p.1 #1 · North of the Arctic Circle in Norway

I had the pleasure of spending two weeks in northern Norway in late September/early October. The hiking views were superb although trail conditions were pretty tough (tons of mud) and the weather was uncooperative. The second week we had gray skies and rain nearly every day. Below are a selection of my favorites from the trip.

Lovely images 👍🏻 You just refreshed my memory of my visit to Lofoten in July. I flew in and out of Evens and spent a week in Reine. I hiked Ryten, overlooking Kvalvika Beach on a super sunny day and was a wash for photography. Thanks for sharing these. Good reminder that I need to work on my photos.

Thanks for the compliments. We flew into Tromso (via Oslo), made our way down to Reine, returned our rental car at Evenes, and then flew to Oslo for a day. One advantage of traveling to the far north in the fall is that you get nice light for a larger portion of the day. I've heard that during the winter you can get golden hour light for nearly all of the daylight hours. Looking forward to seeing your photos!

Thanks Doug. Henningsvaer is a lovely little town and that view is definitely the most popular. It also happens to have the best bakery/cafe that we found during our time in the country as well as the best fish soup that I had.

Back to gaze at this wonderful set again. I think #10 is my favorite, it gives a very calm, peaceful vibe. The rainbow shot is also a fave. Great to see images from Norway.

Deserving of thread of the week 👍🏼

Absolutely awesome, I have a trip here on the 2nd March, Segla looks incredible, planning to do that hike regardless of the weather.

Any tips or favourite locations?

The hike up Hesten to see Segla was awesome and was definitely my favorite hike. A bit challenging especially toward the end where you first climb up to a ridge between Hesten and Stavelitippen, scramble across a rockfield at the top of the ridge, and then climb up a steep section of boulders. We went down the other way to the "meadow" or saddle between Hesten and Segla, which gives more great views of Segla. The trail here was harder to follow as people had made a number of their own trails across the meadow and back to the main trail that you come up.

My second favorite hike was Ryten, which gives a great view of the Kvalvika Beach. Not sure how it'll be in March, but it was very muddy especially in the upper steeper section that's the final ascent to the viewpoint. If you can, stick closer to the left (facing uphill) where there's a trail that parallels the top of the cliff. We cut over to it as the other trail that goes across the main slope had a lot of springs, mud, boulders and holes hidden by vegetation, etc. The cliff top trail was in better condition and had better views on the way up. There's also a different trail that leads directly to the beach, but I'm not sure how that is.

Sommaroy is a nice little village in a beautiful setting with a single hotel (Sommaroy Arctic Hotel) that's a good stopping point if you're taking the Botnhamn-Brensholmen ferry. That ferry will cut out a significant amount of driving if you're heading to Senja/Segla from the northeastern islands. We took the first ferry in the morning (get there early...although in March there might not be many cars) and were amongst the first cars at the Segla parking area. We then stayed in Mefjordvær which is on the opposite site of the fjord from Hesten/Segla.

Feel free to PM me if you want more info on any other towns, places to eat, etc. Most of the other hikes we did were easier/shorter due to family we were traveling with that weren't as fit, but they still some nice views.
