Mike does it look like simple barrel distortion or more complex

Edited - I think the shots I tried at first were funky. It does in fact seem like pretty simple barrel distortion.

PS - Here's a raw file if you'd like to try - https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/tydjndstp1ho6cus3tuc6/DSC01314.ARW?rlkey=idb9570esa25yfopo8ttl7vxf&dl=0

Looking forward to your thoughts and images. And thanks for the custom profile.

The lens arrived. Looks and feels just as I expected: excellent. A little smaller and a little lighter than the 20-70mm, which I think makes it a better match for the scale of the a7CR.

Just test shots in my office so far look good. I could see that the distortion at the wide end is pretty significant, so I decided to make a Lightroom profile right away. (I have a feeling it may be a while before Adobe makes one).

I'll post some images as soon as I get some sunlight.

.

How does the handling feel? I know the lens extends when you go to the wider end. How does that feel? And is the weighting close to the camera or away from it. I like the look of that first shot.

It does feel a little odd for it to extend when going wide, but not a big deal.

The weight is a bit more towards the camera than the 20-70mm, but still front-weighted of course. One-hand holding is improved though.

I use the A7CR’s Sony grip a lot but also got the SmallRig plate for mounting the body on an Arca-Swiss ball head.
Since I also own an A7CII I found another Sony grip for that at a good price here on FM so for each body I have both if I need them. Overkill but now I have all my cases covered. Also bought a Ulanzie F38 small tripod to try with it. It’s a little smaller and lighter than my great Gitzo GK100T Anniversary Tripod, with Markins ball head since the camera is smaller than my full size full frame A1 an A7RV bodies.

I pre-ordered from Pro Cam. Not taking any chances. I know it won't be a hot seller but I need it for 2 Big gigs

So kit is
Sigma 17
Sony 24-50
Sony 85 1.8 get that today

Plus I will rent the A7RV for both gigs and the 70-200 for one of them

Agreed- don't need/want it a lot as I prefer the smaller form-factor, but was surprised how good the body feels & handles with it on there. The few times the 70-200 II has been used with the A7cR I used that grip and it handled great.

A few observations after a short outing with the 24-50mm today.

• As I've come to expect from Sony's G lenses, it is more than adequately sharp across its range, even wide open
• Wide open (ƒ2.8) is it easily as sharp as the 20-70mm wide open (ƒ4)
• The bokeh is a tiny bit smoother than the 20-70mm, and to my surprise, even a bit smoother than the Sigma 35mm ƒ2, when shot at the same FL and aperture
• Fringing seems well controlled.

I'll pull out a couple comparison shots tomorrow.

In the meantime, here's a some samples.

IMO, you will get annoyed by it, very annoyed, too the point of selling it. It takes time for that annoyance to build….

I currently have two, that do the reverse, and that’s because i sold one already, another one is on sale, but since the hood masks the issue, not terribly annoyed, the other one in trying to live with. Have an evaluation loaner on the way, gonna play with it, highly doubt it will translate into a sale for that one reason

Think the background blur looks less contrasty than on the 50mm 2.5 wide open which is nice. But I think I'm more tempted by the zoom range on the 20-70mm..

It's a very personal opinion, my Tamron 20-40mm reversed when zooming and I never gave it a single thought. I do retract the lens between shots and I didn't mind being punched in to 40mm when picking it up and looking through the viewfinder as it's such a great focal length... Maybe with this one the 50mm will be a bit tight as a starting point for composing. Still only minor imo.

This sounds like the confirmation I needed. Ever since switching to the A7CII every standard lens feels clunky for every day carry. The 20-70mm on it feels like how the 24-70mm GMII felt on my A7III.

Here's a couple bokeh comparisons.

• First the 24-50mm compared to the Sigma 35mm ƒ2, both at ƒ2.8. The Sony is slightly less busy.
• Second, the 24-50mm compared to the 20-70mm, both at ƒ4. Here also the 24-50mm is a tiny bit smoother.

For me, the differences are extremely minor.

My decision on this lens replacing the 20-70mm is going to come down to whether one stop and the slight reduction in bulk will outweigh having 20mm at the wide end.
