I would love to hear from anyone who actually has the RF Nokton 50 1.0. The Christopher Frost review is the only one I have really seen for the RF version. It sounds rather promising.

I have messed around with adapted AIS and FD lenses (which I own from my days collecting vintage gear) on my R bodies. I also once owned a Leica M8 and had to deal with M lenses having no electronic contacts. I just can't warm up to the compromises inherent in using non-chipped lenses.

Since the new Nokton lenses for RF have actual lens/body communication to transmit Exif data and focus information, that might be kind of a game changer. Manual focus at ridiculous apertures is much easier on a modern mirrorless camera than it ever was on an SLR or even rangefinders, which can infamously get out of adjustment.

Have you used any chipped or manual focus EF mount lenses with full electronic communication on Canon R? It allows use of the 'focus assist' feature whereby you line up a couple arrows kind of like old match needle metering, but it's at the focus square in the image area. It's probably the fastest manual focusing aid I've used thus far on a mirrorless camera.

If you're interested in a more full-blown lens review with plenty of sample images to get a feel for the lens's character, Fred did one with the M mount version and it's posted on the Leica/Alt board. Relative to other M mount options, it does extremely well. It's possibly the best ultra-fast 50mm rangefinder lens available today. Fred also did a comparison against the Sony FE 50/1.2 and the Voigtlander didn't fare as well, in respect to technical performance. The Sony FE is probably a good approximation for Canon's RF 50/1.2 to get a rough idea how it would compare.

IIRC @burningheart has one on order?

Gordon Laing reviewed R version also:

I have some old chipped adapters somewhere for manual lenses. However I read in dpreview posts that old chips might not work. There is an ebay seller from Ukraine claiming that his newer dandelian chips work with the new mirrorless cameras:

Had no idea these existed, thank you. Very interesting.

and it arrived yesterday.

It is sharp. I did a quick test at the store and used the triangle focusing for a face shot of my sales rep. As soon as the triangles lined up I snapped picture. His entire face was crisp and sharp.

Today I did a quick informal test of my Trinity of F1 or faster lenses(Voigtlander 1.0, Canon EF 1.0, Canon Dream lens 0.95. The Voigtlander blew them all away in terms of sharpness wide open. Both the EF 1.0 and the Dream 0.95 had the halo(glow effect) where as the Voigtlander was crisp and more saturated colors. Though all 3 when stopping down gets more saturated coolers as the contrast improves.

Looking forward to the announcement of availability of the 40/1.2 even though I have the Voigtlander/2.0 in an EF mount. It will be interesting to see what the differences will be between the 2.

In Cosina's video announcing the 40 1.2, they mention + show lens correction data available via a firmware update. I wonder if this lens data update will also be coming for the 50 1.0 Nokton RF?

My biggest gripe is the 50 1.0 lens definitely needs heavy vignette correcting in LR when shot wider than F/2.8. I imagine lens data correcting firmware would help.

That's great news! How does it compare against the RF 50/1.2? Also, is there anything specific you prefer with the Voigtlander 50/1.0 over the RF? Of course, this assumes you have the RF 50/1.2.

The f1.2 lenses are today's f1.4 lenses of yesteryear. They make up a more technologically established pro-oriented class (massive bokeh as a 'look') that appears quite different from the 'edge lords' at the bleeding edge of optical performance in the format - the f1 class. What a difference a half stop makes at this ragged edge of lens craft.

Not many pros will use the CV f1, it's a character lens pure and simple. Best compared with others in its own class, just as no one expects any f1.4 to compare with Leica's f2 APOs. Well, maybe they do but they should not.

Yesterday did a quick unscientific walk about comparing both handheld at F1.2. Took shots of street signs and Christmas displays(daytime). No brick walls.

Making the assumption the RF 50 is a true 50mm focal length the Voigt is between 45mm-49mm.

To my eyes the Voigt is sharper in the centre at normal shooting distances. Shooting closeup under 2 feet the RF is sharper and showed a little more of the detail in the background. Yet when I took the picture of my sales rep at the store about 3 feet apart at F1.0 his eyes and face were sharp.

At the edges of the frame(15%) I find the RF sharper.

The Voigt has a lot of Vignette. At F1.2 I needed to add about 3.5 in Capture One Vignette to correct for it.

One thing I do not like is the Aperture ring. It is opposite to Canon FD lenses that I am used to using. Opposite direction. At least the focusing direction is the same. One other thing of note with my Voigtlander EF lenses the aperture is controlled by camera. Yet the RF version one needs to use the aperture ring.

As an aside the Voigt 50 destroys the EF 1.0 in terms of sharpness at 1.0.

Besides shooting the Voigt at F1.0 it will take time for when I would use the Voigt over the RF. I like the slightly more saturation of colours. I am happy to have the lens it will be used most often combined with my Voigt EF lens kit out(20,28,40,90 and 125)

I look forward to the 40/1.2.

Did you notice a mid-zone drop in sharpness/resolution with the 50/1.0? Also, any edge colour shift? In respect to edge colour shift, it may be camera dependent, with apparently the R5 performing best. If you have an R6 or R6II, I'd appreciate a quick infinity test to determine if colour shift is present.

Wow, you have the EF version of the 125.

I agree about the wrong direction of the aperture ring, relative to Canon FD and Leica M. However, apparently that is now the correct Canon direction because the new 24-105Z's aperture turns this way, too... So apparently it wasn't a mistake on Cosina's part.

Regretfully the only Canon bodies I have are the R5, R5 modified for full spectrum and Ra.

Years ago I bought the last 125 from Cameraquest long before they could no longer sell to Canadians. Didn't notice the reversal on the 24-105Z.

On Saturday I only shot the Voigt at F1.2 and F8 for my daytime comparisons with the RF 50. The outer zone of the Voigt at F1.2 the last 15% had a drop in sharpness. I did take a few shots on New Years Eve when out shooting Christmas Light displays and I noticed it was sharp edge to edge at F2. Mind you it was a higher ISOs so the edge to edge sharpness may be better during the day at F1.8 which was close.

Initially I wasn't interested in the 24-105Z as the 28-70 is my go to but I am thinking of doing some video this year when hiking and the the 24-105Z would be a one lens solution if I am not going retro look with my FD lenses.
