p.1 #1 · Northern Saw-Whet Owls

Short of a long story - able to hook up with a renowned NSWO expert a couple of hours away and fortunate that he led me and a couple other photographers to two NSWOS who were very accommodating to our photography shenanigans.

Incredible experience and majestic, tiny raptors for sure! The NSWO in the last three shots has a vole in its grasp. Tried to better showcase it - but limited in maneuver space and did not want to spook the little guy.

Tech notes - this was a spur-of the moment adventure and did not have time to go home and grab my 70-200...which would have been perfect...so made due with the incredibly sharp Nikkor 24-120/4 S lens.

Thanks for checking them out.

Morris, Greg, and John - thanks for checking them out, the feedback and posting. Yes - these guys are truly fit in the 'finding a needle in a haystack'. Without assistance and guiding, not sure I would have seen them...albeit..they left quite a bit of sign (whitewash and pellets) at most of their favorite trees....so one on the look would at least be alerted).

John,
Would this happen to be near the Hawarden IA area?
I got a tip for NSWO & a LEO in the area.
Beautiful photos!

Eric - concur...very mesmerizing and thanks! My kids think I had some AI program create these shots...!

Bob - somewhat, vicinity of Ida Grove and based on your profile...not far from you at all. And thanks for the kind comment!

I've searched high-and-low for these little beauties, heard one, once, some years ago. Beautiful set of images...I'm both jealous and inspired to keep looking!

Greg - thank you very much!

Jimmy - yes, very difficult to locate for sure....as Douglas mentioned...without my resource, would have never had the chance. Granted, the location is two hours north of me, so that may help in availability. The other thing I found odd was they were perched within a well-occupied part of a town park. So - these did not require a 2 hour hike into gnarly woods to see...which was a huge surprise to me.

Douglas - yes, it's not what you know....it's who you know! Thanks for the kind comment!
