I was surprised looking up the weights of the R100 and R50, about 13oz, very competitive vs Fuji XE series, even. Lighter than any of the XT series .

The Rf 16, 28, and 50/1.8 are very lightweight. Sigma has 3 primes and a 2.8 mid range coming out, any shortcomings in the Rf lineup potentially made up for by the immense EF & EF-s lineup. 16/2.8 has issues in the corners , might be an excellent aps lens, aps should take care of the 28/2.8 vignetting easily

Anyone tried these yet, R100 or R50, etc + 16, 28, etc? Any thoughts?

WHERE IS THE RF-S 22/2

?

I would buy it RIGHT NOW if it existed... The EFM version was on my M2 and/or M50 99.99999% of the time and I loved it.

The Sigma lenses look nice but they are not small.

I use the RF 28 2.8 and 16 2.8 on my R7. They're great for dinner and casino—make my R7 wee and are good in low light coupled with IBIS. Also a good backup lens while traveling since they weigh almost nothing. I prefer the 16 2.8 and, yeah, most of the massive vignette is cropped out on APS-C. I also owned the EF-M 22 2.0 STM during my M series days and used it for similar purposes as the RF 16 2.8. I feel like it was a better optical design than the RF 16 2.8. Perhaps the design does not transfer to RF-S easily due to the small difference in flange distance?

Two years ago there were "leaked" photos of an RF-S 22mm that looked pretty dang real. Rumor was it would launch with the R50. Would have been a perfect match.

EDIT- for $299 I don't know why anybody complains about the 16/2.8's corners. You guys are joking right? It's a $300 pocketable AF 16/2.8.... Shoot jpg and enjoy.

I felt the 22/2 was good but not outstanding. The 32/1.4 is IMO the lens Canon should be directly porting to RF-S. That one was sharper than my Leica 50 Lux ASPH (but its 'character' didn't quite look as nice).

The 22/2 should still be ported but given some of the optical voodoo the 28/2.8 received.

I never got around to trying the 32 but yeah it did look awesome.
Something that always bugged me about canon's 1.6 crop vs everybody else's 1.5 is that additional bit you get pushing a normal 35 past 50equiv.

Yes, this was my take as well.

The EF-M 32mm was probably better than any EF-S lens, with the possible exception of the 60 macro. It was kind of miraculous that it was ever released given Canon's historical treatment of APS-C as a poor stepchild.

I would love to see it ported to RF-S, but I am not holding my breath.

Yeah, agreed. In particular it messes with third party lenses, which are to this day designed for the 1.5 DX standard.

Since Fujifilm was mentioned, anyone looking to that brand for a very small and light system for certain types of use should take a look at the XE line plus the tiny 27mm f/2.8 pancake lens. The combo is slightly smaller and lighter and less expensive than the recent X100vi.

Downsides include higher prices and that these cameras can be hard to find. Upsides include extensive (old school) manual controls and a great range of very good lenses designed specifically for this APS-C system. Some of them are quite small, too: the 18mm f/2, the so-called “Fujicrons” (f/2 at 23mm, 35mm, and 50mm), and others.

I shoot Canon for my Big Camera Photography, but i travel with a smaller Fujifilm system.

CORRECTION: I mistyped “28mm” when I posted. The lens I mention is 27mm.

If they put the 32/1.4 or 22/2 in Rf mount, might snag some people having a hard time finding X100VI.

The XE4 is one of the lightest, no XE5 yet though, and in the meantime Canon has released some very lightweight aps cameras. In addition to the very lightweight R8 and RP FF cameras

Fuji probably has more light primes, right now, but Canon hasn't really gotten started yet. And has a much broader lens selection overall especially on the telephoto end.

The XE cameras are truly wonderful, but are grossly overvalued at every level for what they are- XE4 are going for more used than they ever cost new (when you can find one), used XE1/2/3 are 2-5x what they cost a year or two ago...
I am on my 3rd and last XE1, I plan to never sell it. First two I bought when it was already an "old" camera, for under 200 each time, and was hard to sell them lol. This last one I bought for almost 300 and the lens mount contacts are defective so it's essentially manual-lens-only, which is fine because the camera is so old and slow that using it with AF lenses is painful!

Fuji lens options are awesome, but they pretty much all start at $300 and rapidly go up from there right? Their only actual CHEAP prime is the 35XC plastic fantastic which I honestly loved on the XE4. I've posted in the Fuji thread that a line of XC fujicrons would be amazing. 3 lenses for ~$500 lol.

That's the direction I think Canon should go with RF-S primes. All plastic, all F2, simple build and small size. They have a lot of patents for small fast RF-S wides with unique focus mechanisms. Small fast primes could turn the R50 into an awesome VLOG/Camming option, which the M50 dominated at the time. A lot of twitch streamers (and other camming industries as well) have shifted to large sensor mirrorless over webcams for the massive boost in image quality. The awesome AI focus built into the R50 would be excellent for this.

Prices have been crazy on the Fujifilm cameras, especially the XE and X100(x) cameras. The issue with th former is that Fujifilm is no longer supplying the XE4, so demand is outstripping supply, to say the least. The XE3 is still a viable option, but it is also priced high on the used market. In fact, as you point out, it costs more to buy a used XE3 than it cost to buy a new one. (My wife bought one back when they were available at list price.)

So, unless you really specifically want the small body, the manual controls on body and lenses, and so forth… it is definitively not the least expensive small camera.

A lot of the small primes with f/2 or f/2.8 apertures sell new in the $400-$500 or so range. They are not cheapie lenses. There are a few cheapie lenses, as you mentioned, that are marketed for consumer-grade cameras. They are reportedly pretty good optically.

You’ll never see three of the excellent “Fujicron” lenses for $500. ;-)

What I'm suggesting is a line of XC 23, 35, and 50mm F2 fujiCrons, all plastic. Heck, redo the 18/2 in plastic lol. The XC35 can often be had used for close to $100... I just checked, a set of 23/35/50 from B&H today is $1300. I feel like it used to be $800, or maybe that was a special promo price. A fully plastic set would or at least could be a lot cheaper.

I could argue the prices either way. They've gone up $1300-1400 isn't expensive on FM, though.

Good to see Fuji doing well selling actual cameras having retro appeal, especially as opposed to all the phones out there

I recently picked up an X100F for travel. I haven't been blown away from the pictures so far. Don't get me wrong it's a nice camera but I am not sure I like the Fuji colors, they seem over processed to me. Trying to find what I like best for settings. The camera itself is very nice but not worth what they sell for. I was looking for a X100V but they are $1200 and up but to me I think they are worth $950 but good luck finding one.

I have the R100 and have used it with the 50 1.8, but I now use it with my RF 600 f/11 & 800 f/11 for moon shots. It's a good little camera and the battery seems to last a while.

Yes, we are all very aware of what you think the V is worth

The F is a clunker with the old, worse lens, not indicative of the more modern replacements.

I hear what you are saying, but that will never happen.

The so-called Fujicrons are really good, professional level lenses at a reasonable price. While folks here are used to some of the old budget Canon plastic lenses (I fondly remember my old 35mm f/2…), those were a different category of lens than these Fujifilm models.

It makes sense for Fujifilm to sell a very small number of inexpensive plastic lenses, as they currently do for real budget buyers of low end cameras. But I don’t think it would make sense for Fujifilm to split their “Fujicron” line-up into pro and plastic models. That’s just not ever going to happen.

I don’t recall that the set of those three lenses was ever listed at $800. The prices have gone up over time, but perhaps you are (mis)remembering some kind of sale or bundle price?

In the meantime, you can find these lenses used at lower prices. Or you can always decide that Fujifilm is just to pricey for your needs.

Recently I bought the R50 as my travel camera, and I really like it. After owning a Rebel XTi, I thought I would never like an APS-C camera, but I was pleasantly surprised. However, if I had larger hands (I am a small person), I think I would find it annoying.

I'm not thrilled with the image quality of the 16mm 2.8, but it is a useful focal length on both my full-frame and APS-C cameras. I prefer the image quality from both my 24mm 1.8 and 35mm 1.8. Because of the difference in both build and image quality from the 16mm lens, I did not go for the 28mm 2.8, but sometimes I would love a lens that tiny.

I will admit that I found the Fujis tempting...

I wouldn't be surprised if the difference in image quality you see is mostly from the f1.8 of the bigger lenses.
Doubtful you would be thrilled with the look from the little 28 but it sure is tiny.
