I generally find their resolution testing to be quite good and they are very thorough and consistent in their methods. But the rendering between the 1.8 and 1.4 is somewhat different and lens-tip is agnostic on that subject. I find the better corrected 1.8 to lack some of the artistic (read character) flair and is somewhat clinical, more so on a Z7II than a Zf, a camera that I find takes the edge off of a clinical rendering style. I am willing to overlook the faults of the 1.4 for the extra 2/3 stop for extra creative control and what to me is more satisfying images that leave me warm inside and not empty like the 1.8 can. Just my personal preference. If doing inanimate objects, landscapes, the 35 1.8 certainly is the lens to get. I was impressed overall with it when I had it.
I am happy with the 35 1.4 having used it for a while now. It replaced my wonderful but adapted and very chunky Tamron 35 1.4. But I had to buy the lens twice before I settled into that final decision. I see others here though have the same impression but its not for everyone. I do like the wider pitch ribs. I somewhat loathe the dust magnet form of the S versions. I could see some photographers having both versions. Nice to have choices here.

The lens looks incredible nice to me and it may be the reason why I am about to purchase my first Nikon camera. Over the years, I had a lot of different setups, currently a Sony with several lenses, the GM as my 35mm lens. The lens is superior but it lacks „soul“ to me, especially for family and friends moments. I used the Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 Nokton Classic before on a M body and loved the results, but unfortunately, not the manual focusing. So, I am hoping this lens could be my Nokton replacement with similar characteristics and the Nikon Zf a modern camera in an old, vintage packaging.
So, if some would like to share more with the lens, especially portrait stuff, I would be super happy. Coming from the clean buttery smooth GM bokeh (boring), this looks more like an artistic approach and basically what I love about photography.

I have so much fun reading through all 11 pages of comment :-) I wish Nikon will came out with the 1.4 first before the 1.8s. To be honest, the 35mm 1.8s never "wow" me. Looking back, I knew now that is because I was using the z6ii instead of the z8. I was also comparing the image of D810 with Tamron 35mm 1.4 vs the z6ii with 35mm 1.8s. The Tamron lens is one of the best lenses I ever own (I have the Zeiss 35mm 1.4 zm, Leica 35mm 1.4 FLE II, and Sony 35mm 1.4 gm). I sold the Tamron, regretting it, and bought another one later. I don't think I will ever part with that lens, even though is a huge lens.
My point being, I don't understand Nikon's marketing strategy. At the time, when they need to convince "us" (DSLR users) to buy into the Z system, they gave us the 1.8 series of lenses. All the articles says they are great, but in uses, it doesn't stand out comparing to the best of what dslr lenses are available. The new 35mm 1.4 would have been a much better choice: it is cheap, and it is 1.4. It is a reasonably size 1.4 too. To put into perspective, the Thypoch 35mm 1.4 is manual focus and cost more. For all the sample image I have seen, it looks to be at least on par with the 35mm 1.4g. I am glad Nikon finally gets this right.

If anyone is interested, I posted a review of the Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.4 on my review/travel blog this week with sample images captured with the Z6 III:

I decided to try the 35mm f/1.4 Z again as a relatively light f/1.4 option for my Zf and Z8. This copy seems much better than the first one I tried when it came out. I like what I am seeing as well as the faster aperture and lower price over the f/1.8 version.
Here are few at f/1.4 with the Z8 with my test scenes in the house with minor edits and de-noised in LR-

I am going to pick up the 50mm f/1.4 based on my impressions of the 35mm f/1.4. Maybe an 85 in the future?
The 35/1.4Z is what initially caught my eye when considering getting back into Nikon for the ZF. I haven't picked one up yet, just been waiting for a local deal. I got the 50/1.4Z instead when I found one for the right price. By all accounts, the 50 is a fantastic lens, thought to be the better of the two by many on this board.
I would probably get more use out of the 35, so I will probably wind up with one before long- but it overlaps so much with other 35s I already have or are thinking about getting lol

I didn't have a 35, and I wanted something in this focal range with AF and not too heavy. I already ordered the Viltrox 50mm f/1.4 Pro along with the 85 Pro, but the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 is attractive for half the weight. However, I think the Viltrox is the better lens if you can deal with the 2x the weight. I didn't really bond with any of the Nikon f/1.8 options as I prefer the faster aperture and a bit of character.

A most insightful video comparing the three Z series Nikkors at 35mm: f1.2 - f1.4 - f1.8. (you can speed up the presenter 50% in YouTube Settings, and/or use Subtitles). It seems Nikon made the f1.4 to please users of the predecessor DSLR G lens, in addition to the 'ED lenses' for those who want the look being heavily pushed by the lens design community - 'AI like perfection at all costs to picture quality'. They deserve credit for this strategy, pleasing both camps.
So both 3D models are available - (i) the layers you get from super sharp focal planes and rapid moves to soft enveloping bokeh; and (ii) the traditional lifelike rendering with smooth transitions, (much) kinder face renderings and no bland green screen effects. The more you photograph people, the stronger the case for this lens, my opinion.

If you like the look from the 35Z, I don't know why you would get a Viltrox 50 instead of the 50Z.
I actually ordered the Viltrox 50 before I picked up the 35 f/1.4Z at a local camera store over the weekend. I looked at several reviews and really loved the images I saw from the Viltrox. Although after trying the Nikon 35, I second guessed this decision. After trying the Viltrox 50 today, it is really outstanding, but the jury is still out.
In Dustin Abbot's review of the Viltrox 50, he makes several comparisons to the Nikon.

Should be entirely possible to make a similarly-sized 28/1.4, and they've done it in the past. I would much rather they give us a 28/1.4Z instead of a 1.8 or 1.2(!?). The wonderful but kinda boring 2.8(SE) already exists, so they need a bigger gap if they were to bring another 28 prime; but this is also why I don't expect us to see one anytime soon.

Starting to test this against the 35 EVO. It's not as soft as I was warned about (unless wide open at MFD) and it certainly has more predictable and less egregiously chaotic bokeh.

I would kill for a 28 S, whatever the max aperture. I love the 24 S, but in some situations shooting people it is very wide
