I had this *exact* damage occur to my 80-400 AFS when returning from a Nikon repair. One side of the cap was jammed in. Neither Nikon or UPS would assume responsibility. I think UPS damaged the package in transit but I could not prove it. Eventually the front of the lens separated and I had to pay for an expensive repair.
TAKEAWAY: Never open a package without videoing the opening. I learned that the hard way.
