You’re contradicting yourself, but I understand where you’re coming from. I want 100mp, but it’s not actually going to improve my photography. I may still get 100mp one day, though.

It's crazy isn't it! Canon just released two world leading cameras that surpass all of the competition for their intended purposes, yet all you hear around here is constant whining and complaining from people that haven't even touched the cameras let alone learned how to use them.

But then again, just go back to when the R5 was released and look at all the hate spewed about by the trolls. 4 years later and the R5 is still holding it's own against all the newer competition.
History repeats itself.

I'm looking forward to next few weeks after people get their hands on these cameras. Only then will you start hearing about all the positives you mention and then some.
Hurry up and beg/borrow or steal one to test out would ya!

And for those that keep saying Canon is always trying to "catch-up".
Who needs to catch-up now?

The Z 400TC and 600TC lenses are huge in the big telephoto space, and it would make a lot of us Canon shooters happy. It's not like Canon hasn't made a lens with a built in TC before, so hopefully they have something up their sleeve, and with the common denominator here of "hopefully very soon".

I am honestly surprised that Canon hasn't done so with any RF lenses. I will say the ergos and button placements on the Canon bodies are great... especially the R3 which is one of the most comfortable camera bodies I've ever owned.

I hear you, I think the R5II is a great camera but I think if this is Canon's answer to competing with the A1 then it's a catch up camera and will soon be leapfrogged again. For as big as Canon is, it has been playing catch up and you wouldn't expect that from an industry leader (in size). I expect Canon to have a body selection similar to Sony, and lens a selection similar to the recent Nikon releases.

Canon has been leaving two types of shooters out to dry, which is the high res landscapers, and the high res

I don’t think Canon is leaving anyone out to dry, but rather that they are the Toyota of the camera world. They offer cameras that do the job without many issues. The R1 is for pro sports and journalism shooters who need top speed, reliability and high speed access but no redundant resolution which only slows them down. The R5II is for anybody who wants a top-not h camera that can cover everything from wildlife, to landscape to events, etc., etc. I believe this is why Canon will remain the market leader.

Sure, you don’t get the highest resolution, but if you’re a landscape shooter and you’re not satisfied with 45mp, the Fuji GF line is your solution. If you want to crop your bird images from 60mp instead of 45mp, the A1, at a higher price point is your answer. All three top brands offer stellar lenses, but Nikon offers the more compelling selection. Why do we expect each brand to cover every segment in the same way?

With all due respect, if you don't see Canon has been playing catch up, then you are intentionally looking the other way. How old is the A1, and how many more months before the A1II is released? Where is Canon's 61MP body for the landscapers? There are many other examples like lenses, etc, etc., but the flagship and high res high speed bodies are the big issues being discussed here.

Since Canon did not release a flagship yesterday, that means it took 3.5yrs for Canon to respond with the R5II, which some would argue might be comparable or slightly better 3.5yrs later. I can promise you it's not going to take Sony 3.5 more years to answer back (more likely a few months from now) and Canon will be playing catch up again. This has been the pattern and there are more examples, but the flagships and high resolution bodies are the ones being discussed here. You've seen all the discussion about the lenses, but that's a different conversation.

p.2 #8 · Canon departure thoughts

I am more or less out of Canon for similar reasons, though I'm not a bird photographer as a main focus.

Their lens lineup is absolutely scattershot all over the place, and continues to get even more baffling over time.

They introduced a voice coil motor finally in a 35mm f/1.4 lens, the kicker though, is that it has 2 focus groups and still uses a nano USM motor to offset the silence you would otherwise get from the VC motor.

They introduced the 24-105 f/2.8 and the 35/1.4 with aperture rings that:

Are ONLY clickless.
Do not work on most cameras in photo mode save for what they're putting out now.

All of their other lenses lack aperture rings.

The control rings have been rendered absolutely useless because they can't decide to put them in a reasonable area, and some lenses just outright lack them (like the 400/2.8 that I have).

For me, Canon's lack of consistency and thoughtfulness in their lens offerings has made the experience of using them pretty lackluster.

I'm also disappointed to see that they stuck with the same swivel screen design they've had for about 15 years. I greatly prefer the A7RV screen, and the Z8/Z9 dual axis tilt to what Canon is offering (though their screens are still in another league).

Autofocus in the camera can continue to improve for Canon, I never felt it was lacking. For me, it was always better than Sony at everything but small birds. However, at this rate, it would be about another 10 years before Canon actually updated their lens selection to offer what Sony has today. And it will cost significantly more.

I should also mention that switching is a huge decision for me as I make very little money. Many on this board can buy and switch gear as though money is no object, but I am not in that camp. Or on that planet. Or able to see that universe. I cannot afford to take this decision lightly; hence the discussion and desire for input.

Well, in your OP, you sound merely upset with Canon not delivering the camera you hoped for. While saying you can get the results you need with anything. Only now do you indicate that you actually want advice, instead of just telling us you’re fed up with Canon.

First of all, I’d wait to see what bird shooters say about the R5II when they review it. Personally, I thought the R5 was plenty good, and I left Canon for birding because I was tired of schlepping big lenses, not because the R5 wasn’t good enough.

I tried the A1 after I switched to Olympus and I did not regret my decision. Then again, I’ve tried Sony three times and never got on with the system. I think I ditched it forever.

I probably would shoot Nikon if they had announced their long lenses before I switched to Olympus. I think they got their lens options right, but I don’t like the size of the Z8 and wouldn’t use it for anything but birds.

I do think it would have been smart of Canon to make clear early on that their view of a flagship camera isn’t based on resolution, just like I think they would be wise to indicate their plans to offer a high-res camera in the near future, as some people seem to expect.

For all the defenders of Canon, if these bodies were all by themselves they would be highly praised as the best options. But you can't blind yourself to the competition and act like Canon's bodies are the only thing that exist. if you are a landscaper, you'll notice there is a 61MP body from Sony and the 100MP body offering by Fuji. I'm pretty sure Canon is capable, so why not throw a high res sensor in a cheap body to keep customers from moving out.

If you want a flagship, Canon hasn't ever had one and people thought the R1 would be it but that was a big let down. So the closest thing to a flagship now is the R5II which could be on top for a few months before the A1mkII is released.

Attention Lighthound, the TC lenses, just another area where Canon is playing catch up. How about that old 500II, where's the new versions of either the new prime or 200-500 zoom? I love the 500II as much as you do, but at the pace canon is releasing gear it's causing everyone to question Canon's path and they are bailing out, just as you see in this thread.

See my post above, but more generally speaking I don’t see a reason to get upset with a company’s business strategy. It’s going to hurt Canon if they follow the wrong track, but it’s really not going to make a difference to me.

Unlike some years ago, each brand offers you enough choices to cover most needs, unless your needs are enormous prints.

Isn’t Canon the only company with a 500mm f/4 lens for mirrorless?

I don't know if people are getting upset but they are surely getting disappointed, and they are switching brands because they are done waiting on Canon.

I don't think anyone has a 500/4 with a native mirrorless mount. Am I missing something?
You can adapt Nikon's 500 E FL to a Z8/Z9, you can adapt the 500II to the R bodies and to Sony bodies (although performance isn't to notch).

As a long-time bird photographer and professional birding guide, I think the R1 announcement is likely to end my tenure as a Canon shooter (13 years). Reach is premium for bird shooters, and I often do not have enough even with my R5/600/1.4. And sure, the R5 II will be a solid upgrade to my R5, but does anyone honestly

Have you actually used all three brands on which to base an informed decision, or just basing this all on what others claim (which may or may not be biased)?

All I can say to this is that there is feedback that the ancient R5's AF keeps up or exceeds that of the competition. This would suggest to me that the R5II (and R1) are not merely catching up to the competition. Without actually using the options that you might be considering, you might be jumping into other areas of performance deficiencies that aren't immediately clear on paper, or that others may not have experienced because they don't use the equipment the same way you do.

My experience with EF on the R is that the newer lenses that maintain peak fps rates don't appear to have difficulty with maintaining focus tracking at 40fps on my R6II. In my case it's the fairly old 200-400 shooting field and arena sports. Yes, I do think the RF lenses like the 100-300 are faster (the 200-400 was never as fast AF as the EF primes I used before it). You'd have to ask someone here who had v3 EF super teles if the RF versions perform any faster, or are for some reason lacking in speed at peak fps (which I doubt).

The middle ground long lens price point is probably the greatest hurdle with remaining a Canon user in your market segment precisely because of Nikon's offerings. IMO, Sony hasn't really produced anything innovative other than mirrorless versions build ground up in the 400 and 600. No built-in TCs there either.

To summarize - you probably want to trial all three systems to make an informed decision. This will likely require some costs with rentals, etc. But considering the cost of changing systems, might be worthwhile.

I agree, nothing was ever announced other than the misleading announcement for the flagship R1, but I don't think it's unreasonable for people to expect Canon to offer some comparable bodies to their competitors. And like you mentioned earlier, I agree it would be very wise for Canon to communicate if they plan to offer a high res body for the landscapers, very soon. Make a development announcement already to stop the bleeding. If they don't plan on offering one, then Canon is going a different direction and all these people bailing out are making the correct assumptions anyway.
