p.3 #2 · Canon departure thoughts

I’m going to reply to several posts in one message so as not to contribute too many messages to the board all at once.

It isn’t that I expected that the R5ii would be anything other than what was announced at this point. It was pretty clear what was coming. So this ins’t a sort of immediate disappointment following this week’s announcement. I’ve had these thoughts for some time, and nothing here changed them.

I should also mention that switching is a huge decision for me as I make very little money. Many on this board can buy and switch gear as though money is no object, but I am not in that camp. Or on that planet. Or able to see that universe. I cannot afford to take this decision lightly; hence the discussion and desire for input.

I can afford a complete new system (from Canon or someone else) since I’ve anticipated that I would get one at some point — from Canon if what I like appeared or from one of the competitors producing gear that might now be a bit more in line with my needs and expectations.

But like you I do not take switching lightly. The last thing close to a switch that I did was more than two decades ago when I moved from film to Canon digital. (I did add a Fujifilm -C system to augment that perhaps a dozen or so years ago, but that wasn’t a “switch” per se.)

And it is pretty clear from the responses that you aren’t the only one considering this. (It is equally clear that there are other folks who are quite pleased with Canon’s direction, and they deserve tuo be heard, too.)

BTW, what would I do if I had already bought in to the R5? I’d keep it and my new RF lenses and go on using Canon. What if I was already invested in RF lenses and still had something like the original AR? I’d certainly consider the R5ii. The cameras are still fine tools. But for those of us who haven’t bought into the R system at this point, the decision is a bit bigger than that.

You’re contradicting yourself, but I understand where you’re coming from. I want 100mp, but it’s not actually going to improve my photography. I may still get 100mp one day, though.

It isn’t quite that simple. At some point, almost everyone arrives at a point where they would like to or need to replace equipment. At that point, you look at the options and evaluate them against your needs and the costs/benefits. (See my comment above for a bit of explanation.)

Switching brands isn’t likely to make the quality of your photography (e.g. your vision, etc.) change much at all. But when it comes time to purchase new gear — in the normal scheme of things, not because one is pursuing some ephemeral Best Gear dream — it can sometimes make sense to look beyond the brand you use, depending on your specific circumstance.

I don’t think Canon is leaving anyone out to dry, but rather that they are the Toyota of the camera world. They offer cameras that do the job without many issues. The R1 is for pro sports and journalism shooters who need top speed, reliability and high speed access but no redundant resolution which only slows them down. The R5II is for anybody who wants a top-not h camera that can cover everything from wildlife, to landscape to events, etc., etc. I believe this is why Canon will remain the market leader.

Sure, you don’t get the highest resolution, but
...Show more

I think your analogy to Toyota is not bad at all. Canon generally produces a pretty wide range of solid stuff that meets a wind range of needs. It is generally well designed and reliable, and they have a fine service networked to back it up.

Of course, a Toyota isn’t always the answer! ;-) (I”ve had a few, and I still have one. But I also have a Tesla…)

To the point about GFX, I’d say you are partially right, but for me that part you didn’t mention still holds me back. I’ve tried GFX cameras and lenses and they do many things very well. Unfortunately, while the Fujifilm lenses for the GFX system are excellent, they don’t (yet?) provide the kinds of coverage that many of us rely on in our landscape work, specifically when it comes to longer focal lengths. (I rely on FLs from 16-400mm for that, and I use longer lenses much more often than wide.) Yes, you can adapt longer lenses to GFX, but it’s not the same. (I’ve considered it, and I still might. The EF 100-400 with the baffle removed is said to do pretty well with a few caveats.)

That’s what inclines me toward Sony. When Sony mirrorless first came out, I wasn’t willing to leave a mature system of lenses and bodies (including that fine 5DsR) for a system that originally relied a lot on adapting (mostly Canon) lenses, and which had some significant issues with things like AF. But in the years since then Sony’s lens line-up has become essentially as mature as Canon’s, and their cameras are arguably at least as good and perhaps more capable.

We’ll see… As I wrote, I’m not in a hurry…

I think that’s a reasonable way to describe the reaction some of us have. I was quite encouraged over the past year or two that there would be a R5”sr” with perhaps a 80MP sensor. Canon certainly dropped a lot of hints about such a thing. That’s why put any switch plans on hold, even though I continued to ponder, research, and keep my options open.

But there’s nothing to suggest that anything higher than 45MP is coming now. (There’s a good argument to be made that if you are already invested in RF lenses and you are good with 45MP and you like the other features of the R5 bodies that they are still a fine choice for you. Same applies to the R1.)

I think it is a misconception that you must use all of the brands before making a decision. You certainly want to know a whole lot about them, but you can’t really “know” the full suitability of any system just by using it for a few days or weeks. (I learned that lesson when i first augmented my Canon system with a smaller Fujifilm system years ago. I struggled with it at first, and I began to wonder if I had made a mistake in acquiring it. But after a few months of heavy use I learned it as well as I knew my Canon system and its use became intuitive.)

In some ways it may be better to take a look at friends and colleagues who use various brands for more intensively than we might during a short test run. While I have briefly used the GFX system, I have good friends and excellent photographers who use it, and we’ve had some serious discussions about what it does well and where it is week and how that may align with my needs I have a bunch of friends/colleagues who use Sony to do work similar to what I do, and the same applies there. I have several who use Nikon.

Dan.

Recently Canon is going through a reorganization (laying off many) bringing in Isao Kobayashi as CEO of USA operations. Perhaps Canon recognizes many of the issues being discussed in this thread.

The OP - why wouldn't you just get whatever camera(s) / lens(es) suit you best in addition to what you have? It's not a marriage and you're legally allowed to have multiple cameras from different manufacturers. If I was primarily interested in birds, I'd definitely have a Canon camera + the 100-500 and 200-800 and a Nikon camera + the 600TC. Maybe even a Sony camera for the 200-600 and #1 AF (which could be dethroned by the new Canons - TBD). I can also assure you the Canon CEO won't feel personally attacked if you buy a Nikon or Sony system
All brands offer certain unique features that others do not have. It's also a cat and mouse game. If something is missing from your system today - it may well show up tomorrow, right after you sell your gear for peanuts.

You start out with a point I agree with. In fact I’ve made the same point frequently to argue against overly-exuberant switchers: Just because Brand B just came out with something that is better than your Brand A, don’t switch. The next iteration of your Brand A is almost certain to one-up that latest release from Brand B. It is a game of leap-frog.

But that’s not what is going on here, in my view.

In this case, the issue is precisely that this did NOT happen with the new Canon releases. Typically, in the normal course f things, we expect to see Canon “one-up” the previous versions of similar gear from other manufacturers — as I said in my little paraphrase above.

But this time, in at least some ways that are important to some of us (YMMV), Canon did not one-up anyone with their new releases. In some ways they have have equaled the previous releases by the competitors, but it some other ways they did not even quite meet the same standard.

For the record, I don’t disrespect anyone for deciding that sticking with Canon is their best choice. In earlier posts I described scenarios in which that sounds like a great approach. But for some of us in different circumstances, this moment seems like a good time to consider other options, too.

With all due respect, if you don't see Canon has been playing catch up, then you are intentionally looking the other way. How old is the A1, and how many more months before the A1II is released? Where is Canon's 61MP body for the landscapers? There are many other examples like lenses, etc, etc., but the flagship and high res high speed bodies are the big issues being discussed here.

Since Canon did not release a flagship yesterday, that means it took 3.5yrs for Canon to respond with the R5II, which some would argue might be comparable or slightly better 3.5yrs

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on the whole who's catching up thing because it's simply based on the manufactures scheduled release cycle. Nothing more nothing less. Just like we're seeing right now with the old outdated R5, the competition still hasn't "caught-up" in many regards, so who's to say that isn't going to be the case again with these two new Canon bodies. As you know, words written on spec sheets don't always tell the full story. The user experience is where the rubber hits the road and not one single person here has had that experience yet.
Not to go off on a tangent too far here but hell, I even question the R5II sensor read speed that everyone keeps tossing around. I assume it's accurate, but I noticed over in the R1 thread the other day some misinformation being spread around of it's read speed being slower than what it actually is and had to be corrected in that discussion. Does anyone have factual measurements of the R5II or was it also just based on the same inaccurate logic that someone used on the R1? Has anyone like Snapsy actually measured it yet?

Don’t like Canon, go buy and use Nikon or Sony, or vice-versa. Can’t take good photos using any of those brands, learn how to take photos.

Guess some people get more satisfaction from whining about what their X or Y gear can’t do or should do.

Boring.

That's cool Lighthound, all good. I'm sticking with Canon but I understand the frustrations of the two main crowds who are bailing out.

As for the R5II, I have no idea what the readout speed is but I'm sure Canon made it "just fast enough" to cover most all shooting conditions. I know Nikon will say the Z8 is faster/better in this respect, but I'm sure the R5II will do just fine for most everything people shoot other than the ultra high speed stuff.

As for the R1, I have no idea, time will tell.

R5II's will work fine for me and things I like about it are:
-14 bit
-improved readout speed for less rolling shutter (good enough for most everything)
-Pre-capture is not something huge for me but it will be a good option to have
-Tally lamp - cheap thrills for me as I'm doing a lot more video and I'm stoked on this little light. Can't tell you how many times someone thought they were recording with my body and they weren't.
-Wave form
-C Log2
-AF - this is the big one for me that's convinced me to preorder. I'm hoping the AF in video mode for shooting large apertures will be greatly improved

One thing I haven't seen anyone discuss yet, is how the take photos during video feature works. Interested to see more detail on this.

Attention Lighthound, the TC lenses, just another area where Canon is playing catch up. How about that old 500II, where's the new versions of either the new prime or 200-500 zoom? I love the 500II as much as you do, but at the pace canon is releasing gear it's causing everyone to question Canon's path and they are bailing out, just as you see in this thread.

Really? Canon has had a built in TC lens for 11 years. Let's hope it doesn't take Canon as long as Nikon to catch up.
But yes, there is no arguing Nikon's got the lead for now on a fantastic wildlife lens lineup.

I was very disappointed yesterday watching the release to the very end hoping to the love of god they would at least give us hope for the RF 500. The hope for this lens is the main reason I didn't plan on upgrading to the R5II. Between an affordable lightweight 500 f/4.5 and the R5II I would have jumped on the lens first.

Oh, and don't be talking any smack about my girlfriend Mr. Her sexy curves are just as appealing as her bright f/4 smile.

On your comments about wanting more resolution and longer focal lengths, I see your point. I don’t shoot much landscape, but when I do I find myself shooting at longer focal lengths. I don’t need super large prints, so I happily use my MFT kit to cover those focal lengths.

The Fuji GFX system is indeed meager in that regard, but it’s the only system (next to Hasselblad) that offers a real jump in resolution and other advantages of a larger sensor.

At the same time, I doubt going from the 50mp you have to 60mp on a Sony is going to make much of a difference.

The next question is of course how many megapixels fit on a FF sensor without negative consequences. Since Sony seems to lead the FF megapixel race, I guess we’ll see when they announce their new batch of cameras.

I loved my 200-400 TC back in the day and I guess this is where some of the frustration comes from. We all know Canon is more than capable of building these lenses as they've already done the built in TC thing like you mentioned, but they are just taking soooo long to do it. I was so stoked on my RF400 and I would still be stoked on it if Nikon hadn't released their Z400TC. That's when you learn when others have better options and it's a huge deal to have that option IMO.

Not talking smack about the 500II as it's a great lens. But yeah, how nice would a modern lightweight version be?

After I watched the release video yesterday it became clear why Canon hasn't brought anything to the table for the mid range wildlife arena yet. They are and have been going after the content creator market heavily. Almost every single body or lens they've recently released is aimed towards this. Hopefully they have a small team in the back room working on lenses for the mid and high range wildlife lens crowd. They most certainly aren't ignoring Nikon's success with their wildlife lenses so it's just a matter of time. I have a few more good years left in me to spend with my girlfriend, but hopefully we see something soon.

I think majority photographers would agree that Nikon's telephotos are simply amazing and in terms of body/lenses the best bang for the buck. Nikon will continue to release stellar telephotos. Their recent 28-400 was praised for its performance to price. It's crazy to think that its already been 3.5 years since the A1 was released and 2.5 years since the release of the Z9. I think the next iterations of both the A1 and Z9 will be insane, especially with the acquisition of RED by Nikon.

I was in that boat recently. I haven't done nearly as much bird photography in recent years as I used to, but retirement is coming soon and photography will again become a big part of my life hopefully. I had a 600 IS II, but wasn't enjoying using it because it was so unbalanced and heavy. The service life is soon to expire and I felt it was time to dump it while I could still get a decent price for it. I seriously thought about switching to Sony or Nikon, but I just felt comfortable with Canon cameras in my hands. Money is a huge issue for me as well and the cost of putting together a whole new system from scratch for all the things I like to photograph would be prohibitive. I ended up selling my 600II to MPB for more that I was expecting and got a refurb RF 600f4 a few months ago and absolutely love it. I like the way it balances and I find its performance with both RF TC's to be terrific. I have owned all the Canon 600 f4's over the years (except the EF III) going back to the original non IS in the 90's as well as the EF 800L. If any of those lenses have anything over the RF 600 + RF extenders, I sure don't see it.

One man's meat is another's poison, but I also like the RF 100-500 for its compact size and don't find adding the 1.4 when I need it to be 700mm an issue at all. I use it mostly for wildflowers and really use it with aftermarket extension tubes more than the 1.4x. A few weeks ago I picked up a "like new" RF10-20 for a great price and have been having a blast with that lens and wonder how I managed to get by with only 14mm at the wide end for all these years. Staying with Canon isn't necessarily as bad as some people make it out to be.

I'm disappointed in the level of improvement, and lens offerings. They make some incredible lenses, no doubt about it, but man.... the A1 and A9III are sweet bodies too. The next revisions of those, and some good aftermarket glass? Sounds nice.

I'm excited to pick up another R5 in the future when the used market hits $1500 soon
