Received my copy a couple days ago. Went out for some test shots with my local somewhat easy to shoot subjects, in the they sit still. So far I like the lens. Lighting definitely needs to be good for this one. None of these are cropped.

Not too suprising. The silhouette of the bird is partially obscured by the post. Not to mention the coloring is very similar. Throw in barbed wire and chicken wire, and I think many cameras would struggle. At least Sony bodies. Maybe the Canon’s might do a little better

Did you switch to spot AF?
On Canon bodies I have two AF back buttons (one for eyeballs/subject zones and one for spot), but on Sony I have a button to toggle between modes.

I was using small spot and putting it right on the bird. The bird was about 50 feet away so the small box covered its whole body.

I was shooting my A7RV with 400-800 today and had a few times AF couldn’t find the subject despite being in the optimal config. Each time I just gave the focus ring a little tweak and it found it. Full time DMF on is great as a helper for tough scenes!!

The little buck was so close I think most of the images were at 400mm, no crops. Him and another buck were devouring acorns and didn't care in the least I was around.

It was nice to see a few turkeys in the area as well.

Enjoy the day all.

p.31 #8 · Sony 400-800 f/6.3-8 G It's here!!

I watched Dustin Abbot's new review of the 400-800mm last night and to be honest, it didn't move the needle for me as much as I'd hoped. He harshed my buzz a bit with all his practical advice and commentary and since I also have an amazingly good copy of the 200-600mm, his direct comparison left me less excited about having 800mm than I initially was. While it seems the AF is improved and more modern on the 400-800mm, but you need the light to take advantage of that better A/F, at least past 595mm where your A/F system is stuck with F8...

The only big plus for me is that the 400-800 looks way better to me at 800mm than the 200-600mm can do with the 1.4x TC. The weight and size will always be there though.

Man, I really wish there was a A/F TC option for the Sigma 500mm Sport... or for Sony to release a similar small 500mm... or an updated 200-600 with built in TC, that looks as good at 800mm, but now that they released the 400-800mm, I truly doubt there is any motivation inside Sony to compete with their own existing offerings.

I still lust after the 400-800mm I guess, I just don't feel the same level of urgency... maybe this will allow me to be patient and wait for a deal to add the 400-800 to my 200-600mm, instead of letting my 200-600mm go, which scares me in case I have buyer's remorse and wanted to flip the 400-800mm.

@Erictator No knock on Dustin or anyone else doing reviews. IMO it's best to either rent or buy the lens to see for yourself. I've had it for a week now and it's better than my 200-600 in a number of ways. It's sharper with extra reach. I can now zoom zoom to 800mm with the option to go with the 1.5x APC crop mode and reach out to 1200mm. All this while not needing to add a 1.4xTC. Which, BTW, does surprisingly well on the 400-800. I never really used the 200-600 with the 1.4xTC as I thought the images were too soft for my liking.

Cons of the lens... slower shutter speeds to avoid higher ISOs or higher ISOs to gain shutter speeds. Everything has a tradeoff. At really long distances the backgrounds can appear to be a little busy looking. It can crush backgrounds if you are not shooting extreme distances. At 15-50 ft the DOF is very thin. My copy is sharp through the focal range as well, it's sharp at 400mm all the way to 800mm.

Give the lens a try if this is the focal range you are interested in. Honestly, if the Sigma 300-600 F/4 wasn't as heavy as a Volkswagen Beetle, wasn't limited to 15FPS (thanks Sony!) and accepted teleconverters (thanks Sony!) I would have purchased the lens. I might still but having 800mm native is very nice and something I don't know if I want to give up after shooting with this lens.

Just my $02.

I just finished placing the new lens skin on the 400-800. I have no affiliation with this company, just thought I would give them a try. It's thinner than a typical lens coat skin but very well made. The added tension on the zoom and AF rings is exactly what I was looking/hoping for. The fit is very snug, my fingers are mad after putting this thing on the lens . The company even provides a wrench for the lens foot which is a nice touch. The price wasn't all that bad and it made it to Arizona from China in about a week. I purchased the Desert scheme, looks just like the photo.

All in all... very nice product which should keep the lens free from scratches for years to come.

Enjoy the day all.

p.31 #12 · Sony 400-800 f/6.3-8 G It's here!!

FWIW - I had the 400-800, tested it for about a week and sold it.

Ultimately I realized a few things:

  1. I don't value zoom versatility, I prefer to just get framing right with my feet or prime focal length
  2. on the 400-800 more than any other lens, I kept bumping the focal length ring and would end up all over the place. very annoying. wish they included a lock
also, I probably am not the intended audience since I would pin that lens at 800mm for 90%+ of the time
  3. The OEM foot and hood both are lacking. I expect Wimberley/Zemlin will fix that eventually
foot is far too small, hood is too large and heavy
  4. IQ of the 400-800 was very good when filling the frame, but fell off fast when cropping
  5. Rampant CA with the 400-800 more than any lens I've ever used
hopefully should be an easy fix with software when DXO gets around to it
  6. I got much better results IQ wise with the 300GM + 2x and then cropping to 800mm equivalent FOV, than with the 400-800
for this reason, that will be my choice. significantly smaller and lighter, while being faster and better IQ.
  7. The 400-800 is what I consider a big and heavy lens
if I'm going to take a big and heavy lens out (as opposed to 300GM), I may as well just take a 600 f4 out. they feel the same, fatigue the same, both need support, etc.
  8. Reviews overall have been pretty mixed. People coming from 100-400s and 200-600s seem to be pretty impressed. Those with access to 300 f2.8s, 400 f2.8s or 600 f4s are less impressed. As expected I suppose. I think I fell victim to the hype train reviews and expected far more out of the lens than I should have given it falls into the "budget" category.

  9. Of our local group - most shoot Sony now and 6 of us got our hands on the lens. 5 of us have or are reselling it. But then again - all of us have the 300GM, 600GM, or both.

as with most things, I think it'll depend on your current lens setup, your budget, and use case. for those of us with access to the wildlife primes, I don't think the 400-800 is a very easy sell. especially if you're considering traveling abroad and space is already limited. if you can afford the 300GM and don't absolutely need zoom versatility, it seems like a much better option.

a couple users from Arizona have stated they love it, and get 330+ days a year of sun. Here in Michigan, its potential is a lot more difficult to unlock

I will say the image (when filling the frame) is very sharp. and the AF was incredibly fast. it felt on par to my Nikon exotic lenses when used on a Nikon body.

If you're someone who doesn't have access to one of the wildlife primes, I think you'll probably be very happy with the 400-800.

I can't argue with most of your points in the thread, I will say CA hasn't raised its ugly head, at least I can't tell, maybe it's just the subjects I'm photographing.

I've rented the 300GM and the 600GM (amazing glass) and for me the 400-800 is working well. I wasn't a fan of swapping out the teleconverters with the 300mm and 95% of what I tend to photograph is at the 600mm range, the 2xTC was nice but it wasn't much of an improvement over my 200-600 in the end. The 600GM is next level compared to the 400-800 and it's amazing with the 1.4xTC on it. The weight and size are not horrible. I'm finding the 400-800 sits in the middle with some compromise. It's not light weight but not crazy heavy, who wouldn't want f/5.6 or f/4 but I'm producing nice shots (to me) and it's 1/2 the cost of the 300 + a 2x and it's 10K cheaper than the 600mm. As I've mentioned previously, there's tradeoffs. I'd love to own the 300 or 600GM, but based on my shooting habits/style the 400-800 is working for now. I still love the 200-600 and I don't see me selling it.

I can see the struggle people would have living in Michigan or anywhere low light conditions are the norm. I couldn't imagine shooting in the deep woods with this thing, not ideal.

As I mentioned, I wish Sony didn't set the limitations they have with Sigma as the new Sigma 300-600 F/4 could be a real winner. The weight is nutty but like anything ... compromises.

I've babbled enough... I think people should rent the lens and shoot with it if they are on the fence, or buy and return/sale it.

It's not a "one size fits all" lens by any means. Here in AZ where we have tons of sunshine, it's working out well for me.
