p.1 #1 · Light Lens Lab: Film Project Announcement

From Light Lens Lab:

We are excited to announce that, to celebrate this special occasion, we will begin researching, developing, and producing photographic and cinematic films.

Our initial research has yielded promising results. Our first emulsion test indicates that our black-and-white T-Grain silver halide structure research has succeeded. We conducted a test shot using our Seagull Upgrade Project TLR Camera. However, the antihalation layer was not applied to the film during this testing phase. A new antihalation layer will be utilized for future films.

Our goals for this project include researching, developing, and producing films through the following development processes:
  1. Black and White film with T-Grain Structure, with speeds ranging from 100 to 1600
  2. C-41
  3. E-6
  4. Instant Peel-Apart Film
  5. ECN-2 for cinematography
  6. And more in the future

We also aim to produce films in various photographic or cinematographic formats; please stay tuned for future releases.

The Film Project will utilize our newly developed proprietary machine and emulsion process, allowing us to be self-sufficient in our production.

This film project will be marketed under a different brand name, so please stay tuned for future updates!

Frankly there is plenty of B&W film on the market.
What is needed is color C-41 film and that is what they should first focus on.

I welcome more competition in the film market, but so far I have been disappointed since all the new upcoming manufacturers adapted to the high price levels from Kodak Alaris and Ilford instead of challenging them with significantly lower ones. Wouldn't be surprised to see also here - even made in China - including implemented tariffs about the same price level compared to other manufacturers.

Personally I want to see film prices at pre-pandemic levels. Yes, inflation kicked in etc etc - but with more competition in the market especially for B&W films, prices should be going down and not up.

I'd like to see everything at pre-pandemic prices, but sadly, that ship has sailed...

Most of the 'new' color film emulsions (i.e. the ones not produced by Kodak) have revealed the insane engineering marvels that we are lucky to receive from the company in Rochester. It appears that creating a black and white emulsion is like assembling a Model T and making a color emulsion is like designing the Starship Enterprise. They aren't in the same league...it's barely the same sport...(hence why the new-comers are...um...not to many people's taste).

I'll be excited to see more competition in the marketplace. More is more...in this case.

We'll see what LLL is able to bring to market from that list. I love the ambition, though!

And I will add "C41 film that is not cinefilm without the remjet".

if anyone says they wish they would make a Kodachrome film, I am going to go over to their house and let a little bit of air out of their front bike's tyres, and add a little to the back tyre.

Hey! I just posted a bunch of Kodachome pictures in the Finally Digitized thread! Ifv they ever do make peel apart instant, I hope it's better than the current SX-70 film.

There's at least six threads on photrio about LLL bringing back Kodachrome.

Well...maybe...I don't know. I haven't been on photrio since board 36 was created.

I respect the goal and I am rooting for them, but Velvia, Portra, Acros, FP4, HP5, and Retro 400S cover all my film needs. Will keep my eyes open in case they bring something novel to the table.

I might be waiting for 10 years, but I guess I’ll hold onto my Polaroid packfilm cameras.

You can still get packfilm, but it costs about $25 per photo when you buy the Supersense packfilm (currently listed as sold out but I think they're working on new batches)

https://the.supersense.com/collections/packfilm

Hopefully LLL, being in China, will be able to offer it for less if they manage to succeed in manufacturing it.

Even if they bring back a Kodachrome style film...who is gonna develop it?

One without the other is kinda useless.

Also...I assume that LLL aren't actually the manufacturer for any of these theoretical films. Someone is just white labeling it for them to their specs...which is totally fine (and probably for the best). Maybe Yes! Star, who is making C200 and C400 for the Asian market (?)...Maybe Lucky...I'm sure there are others...China is a big country after all...

I wonder if the Lucky factory is going to make LLL film. It can’t be a coincidence that Lucky also announced new color film.
