I have both the G1 and G2 versions of the Tamron and I just picked up the Sony 70-200mm F4 II macro. The G2 version I have is sharper than the Sony I have at F4 at 180mm/200mm.
I was planning on replacing the Tamron 70-180mm and Sony 70-350mm with the Sony 70-200mm F4 + 1.4 TC to reduce the number of lenses, but I'm not sure I want to give up the F2.8 and additional sharpness of the Tamron. The close up ability of the Sony is nice, though.

Just curious, what you found the differences in sharpness to be if you stopped down to f5.6 or f8 on both lenses? I've had the 70-180mm G1, and it was a good lens, not as robust of a build as I would like, but I think they may have improved on that the G2. I'm considering picking up the Sony 70-200 f4 II lens for a compact travel lens for mostly landscape. I already have the 70-200 f2.8 GM II for times I need f2.8.

I haven't done that comparison as I use the lenses mostly wide open. I've been meaning to do a more detailed comparison between the 3 lenses, but haven't been able to due to the weather and schedule. I don't think there will be much difference once you stop down to landscape apertures. The difference at F4 was pretty noticeable to me, though.
