DPR added a gallery of images from this lens using the A7CR and links to RAWs for downloads. I looked at them and was quite impressed. Several have elements in the corners that can be inspected.
I've been using the 16-35 PZ and a 50mm prime with the 70-200 F4 II, a great lightweight kit. If the 24-50 replaces the prime it will give me more flexibility, though a lot of overlap with the PZ. Maybe the 12-24 instead?

The idea of getting this lens is growing on me. I've found a buyer for my Tamron 20-40mm which I intend to replace with the 20-70mm. My upcoming trip will be too early to get this lens, but maybe for future trips it could be a good combination of range, size and speed.
I found this comparison with the 20-40mm to be very informative.

It shows my annoyance with the Tamron that it struggles to focus and zoom at the same time. Especially annoying for video work or close range sports.
Let's see how much I'm going to like the 20-70mm first though

losing the 20mm is a bit understated in that video, I think it'll hurt the most

Yes..and he says the Tamron focus ring has "a bit more friction" like it's a bad thing rather than something positive. I really like my 20/1,8 G but not its focus ring, being too light and sensitive (to me). I don't know whether all newer Sony lenses are the same in this regard.
AF/MF switch and the aperture ring are useful things, though the term "build quality" appears more a test of time, what the reviewer in question is referring to is the feel of the lens in the hand.
It is introduced at a price approx 200USD beneath the 20-70/4 herearound (it isn't cheap but the 20-70/4 was introduced at a pretty steep point and remains in that vicinity).

I remember when the Tamron 20-40mm came out lots of reviewers and potential buyers were questioning its range, saying it's not wide enough compared to wide angle alternatives and doesn't have enough range compared to standard zoom alternatives. After the dust settled it ended up in many more photography bags than I expected. This lens might do the same.
It really should have been a 20-50mm from Sony but they probably feared it would cannibalize the 20-70mm sales since that lens sits at the same price point.

This could have been an interesting comparison if he used the same apertures on all lenses, but he didn't. Of course they will look different at different apertures! Seems to me it was a missed opportunity.

This lens is a little smaller, a little lighter, a little faster, a little wider FL and a little wider aperture than my 20-70G. Feels like just... not ...quite...enough...to make me want it, or do I?
I lust after the 2.8 a bit.
But, I took my a7cR/20-70 on my last trip with a standard prime and LOVED having the 20mm end, I also used 70mm quite a bit. Punching into 105mm with crop mode. It felt like the perfect FL for street -and- landscape. Still the 2.8 is tempting and 50mm can punch up to 75mm in crop mode.
I feel like I might have to buy it to try it.

I thought the FE 24-50/2.8 G was not supposed to ship until mid May. How are you getting a copy?
Evaluation loaner from Sony Pro Services. I requested it some time ago, and was quite surprised when the shipping notice came so early. (but I'm not complaining.)

20-50 f2.8....
would have cannibalized not only the 20-70, but the 24-70gm ii as well, would probably be as big as a GM unfortunately

The lens arrived. Looks and feels just as I expected: excellent. A little smaller and a little lighter than the 20-70mm, which I think makes it a better match for the scale of the a7CR.
Only test shots in my office so far, but they look good. I could see that the distortion at the wide end is pretty significant, so I decided to make a Lightroom profile right away. (I have a feeling it may be a while before Adobe makes one).
I'll post some images as soon as I get some sunlight.
