Now that I've bought my first ever gimbal, I'm surprised to find that the GFX100S with the 500/5.6 with the stock collar/foot cannot be balanced? It is always back heavy.

I'm sure the issue is compounded with the GFX100II or GFX100. Perhaps if one had an exceedingly skinny clamp you could slide the foot far forward enough.

Just seems like a weird oversight that they would have the foot sloped forward and the arca-compatible section end before the point where the system can be balanced. It's almost like they never tested it.

Add a rail to the foot — lots of lenses need a little extra fore or aft room.

Did that, seems a shame they didn't think of how it would balance with their bodies on a gimbal though.

Do you not think that's a valid criticism? Did they think everyone was going to put their 500mm prime on a tripod?

It struck me as odd that the AS compatible section is limited at all. Most other AS foots don't have that limitation.
I like to have the lens and camera balanced even on a tripod.

Yes, I agree it’s a pretty basic oversight.

Tested my GFX100 II and the 500 and mine is back heavy too, will just have to add a a rail as with most long lenses.
It is real nice to arca Swiss compatible but will still need an additional Arca-Swiss Quick Release Plate

Only a matter of time until after-market feet are available. Bit of a failure on Fuji's part to not just make the arca part go the full length. Probably designed by a designer rather than an engineer.

Nice to see how well the 500 performs with some modified spectra. This is 400-500nm and 650nm-750nm. Wide open with about a 50% crop, cracking sharp lens.

I'm not adding a plate to the bottom of what already is an AS plate base. So, I machined the foot to extend the existing dovetail geometry the full length of the part. I used a 1/2" diameter 45 degree dovetail cutter and carefully blended it perfectly to the original surfaces using my Bridgeport Milling Machine. The newly exposed area is raw aluminum but that's OK with me. A little Sharpie will do the trick. Now I can clamp anywhere along the length of the base including right at the balance point that was previously out of range.

Oh heck yeah, that's some good gear gore. Well done.

Is there any point in keeping the protruding, useless part? Maybe keep for when Fuji releases a weightless camera?

Appreciate the creativity and craftsmanship, and thanks for sharing it!

I have just got the lens and teleconverter, and think I will go for a different approach. Since there are threads on the lens with the foot removed, a small plate can be mounted directly on the lens. By milling down the center of the plate just i tiny bit, the setup can be made more stable. Kind of a minimalistic home made custom foot.

You may have meant that ironically (yes, I chuckled) but it isn’t crazy either! I do sometimes hold my large lenses by the foot in the field.

Having said that, in my experience, Fujifilm has some strange — and inconsistent — ideas about how to design tripod feet!

In this case, as with the XF 150-600 identical foot, the foot is easy to remove, and it is well designed and made (except for the limited travel of the dovetail). Really quick to attach or remove, makes for better storage in a bag or case, and it's very stable when attached. My long Canon glass required unscrewing a few screws that could easily get lost and you needed to have the correct hex wrench handy.

I hold long lenses by the foot very often. Just grip tight!

I'm a nature photographer that has been following this thread. I am hoping that some will post images of wildlife that reflects the best use case of this lens and the GFX 100 II or GFX 100S II. As someone that is curious about the GFX system, does the GFX100 II af more accurately/quickly with the 500mm f5.6 than the GFX 100SII?

As I'm shopping the system, I can get a GFX 100SII + GFX 50SII for the price of the GFX 100II. This would leave more money to fill out my optics. I rely on at least two bodies in the field and would rather put money in lenses than cameras.

Anyway... if you've got photos of wildlife in forest habitats, prairies, marine mammals, and even flying birds, I'd love to see what the lens/body combination can do. To be clear, this would not replace my Z9/400TC kit, it would simply provide me with something different.

First, I am not an accomplished nature photographer. My normal kit includes a Sony A1 and A7R5. When out with friends, I have had a chance to shoot some nature with the Nikon Z8 and Canon R5. I recently added the Fuji GFX 100S II to my kit.

When I received my GF 500mm a couple weeks ago, I tested on my MTF50 targets and detailed subjects. I was blown-away with the sharpness & contrast on the 100mp. I don't think any of the $14K+ Sony/Canon/Nikon lenses, on their respective bodies, could have done any better.

Then when evening approached and it was getting dark in the house, I shot my cat, often at over 25 feet, in shadows. Eye focus grabbed his eyes 95+% of time - a big surprise given the low level of light. When I later reviewed the images in Lightroom, 100% of my shots were in perfect focus. Further, the eyes were so sharp, it looked like I had run the images through AI sharpening.

As a further test, I took very small pictures of birds, including a blackbird with black eyes, and shot them with my GFX 100S II, A1 and A7R5 cameras at progressively greater distances, until Eye Focus stopped working (I used 50mm equivalent lenses at f2.8 on all three cameras). To my amazement, all of them stopped reliably working at essentially the same distance! The Fuji actually kept-up! As a note, the Lightroom default sharpening setting of "40" almost seemed like too much.

A day ago, i went to the Tampa Bay to photograph shore birds and try some BIF. Unfortunately, the birds obviously sensed the approaching hurricane and there were almost no birds to shoot other than some distant BIF. Still, the performance of this Fuji combination floored me. Using Zone/Bird focus, no matter the distance, the camera grabbed focus and placed the focus box around the eyes, perhaps, more reliably than my A1(!). Later verification confirmed razor-sharp images.

I actually purchased my GFX 100S II primarily for portrait work. I am now amazed that it has much more utility. When I need 30fps, I'll grab the A1; otherwise, I expect to use the Fuji system one heck of a lot more than I ever expected to and, IMHO, the GF 500 performs way above its $3500 price tag. Another thing - the stabilization is outstanding.

Sorry for the lack of photo's. When doing informal testing, I always delete my test photo's when I have finished.
