Just announced: New: Canon RF 10-20mm f/4 L IS STM Lens - $2299

Available Nov. 2

Will be interesting to see how much its small size is due to software-based distortion correction.

Interesting that an L lens was given an STM focusing system…

I suspect it being an UWA, the amount of movement of the focusing elements to track moving subjects is relatively small compared to other lenses that benefit more from faster options.

https://www.dpreview.com/news/2943706942/canon-rf-10-20mm-f4-ultra-wide-lens-for-full-frame-mirrorless
https://www.usa.canon.com/shop/p/rf10-20mm-f4-l-is-stm

What is today's more exiting announcement - this RF lens or the Nikon 600/6.3 PF lens for $4800?

Given this RF is 10-20, could there be a 20-xx/4 zoom coming?? I'd be interested if it didn't rely a significant amount on software distortion correction.

And STM motors are virtually silent for video uses, as noted in the article.

Wow!! That's insane.

Half the weight and better iq vs 11-24, apparently.

After seeing the distortion on other mfg uwa, I don't really see the point in complaining about canon, just have to see

What is the general consensus about the EF 11-24's image quality? I have only used one a few times and thought it was pretty good. But yeah it was large and heavy. This lens might really affect the 11-24's resale value as more transition to RF. If Canon's marketing-speak is true, it's good to see them taking advantage of the shorter flange distance. Hopefully vignetting isn't crazy strong.

I'm in the market for a 11-24mmL and hope its price will go down. This new lens seems almost too lightweight but let's see how it will perform. IS seems unnecessary, STM a bit strange and the tiny size more so.

For ultra wide like this I doubt anyone could ever tell the difference between USM and STM.
My guess is that they used STM because it is smaller.
I expect that there is no technical disadvantage to using STM in this lens.

Clearly the nano USM is not that expensive if EF-s 18-135mm and RF 100-400mm can have it. Those are pretty cheap consumer zooms.

This lens sounds great and is a feat of optical engineering.

I think the main reason why they won't sell in crazy numbers is because 14mm and 15mm are already soooo wide.

But I think it was a great call to make it small. At this size I might keep it in the bag just in case I would need a crazy wide shot.

Despite all the comments "costs a kidney" all over the web, I think camera equipment is pretty cheap (relatively).
R5 + 10-20mm + 2.8 trinity + 100-500 = sub $20k
$20k is a difference between standard car (e.g. Honda) and a premium car (e.g. BMW). In wealthier countries there is a ton of premium cars.
The kit above is insane, continuous range from 10mm to 500mm (with f/2.8 for most of the important part).

Much of those cars are leased. 20k for a photography kit is too much for 99% of the photographers, but living in Switzerland helps.
11-24mm (and this 10-20mm) is a very specialized lens, there is no need for one for the casual shooter.

Absolutely, the kit I described is pretty much the best money can get. A world class pro will not have anything much better.
$20k is the top people will spend with Canon (aside from superteles).

There are many much more expensive hobbies.

I use a Sigma 12-24mm II on full frame: $400, a Sigma 8-16mm II on APS-c: $275. I just sold my Rokinon 12mm FE for the Rokinon 8mm FE: $250. The 8mm is APS-c only, but it is better glass. Wide does not need to be stupid expensive.

Sure, used, you can find cheaper alternatives. New, the Sigma EF 12-24/4 is $1200 and 1” larger in diameter and length (before EF-RF adapter) and double the weight. Clearly Canon has prioritized small size and light weight while claiming better optical performance than the 11-24 and ‘stretched’ to 10mm. If your priorities don’t align with Canon’s, then by all means, you can save money. Canon will price according to other major system brands - Nikon and Sony. And Canon pricing on release almost always seems to incorporate an early adopter premium. Let's see in a year or so if this lens starts appearing in instant rebates like many other RF lenses currently do.

None of that third party stuff is going to be as good as the Canon, all around - not even to mention the size and weight advantage the native RF lens is going to bring.

Cheap lenses have been around forever, with all of the usual caveats. If you're on a budget, they're better than nothing. But Canon is not competing in that market here.

I’m not overly familiar with the options for Nikon, Sony and Panasonic FF mirrorless. Do any of those offer something better? Ignoring price, f/4 would seem to be a logical compromise to keep size and weight reasonable without drifting to an even slower maximum aperture.

I love this aspect of the RF 70-200/4 and this 10-20 looks to share that design philosophy. But for me, it would be a special purpose lens. As I wrote earlier, I’d love a compact 20-xx/4 to pair with the 70-200…

None of them have any competitors to this lens. The closest available is the Venus Laowa 10-18, which is manual focus, and F4.5-5.6. It's $850.

I'm not sure why people are piling on about this lens. It seems like a very unique lens for a small niche of shooters. L lenses have never been the cheapest around so I'm not sure why people are surprised at the price here. Heck, Canon even dropped the price by $1000 over the EF version and people still complaining. Hilarious.

Granted, none of the 3rd party stuff is a good as Canon. I use 3rd party 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 BECAUSE they are less expensive, and the IQ works for me. I use some 3rd party stuff because Canon doesn't make an equivalent. In the UW-angle range, where I'm shooting f/8-16 for as much DOF as I can get, I'm not convinced Canon is enough-better (at those apertures) to justify the 10X price premium. Then again, I am cheap. I do prefer Canon to other brands of bodies, and dSLR to mirrorless. I'm never going to pay $2000+ for a lens, though.

No one offers an autofocus 10mm zoom outside of this. It just doesn't exist. Nikon's widest is the Z 14-24mm f/2.8, which is an absolutely phenomenal lens (probably the best UWA I've ever used), but of course only goes to 14mm, and it's $2300. Sony has the 12-24mm f/4, which is good but not great, at around $1750, and the outstanding 12-24mm f/2.8 GM at $2900. The Canon is a bit smaller and lighter than both Nikon and Sony f/2.8 zooms, and about the same size as the 12-24/4 Sony (and Canon and Nikon's 14mm f/4 zooms). Pick between the width and the aperture for your preference there.

My thought is: this lens looks amazing, and is surprisingly compact and very reasonably priced for what it gets you, especially if the optics are outstanding.

The IS is a special kind designed for vloggers who hold the camera out in front of them when walking; it defeats a wobble effect at the edges. (Gordon Laing covered this in his video.) The STM, the size, and the button on the barrel also seem to be aimed at these users.

Never mind that a GoPro seems to handle this task just fine.
