Yes but I am going to return it back
There is a good chance that the lens is perfectly fine, including the front element. Whether removing the front element would change anything with regard to this being clearly identified as transport damage is another matter.
I would first check if the lens is O.K. But that's just me, I don't buy anything at Amazon, so I have no experience with regard to their return policies. I know that people (employees) at Ebay will promise you everything when you call in with a problem, and will most likely do exactly nothing to solve the problem. Amazon might be different, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Judging by a stock photo of the front element area I would guess the front element is spared but it's close. Here's a quick comparison - about half of the lens cap is pushed inward at the deepest part. At that deepest part there's a beveled edge around the outer edge of the front element that may be keeping the cap from making contact with the glass.

Without contact, there very likely is no damage to the front element. But even with contact, damage is unlikely if the lens cap was pushed in while the lens was in the original packaging. I assume the lens was shipped in the original packaging, otherwise of course a lot of things might have happened inside and outside of whatever packaging it was shipped in.

I had this *exact* damage occur to my 80-400 AFS when returning from a Nikon repair. One side of the cap was jammed in. Neither Nikon or UPS would assume responsibility. I think UPS damaged the package in transit but I could not prove it. Eventually the front of the lens separated and I had to pay for an expensive repair.
TAKEAWAY: Never open a package without videoing the opening.

But at least I would have had proof that I did not do it.
Makes sense.
Recently I got a replacement iPhone 13 Pro by Fedex since my phone's Face ID sensor stopped working.
I was instructed to use the same box to ship my faulty iPhone back to an Apple repair facility in Indiana.
I did as instructed, and Fedex tracking showed it was delivered and signed for etc.
A few days later, I got an email from Apple saying the box I sent was empty!!!
It took almost a month to get this resolved with Apple support.
They checked the shipping weight when I shipped (1 lb) vs when it was last scanned at the Indiana Fedex facility (much less).
Apple finally closed the case without charging me anything, but it was annoying.
Checking the Apple community forums, it seems a lot of people have had the same experience.

Glad that Apple got to the bottom of that for you. Of course that was very annoying. My experiences are that Apple has outstanding customer service. I use Apple Care at least once a week; I am not tech-savvy... ha-ha
