p.2 #1 · Buying a 7D in 2025?

Mike_5D wrote:
I used a 5D3+100-400II for soccer. Then I added a 7D2 for more "reach". It was OK, but I wound up preferring the files from the 5D3, even with cropping. I never got a 5D4 because it looked like an incremental upgrade without solving the major issues I had with the 5D3. I held out for the R6 which I'm still using.

Ditto
I did try the 7d with the 100-400ii once in the early days but the short end equivalent to 160mm was way too long, missed so many pitch side shots.
I tell ya, I still love my 5diii…I really do. Puts a huge grin on my face when it comes out.

I own a lot of bodies and none come anywhere close to the wonderful ergonomics of a gripoed 5diii… absolutely love her 💕🥰

7D uses the "old" sensor. Compared to newer Rebels (e.g. SL2) there would be that difference of 5D3 vs 5D4 in the sensor performance.

Pretty minimal difference between the 18mp aps high iso vs 24mp aps. Like I mentioned, 24mp aps has more DR but aps isn't top DR

18mp aps is really pretty modern performance even today. 24mp doesn't beat it by much,

7D was a 2009 body and kind of the bottom of the barrel compared to similar croppers of late 2000s to 2010s.

I've often thought I wouldn't pick one or the other based on raw iq. High iso pretty identical, 18mp vs 24mp aps resolution is too.

If the op needs DR aps isn't ideal anyway. can use the 5D4.

Hey all,

Thanks for all the input! Based on feedback here, my needs and budget, I'm probably not going to purchase a 7D, I or II. It was just a whim because I saw a cheap Excellent copy on KEH lol

Going from 7d to 7dmk2 was a nice step up. I wouldn't touch a used 7d, bet the mk2 isnt much on the used market. Jp

Good decision! I looked at my 7D RAWs last night to write something informed here, and, yes, you have saved some $$, space and annoyance for other whims. Those I´m very familiar with.

I find it sad how many now rubbish the older DSLR’s despite many loving them back in the day.
Kinda reminds me of the kid who ditches his longtime friend when a new cool kid moves in nearby.

Technology moves on though and DSLRs haven't seen any advancement in a number of years. Improvements I care about like high ISO performance and subject tracking are the domain of mirrorless today. Sure, I loved my Commodore 64 back in the day, but I don't know what I'd do with one today.

Actually, you could probably sell your Commodore 64 for a sizable sum, which makes me wish I kept my Atari. So maybe, one day, the 7D will be as "valuable" as PnS cameras are nowadays lol

You noticed too!
My G12 & G16 that I bought for literally pennies a few years back are going for stupidly high prices these days. I kept all my old digital compacts. Plus all my old DSLR’s too

No, that thing is long gone unless it's sitting in a box in my parent's garage rafters. I honestly don't know, it's been so long.

18mp is basically modern performance, if you think 18mp aps is antiquated you're probably not going to be happy on 24mp aps. Basically no difference on raw except DR , not generally a strength of aps.

Latest mirrorless often has less of the DR people get so excited over. See graph above, D7200 beats the A9III and Z6III even though it's aps!!! So much for a 2015 DSLR being obsolete.

I sold an old Canon PowerShot G9 X in 2023 for like $250. Felt like I hit the lotto with that one lol

If you have a 1DXII and 5D4, why would you want a 7D? I guess another question would be how much would you pay for a 7D?

Not me! I was unhappy with the AF performance of the non-1D bodies (I owned XT, XTi, 30D, 40D) in the past so much that I simply bought a journo beater 1D2n in 2010 and stayed with it for any fast and/or thin-dof shooting for further 4 years, until I found out that SL1 (which I bought to upgrade mt XTi for walkarounds and also some video work) while not as fast, was basically as accurate with fast lenses as the 1D2n. And yes, I tried friend's 7D at that time, and no, it was not better than the much older 1D2n.

I'm not sure I'd buy a 7D today unless it was a clean copy at a bargain price, but I do still have mine and use it occasionally. Still works great as long as you understand its limitations compared to more modern bodies, and it's been DURABLE (the Kai W. video is what convinced me to get one, too). I've taken some of my biggest sellers with my old 7D, and no one so far is the wiser about which camera I used.

Compared to newer bodies, of course it's lacking in AF and noise performance, but there's something to be said for using an older body like the 7D now and again as a learning/refreshing tool to improve your entire process - from image capture to post processing to final print - and that's kind of how I think of it today a lot of the time.

I suspect that some users did not have the high grade cameras soon after they were introduced and were not fully aware of the differences between the various camera grades. I hauled around a bunch of 1Ds series bodies as main cameras from 2003 to 2012 because that was the best in Canon at the time. Even after the 5D III in 2012 the 1Ds III was better for some things up to 2015. If all someone was an xxD then it probably seemed good enough. Most people that got a 7D also had some FF body at that time.
