I created this post to get some more information from the owners of this lens regarding the whining noise created by VC system. Recently I bought this lens and to my surprise, its VC mechanism is much louder than for example Sony 200-600 lens (which emits some noise but is not so audible). In normal shooting conditions like landscape and casual wildlife, it's not noticeable, but it's easily noticed during shooting from hideouts in a quiet environment. Do you have a similar experience with this lens or my copy is 'defective'? Maybe some of you noticed this and replaced his copy with a new one, which was much quieter than the first one. I could return it and get a new one, but I'm afraid that the new one will be the same, and the whole switching will be a waste of time. Otherwise - an amazing piece of glass. I bought it to take it for landscape shots as well as a backup wildlife lens.
I noticed some random posts here and there about this 'issue' but nothing that would 'solve' it once and for all ... I think that this post could help new users of this lens to be more confident that their copy is defective or it's normal - based on a big community of more experienced users of this forum.
I have this lens and it does have a quiet whine when it’s on. Never noticed it before you asked though, I had to mount it to verify. I didn’t think it was audible more than a foot or two away from the camera.
Great lens, I’ve been really happy with it for sports shooting this past summer but I’m selling mine to fund other lenses in the off season. Anyone interested PM me.
Many thanks grahamgibson for checking that out. I also wasn't aware that this noise is something that can be noticed during normal shooting (and that's true), but in the hideout, where it's completely quiet it can be noticed with ease.
