give it a shot, if I had to critique the lens, far edge corner on 61mp, and by far the most awkward is the reverse zooming. Imagine using the 24-70 EF L version 1, but instead of bucket hood, the hood was on the end instead........... the good is that if you're at 50 all the time, it's compact, but you do 24 a lot, then it's the biggest 24mm you have
the 20-70 is a better optical lens despite the slower aperture, but the 24-50 is plenty fine. the size is very much like the 24GM, and the shape is very much like the 16-55 f2.8 aps-c lens, a small taper, looks wise, it's a real nice lens. The smaller 67mm filter makes it feel quite a bit less bulky compared to the 20-70, but if you're managing the 20-70 ok, that lens is hard to beat....Show more →
I understand what you mean about the old keg hood "hiding" the barrel zooming. Might be a little weird with it zooming backwards...they should use the old design, but I guess then we'd all bitch about the size of the hood
I'm managing the size of the 20-70, but would welcome a smaller form (as far as range, we'll see)
Curious to see what 50mm@ 2.8 looks like compared to 70 @ f4

here's a review that may or may not be me, that has that around the 2:40 mark

Awesome video thank you. I think after watching it, I'm going to pass on the 24-50. Funny it answered exactly my specific question. Been a while Charlie, thanks for the insight.

In that video he mentions iris lock a few times and sounded disappointed that it wasn't included. I've never had a lens with an iris lock and I'm not sure what the use case is.
I'm still very tempted by this lens. My favorite lenses tend to be in the 40-50mm range and occasionally want wider and this seems like a great fit for me. The reviewer wanted it to be stronger on the 24mm side but it works great for me if it's stronger on the 50mm end.
I'm a little hesitant on the price and might wait until they pop up on the used market.

The lens arrived. Looks and feels just as I expected: excellent. A little smaller and a little lighter than the 20-70mm, which I think makes it a better match for the scale of the a7CR.
Only test shots in my office so far, but they look good. I could see that the distortion at the wide end is pretty significant, so I decided to make a Lightroom profile right away. (I have a feeling it may be a while before Adobe makes one).
I'll post some images as soon as I get some sunlight.

I have several lenses with an IRIS Lock. You use it in two cases I believe. The first is to lock the IRIS (or aperture ring setting) in the A for auto mode if that is how you like to use it. The second is to lock it at a specific aperture, say f/2 or f/5.6, so the aperture won’t change by accident when putting your lens into your camera bag and taking it out. This help some to know what aperture to expect on their camera when constantly moving the camer/lens around. Can be a handy feature for some.

Thank you for the profile! That is very nice of you. Your profile works very well. Without it, the lens shows a lot of barrel distortion.
Yes, you really -need- a profile for this lens. Here's an example, with and without the LR profile.

Okay quick shot handheld at 24mm . Looking at the distortion in C1 with Manufactures Profile it looks like it's correcting it out of the gate. That makes me happy but I need to test this for sure. The lens is not in my list of lenses in C1 but maybe the profile of the lens is being used. I do have distortion on in camera but that should be for jpeg only. Anyway looks pretty good

Not showing my EXIF on the forum.WTF
Its at ISO 250 at 1/320 F2.8 at 24mm
Something I just caught but not to throw folks off but I moved my APSC button to the Video button and normally if im in APSC mode and turn camera off than on it goes back to FF. Now maybe with the red Video button it don't do that. Ill try another Custom button
Now I had the A1/A7RV and I never noticed in very bottom of right side of frame when in APSC mode there is like a picture frame look when in APSC mode. I love this on the A7CR. Can someone check this on there A7RV or A1. I don't remember it coming up with a flag like this

Lens is nice and light and fits very well to the A7CVR body. Not to big and the zoom out at 24mm does not bother me at all. Looks to be pretty sharp too but test will confirm that

Nice that C1 respects the built-in profiles. Never understood why Adobe doesn't do that too.

Earlier cameras had the icon for crop mode as well, but I think it was in a different position on the screen.

I do need 2.8 as it’s a work lens too and for events inside with flash it’s a perfect choice. 24 is wide enough and mostly 50 long enough plus with low light 2.8 can actually focus. That’s a big deal and having the Sony 85 1.8 is far better than a 70 f4 so you have 2 lenses and that’s better for me
