p.3 #1 · New to Leica: Questions Regarding 28mm and 40mm
All that is moot now. I have a black M6 and a Voigtlander 40mm f/1.4 on its way to me. If the camera is in good working shape, I'll be grabbing a Voigtlander 28mm f/2 Ultron Aspherical Type II. Then I'm heading on vacation!
I'd like to thank Gerry, Rusty, and Huss. My wallet hates you though...
Gotta clean up my shelf and put some cameras up for sale. My Rollei is going to have a German roommate.

If you are committed to 28mm and 40mm you might bypass Leica altogether and get a Voigtlander Bessa R4M. It was designed for wide lens shooters and has framelines for 21, 25, 28, 35 and 50mm.

If it makes a difference in price, the original Voigtlander 28/1.9 is good, I've had one since they came out nearly 20 yeas ago, the f/2 vers II will probably be better, but not the version 1 perhaps which seemed a retrograde step at the time,

So much M5 hate in this thread — IMHO, and I know others share this opinion, it's the best film M. The needle light meter is not only spot on, but a far better user-experience than the arrows and dot display of the M6 and M-P, that don't give any info about how far off you are.
The M5 also displays your current shutter speed IN the viewfinder, amazing. And on shutter speed, the shutter speed dial hangs over the edge of the camera; so much easier to use with your eye to the viewfinder than any other M, including the digitals.
Lastly, it's the last model made entirely by hand in Wetzlar using the traditional "adjust and fit" method. My 50 year old M5 feels much more solid than my M10.
Is it ugly? I don't think so. Brutalism is back in. My M5 (below) is beautiful to me
