These photos of a female great horned owl were taken at a new to me nest and preserve. Some of the people I met there felt that her eggs have hatched as we saw her with her head inside the tree hollow for quite a long time. I did not observe owlets yet when I arrived her tail was the only thing sticking out of the hole and it was 30 minutes till I saw her ears sticking up. The lighting was very tricky with her face in the shade or mostly in the shade yet part of the dead tree was illuminated by the sun. I exposed for the tree making it as bright as I could without lousing detail and then brought the owl up in post also adjusting the bright sky to look nicer. All images are crops.
Comments and suggestions welcome,
Morris

I'm envious Morris. For me it's been a slow owl season so far. The warm winter seems to have speed things up, I would guess we are a month ahead of normal schedule. I hope you will post more from this great find.

Great shots Morris . Hopefully these urban owls don’t get over whelmed by big crowds like some of ours here do.

Thank you Dave,
They are in suburbia yet the nest is about 20 feet from a well traveled trail. I hear the chicks did well last year.

I'm so glad to find this nest as the lack of snowy owls and the local GHO don't seem to have nested or nested in a well hidden place. I'll go again in two weeks after we return from eclipse watching.
