Unfortunately, it is Leica that will handle the repairs. I am experiencing this now. My camera had a problem with the battery release button losing its spring during its first week of use. I was able to tape the battery in and use the camera just fine. I reported it immediately to the store and they said they would take care of it. Leica said they will just swap out the whole camera. I said great, I will shoot with this one until the new one comes in and then swap them out at the store. leica said no, I must return the bad one, and they will then immediately send out a replacement. So, the store sent it in. Next week it will be a full Month since I sent in the camera to be "immediately" swapped out. As of three days ago Leica is still unable to tell me when my replacement will ship. I am really getting worried that this will drag out for a very long time.

Leica sells me a new camera with a bad part at typical Leica premium prices.

Leica gets my money.

Leica promises to send me a replacement "immediately".

Leica won't swap out at the store so I can use the camera in the mean time. They insist the store send it in first.

The replacement camera doesn't come, but others in the US are receiving new cameras as fresh sales.

Leica keeps my money, but I have no camera.

I honestly feel that Leica needs to get a more customer centric attitude in its business practices. I love the cameras, but think that since we pay premium prices we deserve premium customer care. We will see how long this process ends up taking.

Oof, I said Panasonic as a joke. This is a continuation of Leica not caring about their customers. The reason they are delivering cameras to ‘new’ customers while not immediately replacing yours - as they promised - is that they are a new sale. You are now an existing customer they will eventually get to.
You do have a choice to ask for a refund if you want.
This is extremely disappointing to hear.

Believe me I have thought about getting a refund from my local store. But they are friends and I don't want to hurt them. Also I really do like the camera and want to own one.

I will be going to an event with Leica leadership from both the USA in a few weeks. If I don't have a replacement by then I will express my dissapointment and demand a refund..

If you ask them for a refund and they try to drag their feet, remind them that the California Lemon Law also applies to consumer goods, not just automobiles.
Check the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act aka Lemon Law, sections 1790-1797

Like I said I am friends with the store, it's staff, and it's owner. I am sure if I asked for a refund they would give it. But at this point they are also at the mercy of Leica. In a few weeks I will be at an event with Leica USA President, and staff from Wetzlar. If I have not received the replacement I will make a point of challenging them on this directly.

Yeah, I meant for if Leica USA is dragging their feet on getting this resolved.

Leica should send you a roll of red dots to tape the battery door.

No idea, it just popped out when I opened the battery door to remove the SD Card. It won't happen again because from now on I will use USB-C to both charge and transfer the files into Lightroom. Did that for a couple of weeks after the problem and is now my preferred workflow anyway.

That is one reason that I am so frustrated. I wanted to keep the camera until the "immediate" replacement arrived. They made me return the camera and I am waiting more than a Month now for the replacement. Leica, great cameras, horrible customer care. Not worthy of the term premium brand.

That’s strange because on Leica’s website under Owner Benefits they claim best in class customer service.

Don't you mean accomplishment by Panasonic? Don't get me wrong, I am sure Leica version would have the advantages you guys are describing. However the core LX100 / LX100 II design still came from Panasonic, and Lecia has built on top of that. So it is Panasonic who achieved this feat of fitting all of this in a small body.

Back in the previous versions it was much more Panasonic. However this version is much more Leica. It matters who does the design, not as much who does the manufacturing.

Sony manufacturers the sensor.

Leica designed the lens. But the complex ashperical glass elements are probably done by Panasonic which is famous for producing such glass for many brands. Small zooms of this type are their specialty and they are uniquely tooled to do this at the highest level.

Others manufactured all the other components inside the camera. Almost all different than any previous version had.

The body shell is different than any previous version.

The buttons dials and other controls are completely different than previous versions. They now follow the Leica esthetics as done in Leica's other models.

The menus and workflow are completely different than previous version and completely follow the Leica esthetics. This indicates all new firmware.

What is the big deal with where it is assembled?

Sometime people make simple concepts so twisted. Panasonic designed and released LX100 back in 2014 which started this series of compact m43 cameras with fast zoom. This was 6 years before Leica released the Leica D Lux 7. LX100 II, Leica D Lux 7 and D Lux 8 are all based on the same LX100 design. So giving Lecia credit for this compact design is completely illogical. Anyways, these arguments don't go anywhere - you believe what you believe. I am out of this discussion, have fun.

My dad had a hammer his dad gave him as a child. It was his favorite hammer until the day he died. At various times he had replaced either the head or the handle multiple times during his life. But to him it was still the same hammer.

One thing for sure is that the D-Lux 8 doesn't have the same sensor or pretty much any other component or software as the 2014 Panasonic.

Well ... since the "buzz" is a bit about the maturation / iteration that it has developed into at the current D Lux 8, those changes / improvements that have moved it from a camera that wasn't given much attention to the level of appreciation that it is now receiving, it is those changes that "credit" is being rendered. Original concept certainly is understood as the underpinnings en route to present iteration, too.

Thus, it isn't "completely illogical" to consider where the drivers for the changes came, and having an appreciation for those responsible for improving the user experience from its origins (with lower user appreciation, btw) to its current user experience.

No doubt that Panasonic has its role in this. Nobody is suggesting otherwise. But, it has clearly had the hand of Leica put on it to bring it to its current iteration, from its origins. Joint venture / contract manufacturing ... sure, but it is not "completely illogical" to appreciate the guiding hand of Leica in this, either.

I agree with this. Panasonic designed the core of the camera, and Leica improved upon it with their design and functionality. This approach is similar to what Leica is doing with Sigma lenses in their SL line.. They take the optical design from Sigma and replace the chassis with Leica aesthetics. As a result, Leica fans find the design more familiar, robust, and consistent with their other SL lenses. Ultimately, they are willing to pay more for this, which enhances their enjoyment of their gear and photography.

Leica is also relying on the fact that many of their users might not be fully aware of all these details.

Last week I had an opportunity travelling to Hongkong and personally saw a D-Lux8, I was offered to buy it.
I eyed on a 12 year old M9 with the new non-corrosive sensor replacement at the same dealer and with almost same price of d-Lux 8.
Guess which one I bought? I just hate the d-Lux line so much.
