No use for me. 24-70 or 24-105mm for me. The transition from normal/WA to tele is what makes the classic mid range zooms so useful (and taking about 80% of my shots). I would always be changing lenses to get the 70-100mm tele, so no advantage.

So back to focal lengths. I rarely go to 70 with like a 24-70 anyway and than usually jump to 85/135when I’m doing events. So having a 24-50 2.8 is actually a nice option for doing event work. I still need wider like even a 16 but most event type stuff falls into this focal length anyway.

Same. I need a wide start. That's why I love my Tampon 17-28 f2.8. I just crop at 28mm if needed. And it's internally zooming ..

I'm not sure if I like that Sony made this lens...I might have to put my money where my mouth is

I liked Minolta's tiny 24-50/4 back in the film days, and have always said I'd be interested in a modern re-do. Well, I guess we got it. If I think about my usage, I'm probably pretty happy with the focal range and I like f/2.8. I'm generally a prime shooter, and I typically prefer something faster beyond 50mm, so I could see myself being happy with this lens and an 85.

Sony, Sigma and Tamron have made enough lenses in this sort of general range that everyone can find something they like...small 16-35/4, fast 17-28, fast (and pricey) 16-35, versatile 20-70, fast (and small) 20-40, fast 24-70, fast 28-70/75, versatile 24-105...etc.

For a non-zoom person like me, a bit overwhelming...I'd love to shoot side-by-side with the 16-35PZ, 20-40/2.8, 24-50/2.8 and 20-70/4. It would be interesting to see which one I reached for most over the course of a week or two.

That is why I’m currently using the Sigma 16-28/2.8 DG DN Contemporary and the Sigma 28-70/2.8 DG DN on my compact C bodies when not using a prime. Their 16-28/2.8 is internal focus and does not change size. They weight 450 and 470 grams respectively and take only a 67mm filter on the 28-70mm and a 72mm filter on the 16-28mm. I got them both used at a great price. Basically both for just a little more than the new Sony 24-50/2.8 G.

How do you feel about the performance of the two Sigma's? I've always been curious how they do vs. the Tamron equivalents.

Dave,

Sorry I never compared the Sigmas to the Tamron’s. I found the Sigmas used and at a good price so I bought based on the reviews I read. Also that they were smaller and the wide one went to 16mm instead of 17mm. I didn’t need the reach to 75mm.

Thanks for responding. Overall, pretty pleased with the performance? Any glaring weaknesses? Mostly thinking of the 16-28...I'm not very good at composing wider than 24mm, but have been thinking I'd like to expand my view of the world, literally.

I wouldn't mind an inexpensive entry into the ultrawide world, and I generally prefer Sigma build and haptics to Tamron.

If the IQ is on par with the 24-70 2.8 II I will likely get one. It is smaller and lighter and will be great for traveling. Can bring the 70-200 2.8II and just miss 50 to 70mm range.. No big deal

If this offers prime-like IQ throughout the range I would probably grab one when on sale. It isn't priced particularly well locally versus street pricing on the 24-70 GM II, which is currently only around ~20% more expensive locally.

I call these small Sony G lenses my m43 killers.

I love everything about this lens, except the fact that the lens extension happens at the wide end instead of the tele end.

But overall, this lens is small enough to feel like the Olympus 12-40mm. Too bad it doesn't have a distance scale, but it's not something in Sony's DNA.

Love 'em or hate 'em, Sony is one of the few brands who seem to care about making stuff for those of us who care about size and weight. I know I am in the extreme minority, but I'd rather see Sony make compact stuff like this, rather than a 28-70 f/2 or a 24-135 f/2.8.

vs the Tamron 20-40, the quality of life improvements are enough for me to pick the Sony. Aperture ring; better AF, especially tracking subjects moving towards the camera; better compatibility with active IS.

I'm putting aside money to eventually pick up an a7Cr. I'll use it with the 20G, 24G, 40G and 85 f/1.8 lenses. I'll pick up this 24-50G zoom sometime after the camera. The zoom plus the 85 f/1.8 will make a great walk around package. I'll still likely use the primes most. The zoom covers my most used focal lengths and will be good for environments where I'd prefer to avoid lens changes.

If you have an interest I might consider it instead of the 24G or 40G unless you already own those. I’m considering to get mine to replace the 24G, 40G, and 50G which I already own.

I do have the 24G and 40G currently. This is part of why I'm not in a rush to pre-order. The 40G is my most used lens. I really enjoy using it. I could see using the 24-50G for flexibility when the weather is sketchy or to simplify while on vacation with the family.

In my opinion event shooting with constantly moving subjects is not a place to use a camera with stabilization at 1/5 of a second. Let’s be real, one slower lens does not replace one faster lens even if it’s cheaper or can cover a wider range of field of view. There are so many different lenses because there are so many different shooting situations. Each of us has has different needs and this new lens will fill the needs of size/weight. , field of view, and cost for some but not for all. If you like it share why, if

Of course not exclusively at 1/5 stabilized. And it depends on the kind of event. A funeral like the one discussed might well have many still moments. Or take a look at some of Jeff Ascough's natural light photographs of weddings.

I don't think this will ever be a 1:1 replacement to something as light as the cupcake lenses as there's something truly freeing to just having ~170g on the business end of your setup. While I think there would be a lot of overlap in the use cases for these lenses, I think the thing most in danger of seeing a reduction to its use time would be my 35 GM.

The zoom is lighter than the GM prime, and while I'd certainly need the GM for basically the whole winter (my 2.5 G prime was hitting easy ISO ~6400-10000 at typical shooting settings) I've never found 2.8 to be a huge limitation in terms of separation even if 2 or 1.4 is obviously nicer. I think the majority of the outdoor shooting I do with the GM would be replaced by the 24-50 G, while indoor use might see more prioritization of the GM due to both more pronounced separation at closer distances and lower availability of light in general.

As for 'I have no idea if I'm going to take pictures today' scenarios... I don't think there's going to be a better lens than the 40 G for those anytime soon.

This one is a bit of a head-scratcher. This range is well covered by 1st and 3rd party lenses. But I think it helps to think of this lens as a fine-tunable prime, similar to the Pentax DA 20-40mm 2.8-4.

I took my nephews to Rockefeller Center a few years ago, I brought the original a7c and 2 primes, Sony's cupcake G 24 and 50. I wanted to switch lenses depending on the situation, but it was raining lightly, so I just left the 24 on the camera the whole time. So something like this G 24-50mm would have been perfect. Having a 2.8 aperture would have been good enough for interiors, 24 is as wide as I'd want to go to photograph people, 50 is adequate for portraits, and the lens is still relatively small and light.

This lens would have been perfect for that situation. EDIT: Still a little too pricey IMO.

I love this new lens. It can replace all my small but slower primes, and 20-70 zoom as well. I'm not saying it's better than 20-70/4 or the other way around. I'm just glad Sony offers more compact and light weight options to choose from.

This lens is of no interest to me at all unless the IQ at f5.6-8 is way better than the 24-70 GM II and the 24-105 and it has great sunstars starting at f8. I can get by with a 16-35mm GM II and a Loxia 50 or CV 50mm APO

I'd rather they made it f4 and half the size/weight. As of now I'd rather have a 24mm f1.4 GM (which is the same size as this new zoom) and crop in to 50mm f2.8.

As you can crop from 50mm to 100mm.
This lens gives 24-35-50mm f.2.8 small primes without need of lens change. For smaller there is the 28-60.
