Interesting write up… I want to get offended by you not finding the Nikkor the sharpest… UNTIL I realize (to me) it’s like megapixels, important, to a point.
Appreciate the commentary… and, like you, I’m always curious about the behind the scenes processing by each manufacturer.

I have the same experience when adapting my 135mm GM/Batis and my 35mm GM on my Nikon bodies.
They just don't have the same sharpness and contrast, maybe Sony adds some processing in their raw files depending on the lens.
I also own both the 35mm APO SL and the Nikon 35mm f1.2S.
The 35mm APO SL only shines in the center of the image wide open on my S1RII. It is much better on my SL2 and even mid frames are very strong. I can't explain why, maybe because of the sensor difference.
Futhermore, I found the 35mm APO SL to have sometimes a sort of slight "illumination" at the point of focus, making the subject to pop a lot. But this effect only appears when shooting photos and can't be seen on the viewfinder before taking the pic, it only appears when the photo has been taken. And it never happens in video, so I think it's just some processing.
My Nikon 35mm f1.2S is maybe one of the lens I use the most. The contrast and colors are out of this world. However, the lens is clearly not as sharp as the Sigma 35mm f1.2 DG II and much less less sharp than the 35mm APO SL or Sigma 28-45mm (I tried 3 copies of the Nikon). At least when using ACR (default settings) to process the pictures.
Using NX studio with default settings shows better "sharpness" but it doesn't look natural and we can't add the Leica files on NX studio to compare....Show more →

Started reading a bit on this lens recently and ran across an image of a lady and her young son talking with a fellow next to a motorcycle. iirc was an Italian city. the image, for multiple reasons, just blew me away and really has me thinking a 35 1.2 might be the coolest city/street/reporter type lens to be had.
Crazy $$$ (for me at least) but what a killer setup. The Fro review of it hit the nail on the head when he talked about making for fantastic environmental portraits that tell a story.
It's on the list but likely won't happen any time soon.

A 35mm f1.2 has indeed a unique look. It is also impressive when taking videos, even more when the camera has excellent IBIS (for when your record while walking by example) and Open Gate like the Lumix S1RII or S1II.
I use the new Sigma 35 f1.2 II on these cameras and the videos are really beautiful.
I admit I prefer the rendering of the Nikon 35mm f1.2S but the IBIS on my Z cameras is much worse and there is no Open Gate option.

Can you post a link to that image? I would love to see why this particular photo had so much impact on you. I own the Z 35 f1.2 S and I think it is one of Nikon's finest lenses ever.
Sorry I don't have picture upload membership here.
Fortunately, PL supports deep linking. Here's the image. It's a great one, but it also does a great job of showing the CA that keeps me on the 35/1.4 for now — and please don't defend it or justify it, because my willpower is paper thin right now
(Most evident around the couple in the background to the right of the motorcyclist.)

So the fringing that I said was SUPER EVIDENT at launch that everyone berated me for mentioning is now so obvious that people would rather use the 35/1.4?
There isn't a correct emoji for this level of satisfaction

Well, it's more that I already have the 1.4 (and its own laundry list of issues). It's not that I'd _rather_ use it — it's that 35 is my least-used prime length, and I can pretend the fringing is a big deal. That keeps my budget healthier.

super evident? really? wow this is like playing "where's waldo" on LoCA. for that image i'm more bothered by the fact that it blows out the highlights almost completely and abruptly...could be the JPG quality...but the contrast is so high that ideally the photographer should have used a fill-flash or used masking in PP to process the highlights vs shadows differently.. but i think the photographer exposed for the shadows when he took the pic making it impossible to recover highlights.
also that extreme lighting condition will be challenging to any other lens...i would wager that even the mighty (and even more expensive even when buying used) Leica 35 APO SL would have had issues with that as well.
but as the philosopher that goes by the name Taylor Swift said..haters gonna hate. 🤷

I actually agree with you- I would guess none of that is viewable in the original picture- The shawdows looked pushed to a point its almost an HDR photo-
