p.1 #1 · X-T50 First Impressions (My first Fuji)

Ever since Fujifilm unveiled their first mirrorless camera, it sparked a dream within me. The dream was simple yet profound - to one day own a Fujifilm camera. This wasn't just about owning a piece of technology. It was about possessing a tool that combined design and performance in a way that meets my photographic needs. Over the years, they released model after model, each one imbued with its own unique features and capabilities. Yet, each one had its weaknesses, its Achilles heel, that prevented me from making the leap and purchasing one. There was always something missing, some aspect that didn't quite meet my expectations.

But yesterday, that all changed. Yesterday, I finally became the proud owner of my very first Fuji camera. It was everything I had dreamed of, and more. Every feature, every function was just as I had imagined, making the wait all the more worth it. To celebrate this significant milestone, this dream finally realized, I have written a mini review. This isn't just a review; it's a celebration of a journey that started with a dream and ended with a reality. So, without further ado, I invite you to join me in my joy and excitement. Enjoy.

The Fujifilm X-T50, a recent addition to the Fujifilm family, is a compact marvel that expertly combines an array of advanced features, including AI autofocus, in a sleek and compact design. This camera is an undeniable fun companion for enthusiasts and travelers like me who appreciates the value of a lightweight yet feature-rich photography tool.

When you delve into heart of the camera you'll find that the X-T50’s top-of-the-line 40.2 Megapixel sensor, truly sets Fuji apart right now in 2024. However, though excellent, there's room for improvement in the readout speed, as this would further reduce distortion in motion images and enhance the overall image quality. Perhaps we will have to wait for X-T60 to finally have a stacked or partially-stacked sensor in a Fuji body.

The high-resolution sensor is complemented by a 5-axis in-body image stabilization - a feature that is nothing short of a godsend. This system effectively reduces camera shake, allowing most people to capture sharp, clear shots with minimal effort, both in low-light conditions and while moving. Though some may argue that past masters never needed IBIS to create great work, we can appreciate the increased number of keepers a tiny camera like this will allows us.

For everyday photography, the X-T50 is an absolute joy to use. As everyone knows by now, one of its standout features is the film simulation dial, which serves as a great learning aid for those honing their photography skills. This feature allows one to quickly preview the effects of each scene or shooting session beforehand, giving you the freedom to experiment and refine your taste. Those who prefer a different setup without a dedicated dial will find that the X-T50 certainly won’t be catering to them.

The X-T50 also impresses in terms of color reproduction. Its REALA Ace feature, although not quite matching Hasselblad's Natural Color Science, is still a substantial advantage, rendering colors with considerable accuracy and depth. No other camera company offers so many color rendering options with just a flick of a dial. The Fujifilm squad who pulled this off are total geniuses! They should totally be in charge of designing all future Fuji cameras. But then, don’t let this get into your head now, Fuji engineers. No room for complacency either.

Since I don’t personally shoot video, it's worth noting that the tilt screen function is a highly respectful nod to dedicated photographers. Unlike other brands such as Sony and Nikon, which seem to cater more to YouTubers, selfie enthusiasts, hybrid shooters, or users who haven't quite found their niche, Fujifilm has made a clear statement with the X-T50 – they're prioritizing the needs of true photography purists.

Sure, the battery life of the X-T50 could be improved, this isn't a deal-breaker. Budget-friendly battery packs are readily available on Amazon, often coming with a charger. This is a convenient solution to the gap left by Fujifilm's decision not to include an external charger.

In conclusion, the Fujifilm X-T50 is an exceptional choice for anyone seeking a compact yet powerful camera. It's a testament to Fujifilm's innovative spirit, offering a plethora of advanced features while maintaining a small form factor. Whether you're an enthusiast, a professional photographer who just wants a break from your heavier gear, or anyone who simply wants a reliable, high-performing camera that's easy to carry, the X-T50 is a choice you won't regret.

As I continue to use the X-T50, I may have more insights and impressions to share, especially after understanding and appreciating its features and capabilities more fully.

In the meantime, here is the TTArtisan Limited Edition on my Silver X-T50.

Congratulations on your new—nay first—Fuji cam.

I am always a little confounded whenever somebody goes out of their way to claim they didn’t buy something because it lacked “X,” and then never clarify what X happened to be. Moreover, I then wonder how many opportunities they missed from not owning the non-ideal version? Frankly I think it’s ridiculous argument for waiting as nothing in this world is ever “perfect.”

Next whenever someone uses overly flowery praise of some new item and then ends it with, “Give me a like,” it leaves me wondering what their true motives for making the post are?

Not withstanding, the XT-50 appears to be an excellent still photography entry camera and I’m glad you’re elated about it. But the XT30 or XT3/4 were no slouch's for a new user, and a lot of great images were created with them during your lost opportunity time…

PS: what lens/lenses did you get for your initial kit? Care to share any images you’ve made with it?

I asked the AI what's the likelihood of this paragraph being written by AI instead of a human being. Here is what ChatGPT said:

*******************************
the likelihood that this paragraph was written by AI rather than a human being is relatively low. Its mix of personal narrative, technical knowledge, minor errors, and emotional tone suggests it was likely crafted by a human who is passionate about photography and familiar with Fujifilm cameras.

Then I go a step further asking it to rewrite it so it looks more like a work from AI. Here it goes:

*************************

Ever since the debut of Fujifilm's initial mirrorless camera, it ignited a desire within me. The aspiration was straightforward yet profound - to possess a Fujifilm camera someday. This wasn't solely about owning advanced technology; it was about acquiring a tool that seamlessly integrates design and functionality to meet my photographic needs. Over time, Fujifilm has unveiled various models, each with unique features and capabilities. However, each model exhibited weaknesses or limitations that deterred me from making a purchase. There was always a missing element that didn't quite meet my expectations.

However, that all changed recently. I finally acquired my first Fujifilm camera yesterday. It exceeded all my expectations and fulfilled my long-awaited dream. Every feature and function matched my visions, making the wait worthwhile. To commemorate this milestone, I've compiled a mini review. It's not merely a review but a celebration of a journey from dream to reality. Without further delay, I invite you to share in my joy and excitement. Enjoy.

The Fujifilm X-T50, a recent addition to their lineup, is a compact marvel that adeptly combines an array of advanced features, including AI autofocus, in an elegant and compact design. This camera is an undeniable pleasure for enthusiasts and travelers like me who appreciate a lightweight yet feature-rich photographic tool.

Delving deeper into its capabilities, the X-T50 boasts a top-of-the-line 40.2 Megapixel sensor, setting Fujifilm apart in 2024. However, there is room for improvement in readout speed to further minimize distortion in motion images and enhance overall image quality. Perhaps future iterations like the X-T60 will integrate stacked or partially-stacked sensors to address this.

The high-resolution sensor is complemented by a 5-axis in-body image stabilization system, which effectively reduces camera shake. This feature enables users to capture sharp, clear shots effortlessly, even in low-light conditions or while in motion. Although some argue that traditional masters didn't require IBIS to create great work, the increased number of usable shots from such a compact camera is noteworthy.

For everyday photography, the X-T50 is a delight to operate. A standout feature is the film simulation dial, which aids photographers in honing their skills by previewing effects before shooting. However, users preferring a different setup without a dedicated dial may find the X-T50 less suitable.

The X-T50 also excels in color reproduction with its REALA Ace feature, offering accurate and deep colors. The flexibility to choose from numerous color rendering options with a simple dial adjustment sets Fujifilm apart. The engineering team behind this deserves recognition, though continuous improvement remains crucial.

While I do not personally engage in video shooting, the tilt screen functionality is a thoughtful addition for dedicated photographers. Unlike competitors catering to diverse user needs, Fujifilm prioritizes the preferences of photography purists with the X-T50.

Although battery life could be enhanced, readily available budget-friendly battery packs with chargers offer a convenient workaround. This minor inconvenience doesn't overshadow the X-T50's exceptional performance.

In conclusion, the Fujifilm X-T50 stands out as an excellent choice for those seeking a compact yet powerful camera. It showcases Fujifilm's commitment to innovation by offering advanced features in a compact form factor. Whether you're an enthusiast or a professional seeking a lighter alternative, the X-T50 promises reliability and performance.

As I continue to explore the X-T50 further, I may uncover more insights to share about its capabilities and features. Until then, I appreciate your interest in this review.

**************************************************

But I didn't stop here. I copied the above piece to ChatGPT asking it what's the likelihood of this piece being written by an AI instead of a human being. Here it goes:

The expression of personal satisfaction and excitement, combined with detailed technical insights, align more closely with human writing styles where subjective experiences are seamlessly integrated with technical evaluations. Therefore, the likelihood that this piece was written by a human rather than AI is moderate to high.

Man, we cannot trust Machine! it goes a loop into itself

I tried to attach an image to my first post but couldn't. @fredmiranda, do you know why I am getting the "Cloudfare Ray ID" error when I try to attach an image to an existing post?

Thanks for the congrats.

I totally agree with you about not waiting for the perfect camera. My motto is, if one product doesn't meet one's needs, try to find something that does, which is what I did.

For the use of "flowery language," it is to show my excitement for my first Fuji camera.

As for "Give me a like", it's primarily for dopamine hits and also fundamentally hoping to get the acknowledgement that someone has read and shares the excitement that I felt yesterday when I received my first Fuji -- Having said this, I don't recall fredmiranda.com is a place where any member's motive should come into question when they post something, it's not a nice thing to do, I believe. Correct me if I am wrong @fredmiranda

About lost opportunity, that did not happen to me. I am sure all other Fuji cameras were great for the users who could make use of them. As mentioned above, I used other cameras when I did not have the XT-50.

I am thinking of getting the Fuji 23/2 next when there is a good sale or a good listing here. Still debating between the 50-230 and 70-300 though, not sure which one would fit my needs better.

Interesting. I didn't know you could ask AI if something was written by AI, thanks for teaching me something. I am also glad that your AI concluded that was my own writing

Nice review CP, plenty of detail and information. Sounds like you are well satisfied with your purchase which is what counts. As far as the 50-230 or 70-300, I have had both and much preferred the 70-300.

Have fun with the new XT-50. If you purchased it with the new 16-50 kit lens, another telephoto to consider is the 55-200. Its very close optically to the 70-300 but sells for much less and wouldn't leave you with a focal length gap. All the F2 Fujicrons are great lenses at great prices and widely available used.

I hope you enjoy your x-t50 for years to come. I own the X-T5 and X-H2S currently along with cameras from other brands. The 40mp sensor has great croping ability, but like you noticed if using electronic shutter it can have rolling shutter effects on fast moving/panning subjects. But you can always move to mechanical to avoid that.

One other thing to focus on is diffraction sets in by f/8 and you will get a little softer at that point. Will it matter? Maybe not since you have more resolution to start with, but if you were a landscape photographer and want the best possible image quality maybe shoot at 5.6 and focus stack instead of going to f/11 or something.

Hi @jcw1982, thanks for your kind words. Just curious, what made you prefer the 70-300? I am still deciding between the two.

I didn't buy the XT50 kit this time, because I am mostly a prime shooter. Yes I am researching for a good telephoto zoom to pair with TTArtisan 27mm prime, I am wondering why you recommend the 55-200, is it mostly due to the focal range?

Thanks for the suggestion. If there is one thing I wish for to be added to the XT single or double digit lines, is a faster sensor enabling silent shooting without fear of rolling shutter effects. In the meantime, I will be enjoying my XT50 a lot!

Thanks for the advice. I haven't used APSC format before, so I will pay attention to where diffraction creeps in!

I would disagree that the 55-200 is close to the 70-300 optically. The 55-200's sharpness drops off progressively from about 130mm, while the 70-300 is very sharp all the way to 300mm. The latter is a much newer design and it shows. It is slightly larger and slightly slower though. But offsetting that it has the latest OIS.

Thanks for pointing out the newer design, I will pay close attention to this when deciding on whether to get 55-200 or 70-300 to go with my XT50.

For a faster sensor is what the X-H2S was made for. No one makes a stacked 40mp APS-C sensor. Also it's not that is APS-C that diffraction sets in around f/8, 7.1 should be the sharpest on your camera, but that the pixel density on the 40mp sensor is so high it sets in sooner than if you used a 24-26mp APS-C sensor Fuji. I may be remembering wrong, but I think it was said the 40mp APS-C sensor pixel density is around the same as 90mp in full frame.

It's true that the 55-200 looses some sharpness at the long end. But I own both the 55-200 and 70-300 and find them close over the rest of the range. But mainly pointed out the 55-200 because it's very cheap right now and is a lot a lens for $300-ish on the used market. So if money and the 55-70 loss matter, it's worth considering.
I also think it syncs better with the 16-50 or 16-55 where the 16-80 works well with 70-300.
