are bloody amazing, FAR better than Julia Trotti (who shoots pretty much exclusively head and head & shoulder shots of female models with OOF bushes, her stream is very monotonous) and Viktoria is a superb landscape & wildlife shooter too.

https://www.instagram.com/viktoriahaack/

Nikon has some top-notch Ambassadors, but they don't use them as well as they could.

(disclaimer, I've known Taku for a couple decades, since he was a magazine guy dabbling in photography)

Just get Jerry Ghionis and Dixie Dixon to do something for it. I think the guy behind Underground NYC is borderline an ambassador at this point. They have a few people they could throw at this, they just tend to not for some odd reason.

Ok, but he does beautiful work and he's straight up (dinkum in local vernacular). And his location shoots around Melbourne showcase one of the world's most beautiful cities (along with Brisbane and Sydney for that matter where he also has taken us).

I pre-ordered one with the NPS Priority. If it went through quickly then I should get it first week it's released late February + I'll post sample photos here.

Have been waiting for a super-fast wide angle (ideally was hoping for a 24/1.4S or 1.2S), but if this 35 is anything similar to the 85/1.2S (since same price point basically), then I'll be happy as heck.

Only problem now is it's another lens in the bag (35/1.2S, 50/1.2S, 85/1.2S, 24-70/2.8S, 14-24/2.8S, 20/1.8S) for my wedding work. Might have to sell the 24/1.8S and/or the 20/1.8S to downsize.

So kinda funny: https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/viltrox-af-35mm-f-1-2-lab-sony-e-will-be-announced-before-the-cp-show/

Viltrox going to announce their 35/1.2 LAB for Z mount very shortly. Said to be smaller, lighter and 1/4 the price of the Nikon. Considering how good the 135/1.8 LAB is, this could be serious competition.

Good! More competition the better. Hopefully their 135 comes to Z as well.

I oddly don't care about most Viltrox things unless it hits X mount. I'm interested in the 16 1.8 at least.

Great synopsis. This tiered lens approach enabled me to happily consolidate into a single system instead of owning 3 completely separate camera systems (formerly Canon DSLR; Fuji GFX; Leica SL). I now cherry pick the Z lineup alone for my varied practical/documentary and creative/fun needs and don’t miss the best aspects of any of my former kit. It is going to be hard to resist getting this 35/1.2. Looks stellar for contextual portrait, and if it also works great as an Astro and landscape lens I’m getting it.

The price is high. The size is huge. That said, I think Nikon knows its market and has a smart strategy. Their best lenses they don't make small. They do not undercut the competition in price. They do, however, make excellent lenses that people who are willing to pay for these lenses enjoy. These lenses now include 35 f/1.2S, 50 f/1.2S, 58 f/0.95S, 85 f/1.2S, 135 f/1.8S Plena, 400 f/2.8 S TC, 600 f/2.8S TC. The 14-24 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8, and 70-200 f/2.8 mostly follow this strategy as well but they aren't as extreme in performance, weight, or price

Their 135mm lab is heavy... which is the deal breaker for me
