p.1 #1 · Let's get Shorty!

New shooting experience has been a challenge, has been rewarding and has made me think about my gear/lens choice for this subject and shooting conditions.
Sharing a few from an outing with my good friend John (Johnohio), thanks for the invite More to come later, have a bunch in the bag but trying to find a few that are different.

C&C as you see them, no harm no foul always learning and willing to share!
Karl

Karl,
Great shots! I have the 7rv as well, and it is tough for moving bird shots. I'm thinking of replacing it with (gulp) an a1 for this purpose.
Love the shot of the head-turn - great eyes.

I like #3 a lot. Perfect flight pose. I wish there wasn't sky in the BG.

Wow, you and John had one heck of an outing. Very nice work Karl! My faves are 1, 2, and I'm tossing a coin between the first and second head turn. I like the light underwing coloring included better on the first, but the detail more on the second, heh.

I'm not sure what your exact struggle was, but if it was CAF as Steve suggested, I'd be looking at removing the 1.4x TC and just cropping more, before giving up on the A7RV for shorties because I've noticed with the 200-600mm it does induce just the tiniest bit of lag, which can be enough to miss that perfect eye focus we all want on a fast moving bird. Add to the fact that it seems the shorties come out when the light is low, I'm sure the TC is hurting you even more with the light loss.
I'm not certain an A-1 would cure that with the zoom and TC in that scenario.

If that new Sigma 500mm prime was 600mm, I have a feeling Theye'd have sold out on day 1.

I'd say that you and John had a super outing. Terrific job with all of these Karl, but I really enjoyed #3 and #4 amazing shots. I would be interested in hearing what your thoughts are on the focus acquisition time and tracking using the TC1.4 on the 2-6 zoom lens. Around here F9 can be a problem for shooting at a reasonable high shutter speed without getting crazy with high ISO.

Beautiful shots Karl! No.s 3 & 4 are both really nice.
I'm with Eric on the TC. Shed that and you could split that extra stop between faster shutter speed and lower ISO. But then, I don't shoot Sony, so what do I know? :-)

Karl you and John are killing me with all these great SEO shots, really nice. One of my favorite things to photograph, but this year I have had no luck. I love the 3 & 4 flyby shots, sweet.

I'm glad you posted some. I understand we both were fighting distance and light. Even with the converter I know these are huge crops. Mine were the same, even though I had a little more reach using the converters.
My suggestion , keep your current set up and pull the trigger on a Sony 600 f4 and converters ( stop laughing and pay attention ) . It's only 10-12 grand ( look at me spending your money ) . What did you tell me the other day
" you only go around once ". Well right back at you Buddy.
Seriously I'm glad you went, Let's go back and try it again. With or without your new 600 F4.

By the way. These look PDG

Karl,
These are fantastic. I agree with John, and am happy to spend your money. Just suck it up and get the 600

Nice work Karl. 3&4 for me, too. I don't have the Sony 600 but I did have the Canon I and later II. Although the initial outlay is significant you have to consider the also significant resale value. They're not all that expensive in the long run. Sure, the f4 has advantages but the 200-600 does all that I need at a level I can live with. If you're still on the fence, I agree with John and Gero- go for it.

Nicely done, Karl.
Think John may have edged you a bit, tho.
Looking forward to the shootout.
