Karl,
Great shots! I have the 7rv as well, and it is tough for moving bird shots. I'm thinking of replacing it with (gulp) an a1 for this purpose.
Love the shot of the head-turn - great eyes.
Steve

I had an A1. In these shooting conditions I would prefer it. However the 61mp makes up for some long distant cropping benefits. I think more that a prime lens such as the 600 f/4 would offer the benefits for this subject and shooting conditions.
I really like the A7Rv, I don't regret not having the A1 only but at times for the non blackout viewfinder for better tracking. Not sure it is any better focusing than the A7rV?? Would be nice to have them both
Thanks for comments, appreciated

I like #3 a lot. Perfect flight pose. I wish there wasn't sky in the BG.

Thanks Phil, since it isn't a bright clear blue sky it just shows as a pleasing evening dull glow and transition color to me
Now, if I could pick the perfect BG .........

Wow, you and John had one heck of an outing. Very nice work Karl! My faves are 1, 2, and I'm tossing a coin between the first and second head turn. I like the light underwing coloring included better on the first, but the detail more on the second, heh.

I'm not sure what your exact struggle was, but if it was CAF as Steve suggested, I'd be looking at removing the 1.4x TC and just cropping more, before giving up on the A7RV for shorties because I've noticed with the 200-600mm it does induce just the tiniest bit of lag,

Good points and I agree. The choice thoughts were more about lens not body. At the distance the subject was still relatively small, these are still decent crops. The struggle was AF lock and retention, tons were missed shots on sharpness unfortunately. Not a single shot that I recall was 'eye focus' that I could tell, so really need more reach or closer subjects A 600 f/2.8 with a doubler
Thanks Eric and yes John and I have had a few great outings!

I'd say that you and John had a super outing. Terrific job with all of these Karl, but I really enjoyed #3 and #4 amazing shots. I would be interested in hearing what your thoughts are on the focus acquisition time and tracking using the TC1.4 on the 2-6 zoom lens. Around here F9 can be a problem for shooting at a reasonable high shutter speed without getting crazy with high ISO.

It all has been a new learning curve with this subject and the light we get offered. First time out was miserable light, shot bare 2-6. Next time we were rewarded earlier with the sun still up and even though at a long distance did OK. But as the light went down and ISO's went up the amount of crop needed really began to hurt the image quality ...... extra processing experience was helpful but not a cure by any means.
I have never shot the Sony f/4 .............these are times I wished I had one and with a 2x TC on it! John did well with his R5 and old Canon 500 V1+2x TC and 1.4x TC.

Oh well, it's fun and I will take what I can afford to take

Beautiful shots Karl! No.s 3 & 4 are both really nice.
I'm with Eric on the TC. Shed that and you could split that extra stop between faster shutter speed and lower ISO. But then, I don't shoot Sony, so what do I know? :-)

Greg

I have shot without the TC, I was lucky to have had this chance to borrow it to try it before I bought one, still on the fence about the TC advantage.
Thanks for your picks

I'm glad you posted some. I understand we both were fighting distance and light. Even with the converter I know these are huge crops. Mine were the same, even though I had a little more reach using the converters.
My suggestion , keep your current set up and pull the trigger on a Sony 600 f4 and converters ( stop laughing and pay attention ) . It's only 10-12 grand ( look at me spending your money ) . What did you tell me the other day

What a marvelous set !!! Looks like it must have been so much fun . Do I sense a nice long prime lens in your future 🫣

Funny how new subjects make us rethink our gear and choices. Since moving to Georgia, I am wishing I had not sold my 100-400 for the 70-200.

Hello Vic. I’ve been fine with the 200-600 for most all my shooting. Just seeing the potential in this case with a long prime. Just wish they were in my budget.
I did shoot the Canon 500’s, @$5-6k they were affordable😁
I’ll keep hoping for more close encounters! Thanks for the picks.

Nice work Karl. 3&4 for me, too. I don't have the Sony 600 but I did have the Canon I and later II. Although the initial outlay is significant you have to consider the also significant resale value. They're not all that expensive in the long run. Sure, the f4 has advantages but the 200-600 does all that I need at a level I can live with. If you're still on the fence, I agree with John and Gero- go for it.

Karl,

I'll try the a1 and see how it goes. Don't think the budget officer will let me keep the 7rv and a1 but I'd like the speed/focusing. The 7rv misses too often on fast moving/small objects.

Again, really nice images.
