The specs look really good to me. I could see this as my daily carry on the A7C2 at 440g and a pretty excellent travel lens, maybe paired with the Sigma 90 f2.8.

Preorder starts tomorrow morning.

Here it's price is set at 1500 USD and it sells end of April/beginning of May.I may buy it as it's significantly more compact than G 20-70/4 and Sigma 28-70/2.8 C,while wider and faster than Sony 28-60/4.5-5.6.

Doesn't seem as versatile as the Tamron 20-40mm f2.8.

I am curious how it will compare to the Sony 24-70 2.8 II

This should replace the 20-70/4. It's slightly smaller/lighter and a stop faster for the same price.

Sony is just making a killer total camera system. APS-C, FF, pro f 1.2 / 1.4 lenses, fast zooms, compact zooms, 120 FPS, compact FF, third-party support, etc.

I have the 24-70 II so don't really need this. If they managed to make it a 1.8 or 2.0 at that size I'd probably buy it just for travel.

It's narrower and shorter though.

I think it's awesome that Sony is producing so many great lenses both for the larger FF bodies, the smaller FF bodies, the APS-C bodies and everyone else.

Seems like a nice lens but I don't see the range being versatile enough to choose it over say 35i or another prime in this range. I'd rather a revised 28-60 with the tiny G treatment that runs 24-50 f4 for something ultra compact that covers 24mm.

That said 24-70s always felt like no man's land to me. I'd probably take this over the 28-70 options out there.

Looks like it's a few mm shorter than the 24gm and still 67mm filter which may make it better balanced on a7c series than the 20-70. But I'd agree the smaller Tamron 20-40 seems more useful and is smaller.

Wonder if it’s worth considering it as a one lens replacement for the FE 24/2.8 G and 40 or 50mm f/2.5 G. Sure it’s bigger but no lens switching and it will do 28, 35 and 40mm as well. Can pair it with Sony’s or Zeiss’ 85/1.8 which is what I might do.

Note, The Sigma 28-70/2.8 is only 30 grams heavier at 470 grams. I got a good deal on that in used mint condition. They also have the lighter 16-28/2.8 DG DN Contemporary to pair with it.

But it's focal range is quite a bit different. You either need 20mm at the wide end or 70mm at the tele end or you don't. I'd be using a lens like this as my only lens so I would much prefer the 20-70 for it's bigger range. I can always boost up ISO if needed.

I guess I don't see the benefit of such a lens. Like, I would assume it will be optically excellent, but in today's age where so many lenses with more useful zoom ranges exist, I don't see much of a draw for such a constrained kinda-wide to normal zoom. If it was f/2, I'd get it a bit more, as it could then replace a couple primes at that end. In almost every case, though, I'd rather have a 20-70, 24-70 or 24-105....or use a 35/1.4 or 35/2. I think I'd be changing lenses nearly as often as if I were using a prime, but without the benefits of the prime.

I would take the 20-70/4 over this lens every single day of the week. Different strokes for different folks, though.

Is it weird I want both the 24-50 2.8 and the 20-70 4 G lenses? Dunno how I'd justify it as one would be more used than the other... but dammit these are both such good offerings for people that don't want to deal with lugging around modern zooms but still want the same level of performance that comes with modern optical formulas.

I know, I know, someone will respond how much their life has changed since they added a depleted uranium frame to their cameras and no longer need to go to the gym, but my god are these lenses a breath of fresh air.

About 3-4 years ago, I answered one of the many threads on this forum asking for your "perfect" lens that no one was making and I answered something similar to the 20-70, something similar to the 24-50, and now the only thing left would be a 28-40 f2. Maybe we'll see that in 2-3 years

I own the 20-70 f4 and it's a neat piece of kit for travel. The 20mm is ideal for walkaround. I hardly ever need much wider. Would I like 16 or 18, sure, but it is rarely needed. 24-50 is a pretty limited range even with the improved aperture. But it would replace the 24, 40, and 50 G primes so if you are a fan of those lenses or were contemplating getting a few or all of them. It would seem like this lens would check most of those boxes given the very similar aperture offerings between them.

A two-three lens kit is where this lens could shine. Pair it with an 85 1.8 (Sony or Batis) for example. And if you needed wider, then carry around a 17 f/4 Sigma. That would be a tidy travel kit for sure.

F2.8, be it in a zoom or a prime is usually not fast enough for low light I typically shoot in. I’d need at least f2 if not 1.8. For me, 20-70 if in good light and pull out a faster prime if in dim light.

That said, I love shooting primes and am looking at the 20-70 when not in photography mode during travels.

I don't really like to shoot wider than 24mm very often so this would suit my needs just fine. Better than the Tamron 20-40 where I'm not going to take advantage of the wider field of view very often but I do like the option to 50mm. I prefer the f2.8 over the f4.

It's very much choosing the lens that suits your shooting style. I understand why people would choose differently among the many excellent options.

Review (original in German). 2 pages:

„ Conclusion
The Sony FE 24-50 mm F2.8 G shines above all with its compact dimensions, but the build quality, including splash water and dust protection, is also good. The autofocus reacts quickly and quietly, and the short focusing distance is also practical. When it comes to image quality, the zoom shows minor optical errors and has a very high resolution in the center of the image. On the other hand, the resolution drops significantly at the edges of the image unless you stop down to F11, so that the zoom can show its strengths more on 24 megapixel sensors and when filming in 4K resolution. The attractive, although not perfect, bokeh is also not to be despised.“

For some reason I really like this lens, but I think for most uses I would rather have my 35GM. The high-res sensors really make primes more appealing to me when a ~2x crop is no problem. I could see this as a nice event lens when paired with an 85/1.4 though.

We certainly have a lot of standard zoom flavors to choose from now though.
