p.1 #1 · Leica Announces Leica D-Lux 8

Offering top quality in a digital compact camera, the Leica D-Lux 8 delivers versatile portability and a seamless user experience. Drawing inspiration from the Leica Q cameras, the D-Lux 8 features simplified and repositioned controls for improved comfort and operability. The eighth generation in D-Lux cameras, the D-Lux 8 utilizes a 17MP Four Thirds CMOS sensor and has a fixed 10.9-34mm f/1.7-2.8 lens which provides a 24-75mm full-frame equivalency. This is the first D-Lux model to feature DNG file support. Smartphone connectivity is easy with the Leica FOTOS app. Additionally, an on-camera flash is included, allowing you to reliably capture photos in various lighting conditions.

Any thoughts on this? Look like the sensor from the D-Lux 7 was used but maybe other things have been improved. Looks like a nice cary anywhere camera at first glance.

p.1 #4 · Leica Announces Leica D-Lux 8

This looks like it might be fun. I do think there is a bifurcation going on in camera design with one side getting smaller and smaller, as in the Sony A7Cxx series, the new Panasonic full-frame and this camera, while hanging on to as many features and qualities as possible; and the other side getting larger and more powerful, as in the GFX cameras, the Nikon Z8, and the swollenness of Sony's recent flagship bodies. The larger side of things has led to a resurgence of interest in medium format that may shake up the full-frame market.

I wonder what the rendering and image quality of this new Leica is like. If it renders well, I might try this one.

This line has always had a 4/3 sensor. I'd wait for Panasonic's version. The previous D-Lux 7 was a rebranded Panasonic LX100 II, (and the same for the previous version). I'd imagine the Panasonic LX100 III will be out fairly soon. Maybe?

In any case, it's using a 4/3 sensor, but it's somewhat cropped, so the used area is less than 4/3 area. (why it's a 24mm equivalent instead of 21.8mm). Seems like they're reusing the same 20MP sensor they used previously too. Wonder what even the real improvements are over the previous model.

I might try it as well. It depends upon seeing a lot more information first but this looks like a nice camera to just keep with you. As much as I liked my Q2 it was just a little large for that. Jim

What class are they talking about?

Looks like they put in at least 15-20 minutes of thought in updating this camera.

The D-lux 7, aka Lumix LX100ii, was a fine compact EDC type camera. The lens was good. It’s well made. And the sensor was fine too - I’ve been playing around with the Olympus Pen E-P5, who’s sensor dates from around that time, and the images it delivers are excellent. So the older sensor tech doesn’t concern me.
This new D-lux? Does it have an updated processor? Probably has Leica’s color-science built in, and the DNG file thing is nice, I guess. And the lens, as stated above, is a good one. And the EVF? I don’t remember the DL7 viewfinder as being particularly amazing, so hopefully they’ve upgraded that too.

Leica cameras are never a “good value” , they are about fit and finish, accessories, and that feeling you can afford to overpay for a product.
Curious, as others are, to see if there will be a Panasonic version of this. I thought they stated that they were out of the compact camera market now.

The special thing about Leica cameras is they tend to really improve/clean up the user interface and so make them more enjoyable to use. And I like that and can understand paying more for that even if the pic quality has not changed.

This looks like a very nice camera.

Simple. Their charge comes through to your credit card faster than anyone else's.

I didn’t know Leica used the lowly four-thirds sensor. Surely that must upset a lot of serious photographers. /s

Digging deeper into this, it seems to be basically a DLux 7 with aesthetic upgrades to current Leica design language, and that's it. No hardware or software changes? Even the connection to the Fotos app they are touting, the DLux 7 did. Seems like a simple rehousing and re-release.

I think I might bite on this one. Perfect size to keep it in my backpack. It'll be a good compliment if I ever follow through on my desire to switch back to the SL platform.

I got some killer shots from my (departed) Olympus OM EM10 mk whatever, as well as my Pen F.

Having one of the D-Lux 7 models, they are fun to use. If the sensor is the same, I see no reason to update. I have to say I really enjoy the mechanical on/off switch of the prior model, the cleaner back is nice, a tilt screen would be cool.

This lens spec is actually really good!

has a fixed 10.9-34mm f/1.7-2.8 lens which provides a 24-75mm full-frame equivalency.

Yeah, it’s a good lens. It’s the same lens used on its predecessors (D-Lux T109, D-Lux7) (and likewise the Panasonic LX100 and LX100 II)
