p.1 #1 · I had to photograph the comet

I took some very long focal length shots of just the comet, but I'm more of a landscape guy so these are the ones I really went up there for:

#1: This is the shot I thought about from the outset:
https://photos.smugmug.com/Arizona-Landscapes/Catalina-Highway/Mount-Lemmon-Vistas/i-J34VncZ/0/Lq3DHPMmvDLzLc4vrJ4dQMtWqzRBdKGNM3mWFFBwP/4K/Three_Wise_Men-4K.jpg

#2: Since the moon was so bright, as the sun set, the landscapes become more "well lit" in the longer exposures for the comet:

#3: And of course I couldn't resist a B&W shot (although this one was also multi-spectral - shot with my full-spectrum converted camera and using no filter of any kind)

As always, CC are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

Great set Dave, especially liking 2 & 3 which give me a scifi film vibe.

Excellent demonstration on how a landscape works with this comet. Super well done.

I'm partial to the second, but would personally darken down the sky and horizon a bit.

Great comps and while I usually side with color your B/W is a home run. While the rocks may seem unusually bright that Hunter's Moon we are having REALLY lights things up at night.

Thanks! That was almost the shot I envisioned when I went up there to photograph the comet.

Thanks! After I spent some time walking around and lining up the compositions, the comet splitting those two rock formations was just the right combination of dramatic, and achievable (there was actually a place to stand with the tripod), so I went for it.

Thanks! Adjusting with the sky is key on these. I tried some darker skies on this one, but with the moon lighting everything up, it just sat funny. I'll have play with it a bit more... perhaps darken the foreground accordingly. We shall see. Really appreciate the comment and the suggestion!

Thank you so much! Yeah that moon was definitely lighting everything up. It was actually such a beautiful night. Walking around among the rock formations up there. The temperature was perfect and the moonlight made it easy to navigate. And of course there was a comet hanging in the sky, easily visible to the naked eye despite the bright moonlight. A wonderful night all around.

Beautiful work! I like the colors and light in the first one most, and prefer the composition in the second most! Thank you for sharing!

These are lifetime images Dave! Just so well seen and composed!!!
I still have my Hale Bopp film photos framed. They are in NO WAY as excellent as these!
Just beautiful!

I enjoyed all three, each with their own personality. #3 looked like it was taken on another planet was my first impression until my logical brain ruled it out. In the end, I will maintain it was shot from another planet.

#3 kind of looks like it's from Dune. Great shots!

To be fair, the rock formations out here can be pretty otherworldly. Putting a comet in the scene is almost like cheating. I'm glad you enjoyed the photos!

You know when I re-read the books a while back and he talked about Saguaro's being on Dune, it reminded me of how when I moved out here I thought it was like living on an alien planet with all of the bizarre cacti everywhere. Now it's just home. Thanks for the feedback!
