Official: Sigma 50mm f/1.2 DG DN Art (Sony and Leica mount)
The Sigma 50mm f/1.2 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E-mount and Leica L-mount cameras stands out as the lightest and brightest in its class. Featuring Sigma's dual HLA motors, it offers quiet, high-speed performance, enabling smooth and swift autofocus. This compact design, made possible by the focusing system, contributes to its lightweight build. With its classic focal length and wide f/1.2 aperture, it excels in capturing various subjects effortlessly. Physical function buttons and switches enhance usability and reliability in the field. The lens utilizes a super multilayer coating to minimize ghosting and enhance contrast.

While it's accurate to say that it's the lightest in its class, it's worth noting that it's only 33 grams lighter than the Sony FE 50/1.2 GM.

I'm keeping an eye on images made with this lens. I love my 50mm Summilux-SL, but it's big and heavy.

There's a sample gallery over at DPR - https://www.dpreview.com/sample-galleries/3516193867/sigma-50mm-f1-2-dg-dn-art-sample-gallery/4015715822

From the examples I've seen, many people will likely appreciate the rendering style of the new Sigma lens, which closely resembles the rendering of Sony lenses. The focus transition is exceptionally smooth, and the lens can produce a high level of blur. This results in images with a modern and well-corrected look.

In my opinion, the SL 50/1.4 Lux lens has a bit more character in its rendering. It appears to have higher contrast when wide open, although a direct comparison would be needed to confirm this. Despite being bulky and heavy, it has never let me down.

Looks promising. And not much more than Sony's 50mm f1.4 GM lens. I had and loved the Sony 50mm f1.2 GM lens, but thought I had too much money sitting in one lens so I sold. Might have to give this Sigma a look.

Looking at the price difference I know it can't be anything but a fact those 2 extra VXD motors of my GM are making a huge difference for AF-speed.

Not really my style lens, but the definitely the current lens rendering preference for the masses. I see some minor swirl, but optical vignetting looks pretty good. Some good 3-D at mid-distance to my eyes on photos 9 and 14.

Still waiting for a Sigma 28Ö

Both the new Sigma and the GM1.2 use 2 sets of linear motors on 2 set of focus groups. It looks like both sets of motors have 2 electromagnets, so are roughly analogous in design?

Looks like a nice lens. The images Iíve seen so far look very nice

If I didnít own the Sony version already, I would definitely take a hard look.

I was hoping the magnification on the Sigma would be significantly better than the 50mm F1.2 GM (0.17x) but its actually slightly worse !#? on the Sigma 50/1.2 (0.16x)

I suppose at least its not as bad as the 50/2i and 55za (0.14x)

The 35GM (0.26x) in apsc mode (50mm, 0.39x) much easier to use for some kinds of shots because the magnification is so much better.

Sony has done an amazing job with magnification on their recent zooms, but the situation on bright primes 50mm and longer has not been good.
  1. 16-35GMii (0.32x)
  2. 20-70G (0.39x)
  3. 24-50G (0.3x)
  4. 24-70mm GM II (0.32x)
  5. 70-200 GMii (0.3x)
  6. 70-200Gii (0.5x)

I was just thinking about this. I own the 50GM and it's my favourite lens of all time so I guess I'd have to go with the used 50GM option. But that Sigma lens looks like a fantastic option and such a good price. Comparing new to new the Sigma seems to be the winner unless you need to shoot more than 15fps. Comparing used GM to new is a bit of a toss up. Good times for gear lovers!

I'm not an engineer, but it looks to me you're right.

The focusing groups and motors of the GM are eating more space and the motors of the back group are placed 45 degrees relative to the motors of the front group. The groups of the Sigma are moving in the same direction, whereas the groups of the GM are moving in the opposite direction (at least, that's what the animations are suggesting).

What's more important: Tony noticed a hit rate of 60% when using the Sigma for tracking at walking speed, whereas the GM was close to 100% for the same kind of test. Usually Tony is a pretty lazy reviewer, but I think this time he did some effort, and the difference between 60% and "100%" is large enough to make me stick with my GM. 33g extra? I'm coming from a 40mm Art + adapter on my R5 so..... I rather have 33g more and all the AF speed I can get, as it allows me to use that large aperture to freeze action.

The (Canon) R5 isn't occupied by the 40mm Art as the 50 f/1.2 GM plays that role now, so I can run the 105mm f/1.4 Art on the R5 simultaneously. The 105mm f/1.4 Art is also capable of pretty good AF while freezing action at f/1.4. This is how I shoot sports when f/2.8 doesn't cut it. 135mm is better reach, but f/1.8 in stead of f/1.4, so....
In tighter spaces I change the 105 Art for the 28mm f/1.4 Art, and combined with the f/1.2 GM on the A7VI this is another combo giving both fast AF and a lot of light. Two bodies and 3 primes cover a lot, but the GM is the corner stone of this low light + fast AF kit.

Did anyone notice that the 1.2 DN has a slightly shorter lens hood than the 1.4 DN? The difference is subtle but definitely noticeable. Not sure whether one should read anything into it, though had Sigma been able to keep the same lens hood from the 1.4 they probably would have done so.

For me, when the funds will allow, will be the 50GM. Absolute no question!

I might consider one of these in L mount. Not sure yet. I have the GM in Sony mount and rarly use it as I've moved to smaller f2 lenses for travel. This *might* tempt me to carry something larger.

But it's obvious that Sigma has got some mojo going on right now. Every lens release (and they're coming at an astounding rate) has been fab. I think there's no argument that Sigma is now a first tier lens maker. No wonder Nikon and Canon blocked them, although ultimately the FE and L mounts will gain from lenses like this.

I typically carry my 50mm Summilux-SL, even when traveling. Itís large and heavy, but produces beautiful images. In my case it would be moving to something smaller .

I'm not really in the market for a new body and lens system... but I have dreams of getting the a7cR with a top prime lens that would never be taken off.

I have the Sigma 50 1.4 DN in L mount. Iím pretty happy with it except for AF (probably more the SL2-S than the lens), so would need to see a big improvement to change. I would consider this if I didnít have the 50 1.4 though.
