p.1 #1 · When the Forest Goes Dark: Eclipse Totality 2024
Congratulations to Ross Martin for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 7 votes - View Previous Winners
I was inside one of my favorite Ohio old growth deciduous forests during totality today. Pictures cannot do justice to how it felt for me, almost like I experienced a new emotion that has no word in the dictionary to describe it. Grateful to have been there!! Hope you all had wonderful experiences as well.
p.1 #8 · When the Forest Goes Dark: Eclipse Totality 2024
Indeed, total solar eclipses are sublime experiences. I don't have enough words to describe what people are missing who experience an annular eclipse and who compare it to those of use who put ourselves in the path of totality and survive the weather (and cloud cover!) dice roll. Truly a cosmic experience, especially if you experience it with the people you love. I was in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ross, and have the same solar flare patterns and placements in my samples as you share here in yours. Bravo!

Thanks Justin! So cool you were at Cuyahoga, a great place in itself. I agree with what you expressed here. I had no idea the feeling during totality would be so amazing and I almost blew it off, so grateful I went. It is still haunting me two days later, I keep yearning to be back in that slice of time...

Love the moment captured here!
I was fortunate enough to experience totality in 2017 at a pull-out on the Cherohala Skyway in western North Carolina. There were lots of clouds on the mountaintop so I decided with an hour until totality to get in my car and drive towards Robbinsville and hope for clearer skies that direction. Was very fortunate that was the case, found a pullout / picnic area and started taking photos of the crescent-shadows on the ground and the waning sun overhead.
There is no other experience like this in the world, and I too am very grateful I was able to witness it.
We had about 80% of the sun covered here for this eclipse, and the changing quality of the light was very familiar to me and brought back all those memories from 6 1/2 years ago!
Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos, Ross!

@lightskyland thank you Matthew for sharing your 2017 experience! I love that you took a risk and drove toward a potential better view with not much time left and were rewarded! It feels good to connect with others who have experienced the profound emotions from a totality event. I hope and pray that I may be blessed to be in Montana in 20 years for one more experience in my own country 😍
