I remain unconvinced that the AF motors are going full tilt in this type of test. The PDAF input is essentially a "no idea what we are looking at" and the aim of AF is to scan in a random direction for something worth focusing on.

Non-technical feedback here

After shooting with the lens for about a week, I’ve found the autofocus to be snappy and it locks on very well. It's as fast — or faster — than my 200-600 when capturing moving subjects. The weight hasn't been an issue compared to the 200-600 IMO; I’ve only shot handheld with it. All the high-res shots I posted earlier were handheld as well.

A few adjustments I've had to make... the zoom ring is very smooth and easily moved — which is both a blessing and a burden. A little more tension would be ideal. I'm hoping the added friction from a lens skin will help keep things in place. (1st world problems)

As expected, I’m shooting at higher ISOs, since the lens starts at f/8. I’ve found myself using slower shutter speeds when the subject allows, which helps keep noise manageable. I’m looking forward to lens profile updates from Adobe and/or DXO.

My copy of the lens is very sharp throughout the zoom range — no complaints. In fact, it appears to be sharper than my 200-600, and that lens is already a sharp copy.

It also handles the 1.4x TC much better than I expected. At f/11, you do need a lot of sunlight to keep noise levels down.

It’ll take some time to get used to working distances and minimum focus range for smaller subjects. At f/8, depth of field is razor thin. I’ll be giving f/11 a try to see if I can get more of the subject in focus.

All in all — after a week — I’m very pleased with the lens's overall performance.
I live in Arizona and we get about 330 sunny days a year — this lens will do just fine here. If you live somewhere with frequent low-light conditions, this might not be the lens for you, as ISO levels climb quickly when using it.

As for the lens foot... "stubby" is how I’d describe it. It could definitely be longer (insert inappropriate joke here). I’m looking forward to replacing it once something better becomes available.

I agree about the rings being too easily moved...setting 800 and seeing lesser when looking at meta.

Douglas Tree Squirrel (chickaree). For those unfamiliar with Western squirrels, it is smaller than an Eastern Gray squirrel, which is smaller than a Western Gray Squirrel, which is a listed species in Oregon, and threatened in Washington State.

OMG.....the AFC works using pdaf sensors,.... how do you think it
it focuses?
With contrast!!! phase detectors work on contrast..
If an object is distant and the plot small the search for contrast will be much more complex....

No, it's not using contrast: PDAF measures phase shift, not contrast levels.

CDAF is the one using contrast.

Specifically, PDAF measures phase difference of light coming from different parts of the lens. It calculates how far and in which direction the lens needs to move to achieve focus.

As long as there is some difference, even often invisible to the human eye, it will focus correctly:

Example: A white object with a faint shadow might shift from 250 to 245 on a 0-255 brightness scale.

PDAF detects this shift as an edge and calculates the focus adjustment.

The example we're seeing is nothing like a 2% difference, it's actually huge, it's really an easy task for the PDAF system, so much that it's completely irrelevant if the subject fills the frame or not.

ChatGPT - Older bucks usually shed earlier (as early as late January).

Younger bucks may hold antlers into March or early April.


Odds are, they will drop them very soon.

the difference between the light area and the darker one is given by the "contrast", between light and dark, or do you think there is a "positive and negative electric current"? if you only read on google without understanding what really happens you will just use word….but without understand the meaning , the contrast AF is simply different from the phase AF because it does not have receptors to read if the cdc determines a forward or backward movement and must try until it finds the greatest contrast.
the phase one, by analyzing how the “blur” appears (difference in contrast on different lines of the receptors), knows whether the focal point is forward or backward and as it goes towards the greatest contrast the receptors receive an increasingly smaller phase difference up to the limit point given by the distance between the two closest receptors.

without contrast the pdf does not focus ANYTHING! just put a gray sheet without contrast and try to focus…

Seems like you don't understand at all how it works so I have to give more explanations.

Phase IS NOT based on contrast, it's the light phase, basically if light is a waveform, it tells you how many waves it has.

The PDAF is splitting the image into 2 images: left and right.

By comparing left phase vs right phase for an equivalent pixel, you can tell the distance of that pixel (or how much the lens needs to move to get that pixel into focus).

The only reason that some form of contrast is needed is because the camera needs to be able to map all the pixels in the left image with all the pixels in the right image, and it does that by finding edges and mapping them, this creates "pixel pairs".
However, even if some pixels cannot be mapped (ex: no edge was found) then an intelligent system like the one in the A1 can still find the missing pixel pairs, because it can use surrounding pixel pairs to guess the missing ones.

As I wrote above, even a very small difference is enough for the camera to be able to do the mapping.

Also when the sensor as 759 PDAF points, in fact those are logical points, physical points are much greater in number, like 1% of the pixels would be PDAF points meaning 500k, meaning 660 physical points for every logical point, this allows to deal with noise and have even more reliable measurements, and also accelerates the camera processing by having fewer points.

The "blur" is not being analyzed at all, what are you talking about? This is not "Depth from Defocus", which is a form of contrast detection autofocus (CDAF).

If you need more explanations, I can give, but I don't want to turn this topic into a "PDAF" topic. Maybe PM is possible then.

Edit: I want to specify that the PDAF gives DIRECTLY the distance. There is no "iteration" process like what you're alluding to. Phase doesn't just give the direction but also the exact amount for the lens. The iterative process is used by CDAF. So it looks like you think PDAF is just CDAF but with a direction. It's not, it gives the final answer directly.

First, the edge is possibile if there is contrast, if you don’t have contrast you cant see any edge.
The waweform that is read by the pdfaf is base on difference between 2 adjacent areas, based on contrast, you probably miss the simple definition of contrast, the receptors read “lines” (in fact they read horizontal or vertical lines…or cross-shaped), if the surface has no contrast points the PDAF system (that works like on receptors used in the submirror reflex af) does not know where to go at all. The operation is similar to that of a leica rangefinder, if you do not have contrast areas the rangefinder cannot give the vision of the phase shift, it is not a laser rangefinder, contrast is the basis of what you continue to “try” to explain, trivially without contrast there would be no waveforms, the reading would be a flat line, and the two lines used by the phase receptor would receive the same information.

Receptors can determine position, not distance (that is calculated by the camera…,not from the sensor, only after finding the focus, and with information provided by the optics used), and without information provided by the optics used….only a laser or ultrasoud rangefinder can determine distance…

Once this is done, then the PDAF is giving for every single pixel the exact amount and direction for the lens to move to, in order to focus on that pixel.

Actually no, it's able to give the distance, and establish a depth map. You don't need a laser or ultrasound rangefinder.

as i said you are talking about things you don't know (i've been afraid of it for 40 years) carefully mixing things taken from the web... take your camera, point it at a smooth gray sheet and see if it focuses! knowing the distance is not making a colored map, because if the cdc is too wide the phase cannot be read... not even the basics. i'll stop here, i really don't feel like arguing.

The last image, the big buck, I've tried to photograph him on four occasions and he will not look my way. He just puts his ears back and walks off. I hope to snap some shot of him soon, before he sheds his antlers. All in all... a nice morning out.

It's as good as it gets, why wouldn't it be? The A6700 is top of the range, comparable to A7RV.
Handling a long heavy lens with the small body and side mounted EVF is slightly compromised, IMO.
