I bought this set of legs new from B&H ~15 years ago, I got it specifically to use with an 8x10 field camera because my other tripod and head couldn’t really handle the weight of that camera. I’ve used it every time I shot 8x10 but I also didn’t really shoot 8x10 all that much, so realistically they haven’t seen a whole lot of use. They also never got more than a couple of hundred yards away from the car either.
Which is to say this set of tripod legs is in great shape. There are a few marks around the head platform, I don’t recall any impact at all, it’s probably just from being in the trunk of the car with some camping equipment.
The action of the legs is very smooth and consistent - both the extensions as well as the angle locks. It had the same head on it the whole time i used it and i probably only removed it 2-3 times so the top plate is relatively clean as well.
The plate that the head attaches to on this series of tripods is friction fit with a screw providing tension. Since I was carrying a fairly large camera on it I added a plate to better secure the head plate. I can’t remember what it was called but I bought it through B&H. Adding that plate required replacing the original 3/8-16 stud with something longer so there’s a high-quality stainless hex head 3/8”x16 stud in place to hold the head.
With this “modification” in place the head plate is totally secure. You can also remove the security plate easily, replace the stud with a shorter one and save a few ounces of weight if you want to.
Gitzo G1348 (3 series, 4 leg sections)
Length (closed): 24”
Length (fully extended): ~66”
Weight (with head plate in place): 5# (weighed: 4# 15.6oz)
Let me know if you have any questions about it. Pair this with a suitably stout head and it’s a great tripod for any larger camera: DSLRs, mirrorless, medium format film cameras, 8x10 field cameras etc…
