Ah sorry!! Thank you for finding the correct video. I didn't realize I made a copy and past mistake.
I fixed my original post by putting in your link. Thanks for finding this.

I got it, but it's just the same link copied twice. I clicked the second link, and I thought I may need glasses because the lens looked exactly like the 85II, and it was the 85II lol
That's why I posted a corrected link. FM kills the time part for no reason so I had to wrap the links into bitly.

It's a great price for a 1.4 lens, but 1.2 would cost ~$1k more. I don't remember exact numbers, but I paid something like $2600-2700 for the RF85/1.2 and +$300 more for the DS version. Nikon would charge about the same for their 85/1.2Z....Show more →
Yes, you are right the Canon and Nikon 85 f/1.2 lens are $2,700, and $2,800 respectively and the DS Canon version is $3,000. I too would expect a Sony 85 f/1.2 GM to be in that price range if they make one. It is still hard for me to call a $1,800 85 f/1.4 a budget lens, however.

Inflation, not fun
However, the new 85mm GM II is being launched at the same price ($1,800) as the original 85mm GM back in 2016. So no inflation if you look at it that way.

Anyone post this comparison yet?
I didn't know the test report yet. But actually nothing new.
The Sigma comes off somewhat badly in terms of AF speed. To be honest, I couldn't confirm that bad. But I also don't know what kind of body he used. It wasn't that significant on the A7 IV. On the contrary.
You can see how bad the bokeh of the 85 GM I looks with the green fringing. I actually like the Sigma bokeh the best.

I think the AF was during video capture. Stills may be a different story.
I also think the Sigma is slightly longer in focal length vs. all the Sony lenses. Which is closer to true 85mm? Hard to say
But shot from the same distance, that does give a slight edge to the Sigma in terms of bokeh ball size. It would be interesting to see the Mark II and Sigma comparison if they were framed the same to compensate for the slightly wider Mark II. Which I think is what you would do IRL when taking portraits
I’m still buying the Mark II, but the Sigma does appear to be a compelling option. At a fraction of the price of the Mark II

It's insane how much a premium f1.2 commands over f1.4. 1/3 stop difference is not at all material in real world use. I'm glad Sony went with an 85 1.4 for the MKII.
I have a foot in the nikon lens system via the Zf, and the z mount af 1.2 is a non starter for me as I don't see it as being better than the GMI for all practical purposes...not only in terms of price but size.
I do love the massive Sigma 35 1.2, though it's a matter of rendering and not aperture

I think we’re a lot to be nitpicking on AF and bokeh because the price is pretty steep compared to the Sigma, while the IQ and AF of the Sigma are already pretty good. Had this lens been f1.2, the difference would have made the choice easier.
I have no doubt the GMII is the best, has better AF (all reviews say it, and even though I trust the feedback we have here are honest, I’m tending to think this is more of an abnormality.
Now, the GMII doesn’t suddenly make the other lenses less good, and I must confess the latest review posted above looks kind of suspicious. The Sigma AF has never been reported to be that poor, nor the GM I that fast…

My impression from the video vs my own experience was the focus speed "slowness" on the DN was due to it being video. My perception using it for photo is that it is much faster. That said the DN is not quite there for sports use, at least my poor sports anticipation, where I rely on the camera get the focus in a much shorter time than it took me to figure out where the ball is going. The 135GM and 50/1.2GM are faster for sports than the 85DN. I'm thinking the 85GM II will have an advantage over the 85DN for AF speed.

That was my impression as well. The AF of the Sigma during video looked like it almost defaulted to contrast detect AF the way it overshot for an instant and came back.
I have no doubt the AF during stills is much faster

I have no idea why the OEM is come out with a Friday release date. Perhaps they are giving their shipments all week to get to the distributors.
It very well could be discounts given to retail stores like Fed X as those days may be light shipping days so they pass that savings to the retail stores as they offer free shipping. So for BH anreven Sony that shipping to new owners and for Sony to stores simply maybe be cheaper and light ship days for Fed X

Yep, BH just shipped mine, arrives tomorrow (Friday)
