p.5 #1 · Canon R5 Mk II - battery issue in cold weather
I have read in a Facebook group of a couple of people having problems in 40f weather with this camera and others having no troubles at all. I have not experienced any problems yet down to 15f. I am starting to think this is not a firmware issue because everyone should be experiencing the same issues at the same temperatures.

1D mark III deja vu....serial numbers of cameras and date codes on batteries might be required now to figure out the mystery...bad batch somewhere?

Could be bad batch of batteries/components. I sold my R5 to MPB after I purchased MK II before I read of this problem in the cold.
I just re-purchased a black Friday special R5 to sit on. Didn't open it . I have some trips in the next few weeks, hoping I don't have to break the seal on the R5, I have till January 31 to return if the MK II doesn't become a problem in cold temperatures!

Im headed to Tetons mid December. this thread made me a bit nervous. Have used the mkii down to 3 degrees for short periods. left it and 100-300 in my truck overnight to try to replicate a full day out in winter temps. and shot a few hundred pics in the morning. nightime low of 5 defrees farenheight. No issues yet no real prolonged shooting with cold battery/camera. Fingers crossed.

I'm beginning to think it is a interaction between a firmware thing and battery condition (with regard to the "awaken from sleep" issue of the OP). I am continuing to do tests (in addition to what I posted earlier in this thread), but here are a few more observations:
1. I have five batteries. Four of them show the problem, but the fifth does not. My tests have all been in the temp range of mid 40's down to upper 20's.
2. Using the DC Coupler DR-E6P and the Canon power bank, instead of the LP-E6P battery, the "awaken from sleep" problem does not occur even when the camera is left in the cold for 4+ hrs.
Recall that popping the battery out when the problem occurs results in avoidance of the problem. This means it is not simply a battery issue. But the fact that at least one of my batteries does not have the problem suggests that it is not simply a firmware issue either. Waking from sleep must have different fault tolerances than a full restart after the battery is reinserted. Interaction, and conditions not fully understood.
I need to do more testing in even colder temps, but I may purchase a couple new batteries on the hypothesis that different batches of batteries may uncover the firmware fault differentially. All my current batteries were purchased at release of the camera.
Hoping Canon sorts this out before I head out to some serious cold temp shooting in Jan.

Lithium Ion batteries lose a large part of their cold weather performance when they have been used for a few years. It could be that to get good cold weather performance with the new R5 II, (relatively) new batteries are needed. This may be something to report to Canon; maybe they can develop compatible batteries that work with the R5 II and continue to work for a longer time, or there could be a firmware update to address this, or both new batteries and new firmware.

What was wrong with Sony? I'm heading in that direction.
The sony menu was difficult for me tor me to get used to having worked canon for so long. I'm told that once you get the camera set up, you very seldom need to dive into the menu. I believe the menu has been improved too in the 5 years since I tried sony. In any case, I never was comfortable with it.
The other issue is my collection of canon EF lenses. With the canon EF-RF converter they all work like a charm. I didn't find the sony canon converter as transparent. Pretty sure a nikon canon converter will similar. For that reason, I've stuck with the ef lenses except for the 14-35, 24-105. and 100-500. The EF lenses don't have some of the issues with the multipliers and others are simply not available as RF. While I'm willing to conceded the RF lenses are probably better optically, I'm sticking with the EF particularly on lenses that take giant filters as I can use the converter wtih the filter slot.

I have four batteries here and they all have a similar date code which appears to be May of 2024 if I'm reading it right. Does your one battery that works have a much different date code than the 4 that don't work? Bottom left corner on the back "2024 PEW 05XX A"

I was hoping that was the answer too. However four of the batteries have the same code and the fifth was different. That fifth one was NOT the one that didn't produce the error.
firmware v 1.0.2 update is out which incorporates support for frame rates of 23.98fps/24.00fps when using the LP-E6NH and LP-E6N battery.
I am hoping that this fix does something for the referenced cold weather issue. Hopefully one of the people indicating issues can download it and try it in the cold.

I updated today, but the temps have risen to well above freezing. As soon as we get a cold front I will report back.

Today brought much colder temperatures (-10C/14F) than during my previous experiences with the drain. Running 1.0.2 I left with 100% charge and was out for about 4.5 hours. When I returned home I still had 95% charge which accounted for the little shooting I did and regular checks of the battery %. If there was an issue I am thinking it was something with specific setup parameters or use cases which is why not everyone was seeing it. In my case the problem seems to have been addressed. Be interested to know if others are experiencing the same.

Thank you NormQ. The feedback I have seen (no issues, some issues, multiple battery issues vs none) suggest that you are right that it is a related to a specific setup. On one occasion I had to reset the camera to get my screen to work and it was also a specific setup which I forgot what I did. So the R5ii might have so much coding in it that it trips over itself, we will have to know the setup when people report the problem or someone with problems will have to do a camera reset to test for this. [And who knows they may have accidentally fixed the 'freeze on sleep in cold' issue.

Final update. I was out for 4 hours yesterday and 5 today in -11C (12.2F) - much colder than when I originally noticed this issue. Yesterday battery performance was on par with the R5. Today I did no shooting. I left with 100% charge and came back with 98% which accounted for activations and setting changes. It seems 1.0.2 has resolved my issue.

This is the first day that I got an opportunity to try my R5 MK II in cold weather. We were out looking for snowy owls, and it was -6 degrees C but the wind chill off of Lake Ontario was like -12 degrees C. I didn't get to take a great deal of shots (about 750) but that was due to the subject, and we were out for 4 hours. I had the latest firmware 1.0.2 and it used 1 battery. With the wind it was chilly.

I will mention this just for FYI and I had encountered this with my Canon dslr's.....to solve it I bought a couple "hand warmers. They kept the batteries nice and toasty.
Also there is a company that makes a camera and lens warmers..Ruggard is the company..B&H has them.

four days in the Tetons. Overnight lows around 7*f highs arround 25*f. I was switching back and forth between and R5 and R5mkII. lens were 100-300 with 1.4, 500mkII with 1.4 and a 70-105. i switched camera bodies for sunrise photos and used both Big white lens on both bodies as I wanted to compare DR and autofocus stickiness on eyes.
Batery life seemed similar and no issues even on a day that included 4hours in single digit temps. No firmware update on MKii yet.
lowlight high ISO files are slightly better on original r5. both easily cleaned up in post. R5mkii stickiness in challenging light and background noticeably better. Using them back to back to viewfinder on the mkii greatly enhanced the shooting experience.
